Hello,

I am very new to flying or flying machines. My only experience in flying is a micro quad (cheerson cx-10) which I bought from USA. I have some level of knowledge on RC equipment and connections. I have built RC cars from kits.

I would like to build a quad copter, a '450' one. Honestly, I don't know why is it called '450' (the length of arm?). I choose this '450' due to the amount of help available in internet and the cost involved.

My goal is,
  • A quad which I can fly smoothly for 10 to 15 minutes. I don't plan to put any camera on it.
  • Not spend huge amount of money.
  • Use my existing basic 4 channel FlySky FS-i4x Tx and Rx.
  • Use KK2.15 as the flight controller (this seems to be much simple to setup)

I have outlined two configurations below. If some of you can help me choose the best from it or suggest something better than that in the price range, that would be great help.

Option1
Quadcopter Frame F450
Racerstar Racing Edition 2212 BR2212 980KV Motors
Racerstar RS30A Lite 30A Blheli_S BB1 ESC
KK2.1.5 LCD Flight Controll Board V1.17S1PRO 6050MPU 644PA
Propeller 1045
TATTU 2200mAh 3s 11.1V 35c

Option2
Quadcopter Frame F450
Non Branded A2212 1000KV Motor
Non Branded 30A ESC
KK2.1.5 LCD Flight Controll Board V1.17S1PRO 6050MPU 644PA
Propeller 1045
TATTU 2200mAh 3s 11.1V 35c

Option 1, I will be sourcing motors, ESCs and FC from banggood. Rest from ebay.
Option 2, Only FC from banggood and rest all from ebay.

please help me choose the best or if what I choose will not work, please suggest something that I should go for.

Thanks.

if u go on to purchase from banggood, it tooks really min 20 days to deliver all the items u need or it tooks more days, if u want to purchase local motors ESC's buy from (robu.in) website, really good products they have quadcopter combo @ 3500rs,(4-motors,4- esc, 2-set props ) URL (https://robu.in/product/4-set-a2212-1000kv-brushless-motor-30a-esc-1045-propeller-set/), u can purchase 450mm frame from RC bazaar website cost @ 1300rs , the FC u can choose kk board or cc3d, always try to order with in India which excludes customs issues and u get the items within 3 days after confirming order then u can start to work, i think really this helps u, Salute

I would first suggest you to buy good transmitter. fs-i4 is no good for quads. Better you try to switch to fs-i6.
I suggest to go with option 1. Don't go with cheap non branded motor ESC combination they are unreliable. Rest of the things looks good for a beginner setup.

@karthik Raja
I was initially considering that same motor, ESC, prop combo from eBay.
But then I thought I will go for branded (racerstar) from banggood. They are shipping with India direct mail. So far all my orders with India direct mail came through fine. So I don稚 mind waiting.

@balakrishna Reddy
I really would like to stay with my fs-i4x. Will there be any compatibility issues using this? I just want basic flying only. No camera, telemetry, fpv or anything as such.

My doubt is will those racerstar blheli ESC have compatibility issues with kk board or with my rx?
Kk2.15 can I use it as it is from shop? Or should I worry about some firmware flashing? One from banggood is Kk2.1.5 v1.17S1PRO and ebay in has hobbyking kk2.1.5 v1.6 ebay one is 800 rs more. Which one to go for?

You were born an original don't die a copy.

Those esc's are opto esc's and are generally used in racing quads. You will need a separate 5v supply to power the board and receiver. Generally this is done by using a pdb which has a 5v output.

@sim_tcr
you want 10-15 minute flight time then use efficient  propeller(like 9443) & motor.

How about if I go for below ESCs, Can you please tell me the one that is compatible with racerstar 980KV motor, kk2.1.5 motor and FS-A6 Rx (comes with FS-i4x)?

Generic yellow/red 30A
Generic yellow/red simonk 30A
Emax Simonk Series 30A

please help me choose 3S lipo

My motor load current is 10.6A.
so 4 motors, the total current draw will be about 4 x 10.6A = 42.4A

TATTU 2200mAh 3s 11.1V 35c
Gens ace 2200mAh 11.1V 25C 3S1P

Max continuous Amp draw (A) = Battery capacity (Ah) x Discharge rate (C)
2.2Ax35C=77A
2.2Ax25C=55A

With either lipos above, Max continuous Amp draw (A) is coming above 50A. So am i good with lipo's selected?
If there are better option in the budget range please let me know.

Thanks

@sim_tcr
Current never be pushed. Current can be pulled.
you can get more flight time with 35C.

@sim_tcr,
If you draw 44amps from a 2200mah lipo till it is down to 50%, you値l get 1.5min duration.
At hover the current draw will be far less.
See reply #7 and #23 in this thread:
http://www.rcindia.org/multirotors/cg-balancing-in-quadcopter-need-help/msg286911/#msg286911

I usually do not draw over 10C from lipos rated 20-30C, and never use more than 50% of the capacity. Due to this conservative approach my lipos (Zippy) are still in use after over 5 years.
The other important thing is to store the lipo at 50% charge (~3.85v) and not fully charged.

Are you also saying the lipo I selected is too small for this build? I was expecting 8 to 10 minutes fly time. And I was planning to run the lipo till 3.8V on any cell.
After use, I use skyrc imax b6 to do storage charge on the lipo.

No.
Your current draw is likely to be far less than 40-45amps.

One can expect 7-8gms/watt from these props at low rpm, like half throttle.
So a 1kg quad should hover at ~ 120 watts, or say 10 amps.

Did you see the 2 posts in the link I sent?
They address exactly this question.

@K K Iyer
Yes I did read those two posts or the whole thread. I am new to this and not really good at math :-(. I am trying to get an approximate fly time with lipo I am buying.
I am giving my details below,

Motor 2212 980kv- 50gmx4 - 200gm
props 1045 - 17gmx4 - 68gm
ESC - yet to confirm on ESC model, lets assume its 25gmx4 - 100gm
Frame 450 - 280gm
FC - 25gm
lipo - 260gm
misc - 50gm
total - 983gm, lets round it of to 1kg

One lipo TATTU 2200mAh 3s 35c (178gm) and another TATTU 3300mAh 3s 35c (260gm)
considering the weight of 3300mah and if i can get some more flight time with 3300mah, i am ready for that.
please advice.

Actually, duration is the least of your concerns at this stage.
You値l have an interesting  Grin time just setting up the quad so that it can hover reasonably without too much pilot input. Remember that the KK board has no altitude or position hold.

Estimating the duration is not difficult.
My 820gm quad hovers at ~10 amps (I致e measured it)
So your 1kg quad may draw say 12 amps to hover.

At 3.3 amps, a 3300mah (ie, 3.3 amp hour) lipo will last 1 hour. It値l then be permanently dead  Grin
At four times that draw, say 13amps, it will last 1/4 hour, or 15 min.
Since you値l try to avoid discharging to below 50%, you値l get a hover duration of 7-8 minutes.

Try to get 2-3 lipos instead of just one!

Yes I am looking forward to that very much. Hopefully with all you peoples' help, I will pass that stage.

I am bit confused about 50%. On RC cars, I typically use Lipo volt checker device from ebay, and stop running when it shows 3.8V on any cell

Try to get 2-3 lipos instead of just one!
To run one after another to have more flight time? If so I will wait for to have a stable quad first then buy another lipo.

3.8v is just under 50%
If it shows 3.8 at rest, its probably ~3.5 under load.
Set your cutoff to 10.5v for a 3s.

I am trying to decide on ESCs for the build.
My motor is Racerstar 2212 980kv with Load Current of 10.6A

I do have cheap option of "generic non-branded 30A simonk"
and bit expensive DYS 30A simonk model - MB30030
Can an one please help me choose? or suggest better?
I did look at EMAX, which are beyond my budget.

@sim_tcr,
Just occured to me that you may not have purchased anything yet, but are searching for the 礎est

When we find that a Mercedes or BMW is the best, we go ahead and buy a Maruti.

Perhaps better than trying to mix and match 礎est parts, is to go for a 喪eliable combo.

If you contact Quadkopters.com and talk to Mr Satyagupta, the owner, you値l probably get what is best for your needs/budget without any more research.

Worth giving it a try.
BTW I have no connection with them except as a satisfied customer.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

I am not looking for the best, but something that would give a nice experience for a first timer.
