Nearly five months have past since I took up this hobby, and after Sky surfers, Shikras and Flying wings, a multirotor was my next choice.
FPV was on my mind as well, and due to lack of proper flying space, FPV with a Quadcopter seemed logical.
So my research began, and after hours of searching on the forums and countless Youtube videos, I fell in love with the 250 size mini quads. There are many to choose from, but the "Blackout mini" appealed to me the most.
Then I saw the price of just the frame and the proverbial "hawa nikal gayi".
9000/-  + shipping for just the frame. Shocked
So my new mission was to make a high end mini Quad on a low end budget.
My first step was to get the frame fabricated, and Quadkopters.com came to my rescue.
I downloaded plans from -http: //untestedprototype.com/  and give full credit to them.
Plans were sent to Quadkopters.com for pricing. I chose carbon fiber for materiel and to my surprise the total cost worked out to below 1600/- delivered to my door.
1mm CF was used for the center plates and 2mm for the arms. The quality of work done by Satya and team was excellent. Hats Off

Good going ashimda. What power system are you planning to use on this quad?

Next came the electronics. For the best performance T-motors are recommended, particularly the MN1806 2300kv Motor, but they are over 2500/- X 4= 10K for
4 motors. So a little more research led me to some cheap alternatives.
SunnySky X2204S 2300kv are a favorite among the mini quad community, but they are practically impossible to find in stock. Another favorite  are the
RCX 1804 2400kv. The RCX are available and 4 motors work out to 2160/- Grin
All the above motors support 3 cell, so 3 blade props are not required.

My motors and speed controllers arrived today. Grin  So now the build can commence. The RCX motors come with cw and ccw thread and are good quality and weigh only 16g. The 10A RCX esc weighs in at 12g. I had originally settled for the KK 2.1 board as my first FC, but found the mounting screws did not match the Frame holes. Two holes lined up but the opposite two did not. I had also ordered the Crius MultiWii as a backup, but that too did not match the mounting holes. Bang Head
For those planning something like this, remember to measure everything.
Fitting the motors required a little filing so the screws line up, not a problem. I decided to fit all the Speed controllers on the dirty plate instead of the arms. More protection that way. I also fitted a power distribution board, but might solder the connections together.

Go with KK2.1. you can tune your quad on the field and there are so many topics available on the internet on various rc forums.

Yeah for ease of use KK 2.xx, least amount of tuning required in terms of setup. If you want something little more complicated with ability to add sensors later on then Multiwii.

Multiwii boards with exceptions can be equipped with lcd screen to program them on field without any computers and they can also be programmed via radio Tx .They can be hooked up with Bluetooth to change setting wirelessly. And there is an active community for support.

Well frankly for a general user, stability and auto level would be the same and you wont find much difference if you have properly tuned PID's on both boards. And tuning multiwii is a task in itself if this is your first attempt with multirotors. I faced a couple of problems with my first multiwii due to PID tuning which I never had attempted in kk 2.0 since defaults usually worked well for me.

I would suggest KK 2.1 or 2.1.5. You can move on to any other FC's later when you are comfortable and you will always have KK to fall back on Smiley

Finally managed to get my Mini Quad in the air. I broke the limited number of props I had, trying to tune the FC. Props arrived yesterday and took it for a test flight.
My first time flying a Quad, the only rotor experience was the V911.
The AUW w/o battery is 273g.
A few more pics and the test flight.

What is the capacity of the battery you are using?
And how are the motors holding up with 3S, heating issues?

Thanks everyone. I am using a 3cell 1800, and the Escs and motors barely get warm. My batteries are middle aged like me, and after a flight they seem a bit on warm side. Have ordered a new 3cell 1300, will compare the difference after they arrive.

I used the Mobius camera and yes the naza lite takes care of all the flight woes with ease. The KK2.1 was also giving me yaw problems and I had to give excessive trim to keep it fixed in one direction. The Naza is for a bigger quad I'm gonna build. I fitted it on the mini to get used to FPV. Once I get the hang of flying FPV I will try and get my hands on the Naze32 FC. From what I have read it is the preferred choice of the mini Quad community.

Nice flight and footage. It seems you are doing FPV using LCD screen. Where you strapped your cam? This quad has confine space. This is how i got mine setup. I have added recording cam to the bottom secured with sponge. No props in FOV.

Dharmik I would suggest you to get rid of dual battery setups, it just adds to AUW in mini quads. I found that, routing wires away from interferences helps a lot, you can also use LC filters if you wish, you can DIY them yourself. I made one myself with all the parts recycled from a dead AC pcb.

Thank you Everyone. I used Fatshark goggles for FPV, and the Mobius for HD recording. The Mobius is a great little cam, and for the money the video is great, but light changes do effect the image. Dharmik is right about lack of real-estate , I reassembled the quad today to make more space.

Very well done ashimda  Clap From concept to execution marvelously done   Salute  I tried quads (correHcopter Cheesy ) few years back (using KK blue board which had serious yaw issues) and was thinking of doing quads again. The information and links you provided earlier in this thread is very helpful. Cheers mate!

Great 250 (-; only problem with smaller quads is that lack of space and flight time

The mini quads were developed mainly for FPV. Because of the small size, flying these LOS, you have to keep it close or you can loose sight and orientation.
You are right though fitting all the  equipment can be a B..ch.

A 250 is actually too small for fpv u should rather use 330
U would at least  see something in the air when it goes far away
A 250 is rather better at indoors

Why do you need to see it when on FPV.

 ^^ Grin true,

On 250 only hardship is mounting items and weight sensitivity, but its doable because many are going for the small factor now-a-days with availability of parts specifically for that purpose. And you can carry it when your are holidaying/travelling or any other location to capture those shots which you would have never earlier or just have fun flying around.

And I am not much of a fan of absolutely gimbal stabilized video or very long flight times. 7-8 mins is about right for me, with some extra batteries if need be Smiley

See the pics how the tx,spare batteries, quad pack up inside a box, and it measures to the size of a 500size quad.

Thanks to satya recd my mini carbon set today with CC3D and motors. Now I have to wait really long at the mercy of Malaysia n post i dont know for how long for the carbon props, ESC and Mobius. It was a breeze to assemble dry fit in just 15 Mins.  Quality of carbon fibre was very neat. Wonder if it's been cut at Satya ' s setup or sourced ex trade.

This frame is good. Exact blackout clone but 30mm larger so it can fit 6 inch props also. Even I got me one. Impressed with the quality. would have costed same to design and cut our own frame.
Frame size can be further reduced by putting arms one hole in and drilling new ones.
This frame is all over china and ebay.

Sir actually i was planning to get it cut on my machine but then the cost of CF sheets was very high and did not knew how to response would be hence i modified the design and gave to my supplier and he got it done for me.

@pravesh yes its all over the market now but just beware some of these sell same frame made using cheap carbon product. And some say carbon but send Glass Fiber.

Thumbs Up

Exactly what I was hoping to hear Satya. Even I have heard a lot about the cheap Chinese clones with very poor carbon fiber.

I was pleasantly surprised to see your frame which looked Ex Trade quality cut but with the carbon fiber of amazing quality.

Thank you sir, I have been trying my best to get good quality products. These days you can find clone of every other product in china market. Its very hard to find good and trust worthy suppliers who would genuinely tell you whats clone and whats original.

Try my best Thumbs Up Hats Off

Plans were sent to Quadkopters.com for pricing. I chose carbon fiber for materiel and to my surprise the total cost worked out to below 1600/- delivered to my door.

Can I have the same plans cut on CF and delivered to hyderabad?

The setup are as under

Frame Clone Backout mini
Flight controller CC3D (yet to add a GPS and OSD/telemetry). I can hardly find any more space to do so.
Receiver FrSky Tfr4 CPPM used.
Motors RCX 1804 2400KV.
Props 5x3 Carbon fibre (HK)
ESC Simonk 10 Amps Satya Gupta.
Mobius HD Cam
FPV Fatshark 600tvl min cam with 600mw 5.8Ghz tx and clover leaf.

Its a pain to plug a USB cable because of restricted space to tweek codes. I think I need to add the bluetooth module for the time being. Need to add tubes for the receiver aerial too.  God how i wish the USB port could have been to the sides.

A little heavy with that battery. Most people use 1300's, but I have found that the Wild scorpion 1500 weighs less than a turnigy 1300.
I realize now why people buy such expensive frames such as the Blackout, frame weight ultimately controls final AUW.

Your presumption that its heavier is wrong Ashimda.  Please watch this video

Contrary to your belief the frame is lighter in comparison to some reputed brands. Without Mobious and Lipo some of them weigh up to 390 gms whereas this frame in same config weighs only 360 gms. Yes you are correct on that part that Turnigy nanotechs are heavier than some other brands. Lipo I have used is a Nanotech.

He is mostly biased against Chinese products. Though he may be sharing most of our views, and we all know to an extent the reason for that and have to take it with a pinch of salt.   Yes videos follows.
