hi guys!
i need some help in selecting a new module for my FS TH9x  Transmitter. I was considering HK's Orange Rx Module, but i don't know if it is compatible with the stock firmware of the transmitter or not.

This is the one i am considering... http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=24656.html

Also, Is there anyone here who has flashed Er9x or Open9x onto their Transmitter's? Because i am getting confused with the process...

EDIT: can i use this USBasp AVR prgrammer? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__27990__USBasp_AVR_Programming_Device_for_ATMEL_proccessors.html

Thanks and regards
Sincerely
Aniket

I have read a lot about FrSky DJT 2.4ghz modules, people swear by it, I have ordered one for myself but its the frSky DIY module.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__14349__FrSky_DJT_2_4Ghz_Combo_Pack_for_JR_w_Telemetry_Module_V8FR_II_RX.html

And yes you can use that USBasp AVR programmer.

And where are you getting stuck on er9x?

I am getting confused on the soldering part. they keep talking about a. new board and old board... so I really don't know exactly where to solder all the wires, because the guide is for the turnigy 9x v2 and not the fsth9x

The only difference in old and new board is the sck pad,
I think the sck pad in the old board was misplaced so it had to be soldered directly to the pin/resistor.

Your board should probably be the new one, a pic would have helped.

Both of them from  ebay.in and digibay.in are same as HK, you can use that. Along with that you can also buy 10-6 pin adaptor. It just made things easy for me as a beginner.

http://www.ebay.in/itm/10-Pin-6-Pin-Adaptor-Board-Converter-USBASP-USBISP-/190872894147?pt=IN_Toys_Games_School_Stuff&hash=item2c70e93ac3

And will post a pic of my tx later. I have performed the same mod.

You can use any USBAsp as long as follows the fisch.de design.

The easiest route would be to use the 10-6 pin adaptor and eepe for programming and editing. Using avrdude on the command line can be intimidating in the beginning.

Here are photos from two recently flashed... (The dark brown wire in the close up picture is MOSI - pin 1)

PS: I found cat 5e network cable as a good candidate for wiring. Ribbon wire is generally too fragile for my big hands Cheesy and the insulation gives way with the soldering iron.

The following go without saying, but since you mentioned "hardware", this completes the list  Wink Thumbs Up

- A x86 PC
- soldering iron, solder wire and solder flux,
- tweezer (comes in real handy) and a baby vise
- CA glue or hot glue to stick the connector on the body
- multimeter or a continuity tester (optional)
- screwdriver, pliers and hammer (optional)
- wire stripper/cutter/sharp teeth/nails
- heatshrink (optional)
- workbench (optional)

All the best.  Thumbs Up

This should help.

http://andybrown.me.uk/wk/2010/11/14/usbasp-drivers-for-64-bit-windows-7/

Ubuntu I think it should work out of the box. Has native libusb support for x64 I believe but haven't tried.

Yes the orange module should work with stock firmware...Read more below. But yet I would recommend you FrSky module.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1810406

And your board is the same as in the pic I had posted earlier,
Pics posted by Girish, its similar to your board, same mod.

okay great! Smiley i am going for orangeRX mainly because it is a good module for my need with a wide range of recievers... i really dont need 8ch all the time... i can easily make do with 6, for smaller models...

also, my flysky module has been acting all strange. sometimes while flying, the aircraft stops responding for a few seconds now and then, which can get pretty scary...

i almost crashed my bixler the other day thanks to radio lockout.... it caught signal at the last minute, and i managed to pull out of the dive and belly land in tall grass.

anyways, thanks for your help guys. i will update here when i get around to flashing my Tx.

thanks and regards

I second SideWinder on FrSky. It is very resilient and if you mod with the telemetry kit, you can soon move on to modding with the FrSky firmware, all telemetery right on the radio, no FLD-02 or similar required. All this at an affordable budget. One of the members on RCI has successfully flown Long range FPV on that combo with high powered boosters and directional antennas. FrSky claims a 1.5 kms range out of the box, so you can imagine the signal strength. FrSky also has 4, 6 and 7 channels at reasonable prices, alike Orange.

One out the two I did recently will soon be getting the telemetry mod. Will post pics when I do that.

But go with whatever suits you; Like once an aero modeller said "You will have peace of mind...if not anything else."

hmm... now I'm left with a tough decision :Smiley

1.5 kms is tempting Tongue

so is the telemetry part... let me weigh the pros and cons. and make a decision.... I'll post here soon... thanks girish bro!

@ainket: ill suggest you two things.
1. instead of going Orange module go for Frsky DIY module because its more reliability than Orange and you will get 4 channel park receiver just for $12.
2. or buy  FrSky DJT 2.4ghz its a very simple module just plug and play no need of soldering or programming. and it has failsafe system too  Thumbs Up

Agree with Nithin, the module is easier to install, just plug n play, but is expensive as compared to the DIY kit and if you're opening the Tx for er9x mods, you only need 3 additional solders, and 5 rightly sized holes in the Tx with the DIY kit. What you get is a lighter TX and the antenna coming out of the antenna mount on top rather between the handle bar... looks neater and gives 2 degrees of freedom of movement...so take your pick.

Moral of the story: Oranges are tasty, but FrSky is Apple Cheesy

+1 Girish  Hats Off DIY module is better becuase TX and the antenna comes out of the antenna mount on top and looks neat. so easily you can keep the radio on the ground any time. Thumbs Up

Agree with Girish , Consider Frsky ACCST...

For ER9X updation , you may consider PIN wise  location instead of colors of wires. You can use any connector , just match the wires comming from USBASP( output  )  and  TX ( Input).

ok then I guess I will go with the frsky setup... but if I use the diy mod, can I use another module by removing the flysky module?

I started by opening up the remote, and soldering the wires for the er9x mod. while soldering a pad, i lifted my iron and burned the track all the way from the atmel proccessor to the resistor. then while trying t solder it back, i pulled that tiny resistor only...  Bang Head

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y529/aniket210696/2013-12-16121828_zps8668f39a.jpg
[HELP] FS TH9x Orange Rx Compatibility + er9x flashing

so i soldered another 1k resistor from the atmel processor's 3rd pin to the the pad of the resistor... (those pins are tiny!)

[HELP] FS TH9x Orange Rx Compatibility + er9x flashing

i finally managed to solder the wires to my board.

then i soldered the 3 wires of the frsky diy kit to the 3 connectors on the back cover's board. put a blob of hotglue on it. i also tapped the green wire coming out of the board( it's part of the bunch that you disconnect when you dismantle your  Tx so you can pull the 2 halves open) and connected a switch to it to turn the module on and off. (you can see the switch on the right of the antenna.)

Good job aniket,
not necessary but you might want to get rid of that heatshrink covering on the diy module and use double sided tape to secure the pcd solder side down...

Also you might want to change that resistance to 220ohms to be in line with the other ones...
