My advice is to get it without its packing, in your main baggage.

also, to get ready with the ans the questions about the radio, just in case the baggage is open.

If it goes through then no issues if they ask to open, then the person should be ready with answer to convince it about the hobby part and should have invoice copy too for justifying the cost and hobby part.

most of the international airports have the incoming baggage x-rayed for materials (even handbags). So I am not sure whether the radio has packing or not makes a difference

i think, its make the difference as big box drags the attention as normally the box size is nearly 2.5 times size of the radio. while in the open case, the radio, battery, charger, etc can be kept separated which also saves the packing space.

however in the end it completely depends upon the luck and open packing works as a +ve catalyst to increase your luck factor.

Hi, my radio is also from u.s. brought along with box. infact that they missed the baggage which came in the next flight and yes it a matter of luck. my other friend was also successful. i feel you can take risk. wish you are lucky

Confused... this thread already answers the question very clearly.

Also, a simple search (for "transmitter luggage" and "radio luggage") leads to posts like these :

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-general-topics/india-to-us-air-travel-with-transmitter-in-check-in-luggage/

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-general-topics/airport-customs-issues/

Between these two threads, I hope it answers the question with even more clarity.
