I am getting myself a Turnigy 9XR Pro. I have a few queries regarding the same. Such as what firmware to use? Should I solder resisters or buy cables to access Telemetry functions when using with a FrSky DJT? What batteries are you using? Can I use a 25C 3s LiPo? (Yes I can, read the manual). Haha. Similar questions but extremely confused on what firmware to use. I don't know anything. All I know is it comes with ER9X or something but something called OpenTX is working on firwares for the same. What to use?? What not to? Why? Can someone help me out please.

Sorry for being such a 'noob'. Just that I'm moving on from LHS Clone Tx Rx Kit I don't know much about these big bad (budget) radios yet. Cheers.

- if you're a beginner, even er9x is an overkill. er9x and opentx are both great firmwares, use any.

- Your budget, time availability and electronics skill determines whether to go down the DIY route or buy off the shelf.
What batteries are you using? Can I use a 25C 3s LiPo?
- I use a Lipo; 5c is enough. the current draw does not need a 25c lipo. 3s is alright.
I don't know anything
- you dont have to know everything ;). There is a cool learning curve. go with the flow. you will know a lot of things very soon.

Yes, I went through the RCIndia forum multiple times, I just wanted to be sure that's why I created the thread. Started it with the apology  :) Among ER9X and OpenTX, according to you, which is better and has better support?

I don't want to be that RTFM guy, but there is quite a lot of info available online, just search.

So the 9XR Pro comes with a variant of the er9x firmware called ersky9x. It is pretty powerful but you can also use openTx which is more capable but has a steeper learning curve. BTW, openTx is what the Taranis runs. I would suggest you try both and choose whichever you are comfortable with. As Girish Sir said, both have features that are overkill when you start.

To access FrSky Telemetry on the 9XR Pro, you need a specific cable that plugs into the back of the DJT module at one end and into the radio's simulator port at the other. You only need to solder if you get a 9XR or 9x. BTW, the standard FrSky DJT combo set comes with a V8FR (non telemetry) receiver. If you want telemetry, you can drop RcProduct a mail and ask for a set with a D-series receiver (I bought a set with the D8R). It will cost you extra though.

HobbyKing has a specific LiPo designed for the 9XR[Pro] but honestly, I don't like the idea of having a LiPo in my radio. I definitely wouldn't trust the internal charging feature. I use a 3 cell LiFe battery which runs at around 3.3V per cell most of the time, less than a LiPo.

Considering the fact that to utilise FrSky telemetry apart from the 9XR Pro (8600), you will have to buy a telemetry module set (4300), telemetry cable(300) and battery (1000), you will have hit the 14K mark plus shipping and taxes and so on (if applicable). If you can stretch another 4K, you can get the Taranis X9D+. For that amount, you get the radio, battery, neck strap along with one of the new X8R receivers. The Taranis is supposed to have far better ergonomics and build quality, has an internal module (the new XJT which supports long range receivers too), supports a 2nd module in the module bay and also has several extra features. I feel the Taranis is a solid investment. Unfortunately, it was overkill for me at my level, apart from the fact that it was too expensive.

The simple answer:

I'd start with er9x and upgrade to opentx after familiarization with er9x.

The more complicated answer:

- They're both based on the same source, so the 'kernel', so to speak, is the same.
- They have slightly different user interface and mixer option, you will have to use both to understand what suits you. They are similar.
- er9x is simpler but opentx has more options for telemetry and alarms
- You can program them one by one on the radio and see what suits your preference and usage.
- er9x is older so the user base is much larger.
- the companion for opentx is much powerful (smarter?) as compared to eepe (simpler)
