Title: Help for upgrading old FM radio
Post by: Voice of deaf on May 24, 2016, 01:40:13 PM
Hi i have a futaba t6xa 36 mhz  (no modular)   without reciever.
And i want to make it usable.
Dear reader , I need your help .
I have following choices

1. Buy a 36 mhz receiver
https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7219__Corona_Synthesized_Dual_Conv_Receiver_6Ch_36Mhz.html

2. Buy a frsky diy module and its rx.
www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__40205__OrangeRX_DSMX_DSM2_Compatible_2_4GHz_DIY_Transmitter_Module.html

3. Buy orange RX 2.4 module  and stab rx.
4. Buy a OrangeLRS  433 mhz module with rx.

www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__40032__OrangeRX_Open_LRS_433MHz_Transmitter_100mW_compatible_with_Futaba_radio_.html

Each has its own advantage.
As i am a beginner and need your help to choose the best  setup for me.
Priority with decreasing order.
1. Range
2. Price
3. Reliability
4. Little features like stab

Do check for compatibility of modules with your tx. Modules in your link are not compatible with futaba but they are compatible with JR. Watch this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrqM1dVuX_8
If you want to communicate with the modules through any firmware of your own it may not be a problem.
However there is no stock of certain modules. You can instead try frsky modules also.
Once you check does it have separate module for transmitter so that you can plug some module as shown in video.
Post some pics removing back cover so that we can have a look.
In the above modules Orange rx seems to be better and has good range also.

Please go ahead for this module.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__17205__FrSky_DHT_8ch_DIY_Telemetry_Compatible_Transmitter_Module.html.

This is perfectly compatible with Futaba.

Compatible with V8R4/V8R7-HV/V8R7-SP/V8FR-HV recievers in 1 way non-telemetry Mode.
Compatible with D4FR/D6FR/D8R.D8R-II recievers in 2 way telemetry Mode.

I have one modified to be used as a slap on box to be connected thorough trainer port. If you need any assistance in wiring diagram or on how to upgrade you are most welcome to please see any of my old thread of radio upgrades or ping me.

Reliability of Frsky is marvelous. Its dual mode with single and bidirectional com, with telemetry port separately available with possibility of many cool feature upgrades.

However your radio though is too old with analogue switches and sliders. May be an over kill for the present setup. Notwithstanding you can always use the same module with any of your future radios.

i am also leaning on frsky diy.
But what are your views on OrangeRX STAB 2.4

Hi never really had a good experience with any thing orange HK. Have not used a 3 axis stab receiver so cannot comment.

Once had got an orange 433 1 watts module and rx. But never really used it. Unfortunately had burnt mine in an attempt to upgrade to open lrsng firmware in confussion of 3.3 volts FTDI and 5 volts FTDI.

Okay that means if i buy the 1watt tx module and the 9ch rx

www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__27096__OrangeRx_Open_LRS_433MHz_9Ch_Receiver.html

. And fit each and everything like ppm in to tx module and 5v power in etc. Then it will bind without any firmware updates?
Am i Right ?

Absolutely. Firmware update is only optional to enjoy the better protocols of open LRSNG.

Okay any comments on whether the it will pass through the customs ?

Ask the seller not to mention it as receicer instead to make it get through. I dont think customs will scan it. It would get through easily then.

Hobbysea keeps them in stock. I would suggest the Frsky Mod also, Rx are cheap and very reliable! Frsky in one of the most reliable rc link you can get for great prices!
And with arduino you can make a telemetry system out of it!
Orange LRS on the other hand is like it may or may not work. I bought one module from Hobbysea turned out to be a dud one! Hobbysea was kind and helpful and replaced it immediately! With Frsky you will be sure that it will work all the time, whenever you switch it on!
Also there are even cheaper Frsky Compatible Rxs made by KS-SERVO.
Orange LRS doesn't come with a proper or 433Mhz matched antenna, and that 1W module outputs around 400-450mW power.

If going for Orange LRS look into the OpenLRSng FW and ULRS FW (http://www.itluxembourg.lu/site/). Currently I am using the ULRS FW(with my Pixhawk) on the Orange LRS. It requires no binding and also provides telemetry link that can be used to replace the Telemetry Radios of APM/Pixhawk(OrangeLSR Telemetry is supposed to be faster than the APM/Pixhawk Radios and also gives longer range). With better tuned antennas long range can be achieved!

Hope this helps!

Reliability of Radio link outweighs everything else. In terms of reliability of radio link and economy of price, frsky beats everything else hands down.

You have answered yourself to your choice as at my Reply # 14.  {:)} {:)}

But approx 3K may be under too in some combination as per your choice of Rx.

i am asking so because i am going to use 5.8 ghz 250 mW FPV with it
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__75941__Turnigy_VTX250_LTE_Video_Transmitter.html

so i want the optimum setup to do fpv on a plane .
so whats the best frequency 433mhz or 2.4GHz or 36MHz to use with 5.8GHz FPV setup.
i need help over this topic.

Title: Re: Help for upgrading old FM radio
Post by: sundaram on May 27, 2016, 12:07:17 PM
My optimum setup is 2.4 Ghz radio and 1.3 Ghz for video.

If you have made up your mind about your optimum setup at 433Mhz Radio and 5.8Ghz please do go ahead without seeking anyone'e approval as that is not a bad choice either.

Let me remind you that most of us do use a 2.4Ghz Radio and 5.8Ghz video without any issues or hassles at all.

Post by: Voice of deaf on May 27, 2016, 12:33:11 PM
So the 2.4 and 5.8 dont interfere at all ?
And what about
36mhz

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7219__Corona_Synthesized_Dual_Conv_Receiver_6Ch_36Mhz.html
for rc and 5.8 for fpv.
I am trying to to go the cheaper way to save some bucks for my brothers radio.

36mhz and 5.8ghz too don't interfere
