However, HK should have given much credit to Eriz and other authors of both er9x and th9x on their website.

Update: Guess they've done that, but only in retrospect.

Yea..They should have been more specific while giving acknowledgement instead of giving credits to the entire RC community. It has nothing to do with me,so i really dont care  >:D..And i dont think the developers are gonna stop development for this simple reason.

Ok..I am gonna keep the review as brief as possible..There's gonna be nothing regarding programming, further review will be made after i get the module.

First of,lets all consider the fact that this particular radio is never the version 3 of the flysky th9x(which was rebranded by turnigy) like most of the people think. The turnigy 9x itself was a flysky th9x knock off. Turnigy managed to tweak some changes with the original radio like their V2 firmware and antenna which came attached to the Tx instead of the module. These changes were never seen in the flysky.
So in short, the exterior physical parts consisting of Tx housing, knobs, switches were all designed in house by Turnigy which is owned by hextroniks which also owns HobbyKing. The rest of the parts like the PCB(MCU and other components) and LCD are the exact same as the previous version.

The major improvements when compared to the turnigy 9x

-ergonomics,the ball bearing gimbals feel great, switches and knobs though not the best is good when the price is considered. The Tx is much slimmer which is quite apparent.Really nice to hold and operate considering the position of the switches. The housing has a handle which is a definite requirement. The sticks can be height adjusted and comes very handy for different set of people using other radios. And the plastics are also of decent quality which is gonna make it last a little longer. You also have the option to switch face-plates,which is simply awesome!

-Some changes are brought in with transmitter which were considered mods in the previous version. These changes brings flexibility to the users
Provision to connect 3s lipo with a balance plug connector
AVR port to re flash with custom firmwares (Note:It comes with a 6 pin connector)
  Back lit LCD
Internal antenna(not a previous mod and i am kinda apprehensive about these)
Futaba trainer port which comes useful for power for fpv application and extended trainer compatibility

-scope,though the whole radio revolves around the opensource compatibility and support for different mods. When it comes to hardware mods you are a bit tight on space inside. They shouldn't have used the same MCU if they were looking for hardcore open source enhancement. This is gonna limit the immense possibilities of the radio. Hopefully a third party PCB additions like ersky would come handy for the advanced users. But it is definitely a consolation for the general non advanced users(like me) wholooks forward to have the flexibility without having to solder anything.

Modules supported by the radio

Though Turnigy claims the radio supports all JR compatible modules, keeping apart technical compatibility modules like frsky have trouble fitting in without having to brush some plastic off to get contact with all the 5 pins. All the orange modules fits in good, not sloppy and pins makes perfect contact. They also have a DSM module which utilizes the internal antenna of the Tx made particularly for this radio

Battery support

I got my zippy 2200maH 3s lipo to fit in the battery bay.According to me this is the maximum recommended capacity as the space becomes tight with the battery and the power plug inside. The position of the connector should have been placed somewhere else because when you close the battery lid,it causes strain on the balance wires. Turnigy warns us to be careful while using other batteries as the balance wire configuration may be different. I am not sure of they actually mean .They have a battery being released just for the 9xr. Regarding the DC battery charger port,i really don't know why its actually even there. Some people in the 9xr forum says the battery meant for this radio is gonna have some kind of inbuilt circuitry to perform balancing while we charge it through the DC port :P.The package comes with a sticky foam to be used inside the battery bay.

Rating

I would give it a 9/10 considering,

price($49.99) - 10/10,
looks - 9/10(they are just too good, specially with the lighting),
flexibility - 9/10(AVR port,Futaba port,Lipo support,Module support)
ergonomics - 8/10

Succinct review my friend. I too feel they should've replaced the MCU with an ARM chip perhaps (they'd have had to rewrite the fw in that case) and thrown in frsky integrated and matched the price to t9x with module. Honestly, I think the 2.4 rubber ducky antenna sticking out looks much cooler ;). it looks more like a Tx then.

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: muradshak on January 05, 2013, 05:42:59 PM
Thanks girish..a radio without antenna is like ladu without sugar  :P..sources say hk has already retweaked er9x,if they had chosen a powerful atmega series of processors only minor changes would have required with the code..i think the ,primary reason would be to keep the price at the 50 dollar margin..The radio already offers so much for so less, asking more would be really unfair from a seller's perspective..iam one happy man ;D,cant ask for more..

I have upgraded / converted my tr9x  to er9x and all seems to be same as 9XR...
design seems to be changed and made compatible to use any module....i will try to change mine also to use any module...

Sandeep,i think the 9x already supports all JR Format modules..There is nothing to change :)

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: girishsarwal on January 05, 2013, 06:35:05 PM
The one difference that really looks good is the change in the gimbals especially for 'dusty' flyers like me. That I'd consider a real hardware change. But yes its like buying a t9x modded by professionals; and saving *a lot* of effort

True girish..the gimbal change is nice to have..and also true,it saves quite a lot of effort..

Notice on er9x forum:

IMPORTANT NOTICE - TURNIGY 9XR
Hobbyking/Turnigy ave just released a radio called 9XR which has a port for a programmer and an installed backlight. This is a very welcome addition since it makes programming the radio very easy for the novice. That being said, they have not given credit to the originators and contributors and they have not released the code as required by the GNU 2.0 software license.
So while we are very happy to see them make the 9XR radio we do want them to acknowledge the hard work and the effort made by all the contributors. Please let them know how you feel about this.
We have tried to contact them but have not been able to receive any response. We'll update here if and when we get one.

The Eurgle/FlySky/Imax/Turnigy 9x r/c Transmitter is a nicely built unit basically copied from a more recognized manufacturer.

The unit itself hosts an Atmel AtMega64 8-bit MCU. The hardware includes 2 sticks, 3 potentiometers and 7 switches. It also supports a 128x64px screen without a back light.

This project aims to replace the software that comes with the standard transmitter with a more powerful and flexible version.

This project is based on he th9x project. http://code.google.com/p/th9x/

This is published on http://code.google.com/p/er9x/

I read here that they've included the original firmware authors' name in the user manual, muradshak you may be able to confirm:

girish, the package din't include a manual. It came with a quick start guide and they have asked us to download the manual from their site under the files tab of the product window. They simply copy pasted the entire er9x manual, which they should be ashamed of.Secondly, they found time to remove the original authors. And when the open source community responded they came up with a lame excuse saying they were in a hurry when they tried to release the product on Christmas eve.Following the response, they included some names in their version 2 manual which i haven't currently checked.

..

Yea so true, they even left sentences like "bear with me..." and screenshots showing GOOFI as the name. If they'd have credited the authors I'm sure HK would have taken a bigger credit up its sleeve; and yea if those pots were replaced with hall effect sensors, this thing would be phenomenal....It anyways is at the moment ;)

I flew my sky surfer with the 9XR transmitter today. As I am used to heavy radios this felt light. i used the frsky module in the back. No problems as of now. Sticks are better than 9X. I need to adjust the indent but overall I would say guys go ahead.

Is there anyone out there with a ham lisence if so please let me know cause I have always wanted to do a long range fpv project....

Anirudh,we both are in the same boat..Even iam planning to do the same..I wouldnt be going too far with my gear though..Iam gonna take my baby steps..I think you should look at the cheaper and legal(not in the whole sense)alternative to UHF by using a 2.4gh signal booster with the frsky module which will give you a range of 10+km by www.bevrc.com (http://www.bevrc.com)

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: Anirudh Ravi on January 11, 2013, 06:59:37 PM
That's great to know that someone else had also planned about something similar.... But I guess I'm gonna go with a tc which has a range of atleast 2km something like the spektrum dx8 I know it's expensive but I have an open ended budget when it comes to radio equipment cause that's what is primarily holding you're plane up in the sky and giving you the capacity to control..... I hope that there are no customs issues for bringing the dx8 to India...... Thanks

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!

Frsky fitted without any issues. Just plug the module and bind the receiver and do the range test before the flight to make sure the installation is ok.
Cheers

Let me know what kind of range are you getting with the frsky module.... What do you fly by the way ???

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: muradshak on January 12, 2013, 12:11:38 PM
Anirudh - Iam flying a sky surfer.
The frsky module has been reported to have a range of 1.5+km LOS. It also features failsafe for all the channels.I also ordered a 5dBi antenna which is said to double the range. With this setup i can easily get a 2.5km without a hitch, may go further. I have a really tight budget hence iam looking for all the cheapest alternative to do FPV,and reliable ofcourse.
If budget is'nt a problem, get whatever you want. But i personally dont see any reason to get expensive tx's when you have a $50 tx with so much flexibility with the custom firmware and trainer ports and very reliable and tested module system like the frSky which will cost you 1/3 the price of the spektrum. You can spend that money on an arduipilot ar any similar autopilot systems to get your plane back.

Regarding fpv planes i would suggest you to get the skywalker. Tons of space inside for all your fpv gear

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: Anirudh Ravi on January 12, 2013, 01:15:01 PM
What your saying is also completely true.... But a range of 1 to 2km is not good enough for me I've decided to go with the futaba 7c.... And also failsafe is not a worry for me cause I'll be using the apm2.5 with the gos module.... I currently have a bixler 2 and love the design of the Skywalker x8 it just looks collosal in the sky but it's only bank and yank.... I tend to depend on the rudder a lot.... Cheers and happy flying....

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: muradshak on January 12, 2013, 01:26:53 PM
The range i mentioned was of the stock frsky setup, use a signal booster and you get 10+km range..If its UHF,you have plenty of JR standard modules like rmilec,ezUHF,chainlink, dragonlink etc that is more than compatible with 9xr..Anyways,the choice is all yours :)..Let  me know after you have finished your setup..happy flying  :)

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!

I thought the customs had a big problem with anyone bringing UHF systems to India ???

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: muradshak on January 12, 2013, 03:11:47 PM
That is until they check your parcel. I was kinda apprehensive about bringing a tx,but i heard some guys got their tx's without any problem. My order reached on the 9th day after shipping from hong kong. So,on the whole transmitter's are restricted items unless they are type approved. Above all UHF's which i heard is using the frequency used by police and secret services is definetely a no.But you have a chance of bringing it in without the customs noticing it.Whats left is the signal booster, though the 2.4ghz frequency is license free using a 1W transmission output is illegal.

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: Anirudh Ravi on January 12, 2013, 03:31:27 PM
Ya data exactly why I'm gonna stick to the futaba 7c.... Gives a range of 3 to 4km....

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: muradshak on January 12, 2013, 04:48:07 PM
There are lots of factors that affect the range of a radio system. If you plan to fly a distance of 4km,you need a system that proclaims 8km just to be on the safe side.Besides that 2.4ghz systems are never ideal for fpv especially long range.Reason being that you'll have to fly LOS whereas lower frequency systems penetrate obstacles. What ever radio you choose when it comes to long range fpv you'll need to do some mods. You can use a windsurfer reflector for your futaba which directs all the signal waves to the direction you want,it does something like directional antennas. You have lots of option bud..I suggest you to do some mods if you are looking for some serious range

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!
Post by: Anirudh Ravi on January 12, 2013, 05:41:33 PM
I'm actually not too worried about the radio part of it anymore.... I'm more worried about fpv equipment..... Do you know anyone who has a fatshark system here in India..... I mean the customs have a problem with anything related to rc it's just sad....

Title: Re: I got my TURNIGY 9XR!

I have seen lots of threads where people mention they bring fpv stuffs from hobbyking and bevrc..Even i plan to get it from them..Its a matter of luck getting stuff's through customs..Its rare to find fpv gears in LHS..There is www.hobbysea.com (http://www.hobbysea.com) who had some fpv equipments which went out of stock, not fat shark though..He said he can get me if i pay half the price and the rest after getting the item..Try contacting vineeth of hobbysea

Rob,there isnt currently any modules that support the internal antenna.Though hobbyking proclaimed its release, nothing is known as yet.All the modules in the market makes use of the built-in external antenna. For orange modules you can use the orange spectrum rx or any spectrum receivers i suppose

Is that any problem relating customs...means they restricted our tx or anything else or they are not allowing to using this as like security reason or something like this?

i also buying a storm 430 from helipal but it still showing in customs...

And please tell me how much time take of your turnigy after ordering...

Mine just took 2 weeks. But it depends on your area, how likely are customs to open your package to check its contents and your luck. I till date didn't have any troubles with kochi customs.

Step 1- place Order in hk. Ship through FedEx as it's hassle free and makes sense for 'personal' orders.
Step 2- wait a week.

Hi,

Why don't u look at buying 9XR from here itself I mean within India, if you do the math, it will be $50 + $25/30 for fedex + custom charges and other  delay issues, being this will be big box it has more chances of getting detained and if it's TX then god help us....it's more due to lack of knowledge to customs dept.

If you get by fedex then it's smooth delivery but you will end up paying taxes, customs, octroi etc...

If you get lucky with 0% customs then you will end up saving some 1500 odd bucks else you will save some 300-400 or might go above cost in india.

All depends how quick u want and ready to risk a bit...nothing can be said about customs here...very unpredictable...

I agree with what GhostRider said. I purchased my 9XR from Vineet of hobbysea.com. Smooth transaction and got it the following day. No waiting or tension. I also ordered the Frsky module with Telemetry RX. The setup works well and the radio is just superb. I am a noob but I was able to configure the radio by myself.  Like a lot of you, I have FPV on the brain. I did my homework and found the 9XR the best practical choice.

What was the delivery period?
Was the battery included in the price you mentioned or you bought it separately?

Thanks,
Nilesh

I'm a newbie to rc world and building my first quad. I was very much worried from where would I get a rc tx and rx without customs hassle and without paying more. This post really gave me courage. BTW, does this model have a packaged rx too like 9x?

Title: How good is turnigy 9xr?
Post by: vijai on May 03, 2014, 09:02:38 PM
Hello,
I'm a newbie starting to make a quad using aeroquad. Just started sourcing materials for it. (For now have arduino mega in hand and sensors+aeroquad pcb in shipping).
So now, I'm going to select my tx and rx. I have confusion between 9x and 9xr. I'm slightly inclined to 9x because it comes as a kit (tx + rx) so it's already in best match situation.

Although I like 9xr more, but I fear buying it due to it doesn't ship with tx and rx which means I have to go all the way selecting compatible 9ch or 8ch tx+rx. Can anybody help me in selecting the transmitter and receiver for 9xr? I prefer the price being close to 9x.

Regards,
Vijai

I'm afraid not. You will have to purchase the RX separately. Most LHS offer combos.

What does LHS mean? Also what model do you prefer. 9x or 9xr? And could you suggest me a compatible 8ch rx which compatible to 9xr which is cheap? I want to keep the price close to 9x as much as possible

Hi Vijai,
LHS means Local Hobby Shop. If you are from Chennai go to edall hobby. Also, try aero engineering works. A flysky 8 channel receiver works with Turnigy.

Thank you for the info. The combo seems costly in aero engineering works. I think of going with 9x because I wouldn't be fiddling with hardware much. Visiting aero engineering works on Monday though to get the motors and frame.

Go for the 9XR. It is an upgraded 9X. The 9XR does not come with a module or RX so you have a choice. If you can stretch your budget and go with FRsky combo you will not have to upgrade in the near future.

You can try searching for the receiver on other stores online. Or check here if someone can help you.
