What i would like to know is weather it is possible to convert a SIM to a full TX with a hack module and battery?
I know it may not be worth it costwise, but is it possible?

We can use Tx with as a sim so ,why  not the other way round?
The Tx coder provides the signal to rf board which modulates it on the carrier frequency.
So I think the SIM has only the coder portion and its signal should be able to modulate the
hack module. But all hack modules are not the same they are specific for different make of tx.
So which one will work with your sim ?

Totally agree with Jitendar.
There is not documented/supported ways to do this. Dummy Sim controllers are more of a USB 'Game' pads in terms of electronics than RC radio controllers. Most of the present radios encode the different channels in PPM/PCM encoding, which is then 'Fed' to the radio carrier module (27/42/72MHz/2.4GHz) for propagation. Its like any natural language conversation(English/French/Hindi/etc) fed to Cell phone (GSM/CDMA/Dua/Tri/Quad band).
http://www.aerodesign.de/peter/2000/PCM/PCM_PPM_eng.html

In Contrast, in Sim controllers, different control channels are encoded as USB HID, well understood by modern Windows/Linux OS in-the-box drivers.

The key difference is the intermediate encoding, and the Hacker 2.4G modules attaches to the intermediate PPM interface exposed at the back of the radio, which is totally missing in SIMs, which directly convert the channels to USB encoding, and there is noting in between to 'Tap' into. There is no place in SIMs (any of the popular sub 100$ SIM) where a Hacker module can physically or electrically fit into.

You cannot connect a cordless phone to your hand-held Cellphones as they don't expose a 50V analog PSTN singnal interface. (Not talking about 'Fixed'/Stationary Cell Base Phone hardware to which you can indeed connect fixed/cordless phone as they do expose such interface)

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

The question is, do the sims (all ? some ? many ?) have a stage where the signal is PPM ?  If yes, then it is easy to tap that and transmit it using a TX module of ones preference.

I haven't seen a lot of sim controllers, but I have a esky one. It uses a microcontroller with USB interface. Everything goes on inside one chip mass produced for USB game pads. No taps were available.

However it is quite easy to build a PPM encoder. The simplest one I have seen is http://w1.859.telia.com/~u85920178/use/rc-prop.htm

Or if you are savvy with microcontrollers, it is fairly easy to build one that way too.

I have too many 'connected' Hobbies like Electronics, HAM Radios, Photography and now Aeromodeling, under resurrection. My Paragliding instructor used to say - never take a new glider to a new flying area. always take the new glider to a drop zone known well to you, and try a new drop zone with a glider you have used often. Its risky to play with too many unknown variables.

The moral of the story, if you are new to Aeromodeling, its better to keep your electronics and use standard equipment and learn first. Only after getting comfortable do all the DIY and RnD.

You can find old 4/6 Ch  FM transmitter in Buy/Sell very easily. Get them and put a MOD. else you might goof up with  the electronics and the eminent crash would close the door to come back to RC flying at least for a long time. This would also enable to find an instructor who can hook up his Radio and you can fly in trainer/buddy mode. Doing a trainer MOD to the SIM would only be another giant step in R&D!

I am not suspecting anyone's DIY skills, just step wise manner investment one should make.

I think we definitely need these kinds of DIY in the country so that more prototypes could be made. Who knows, some day we can have local Radio manufactures in the country, like we have model makers today!
