Title: Lipo for th9x
Post by: srivatsa on July 05, 2012, 08:29:35 AM
Hi folks,

Can someone share opinion on using lipo on th9x transmitters ( turnigy and fly sky)?

I goth one lipo from leaders hobby for  fly sky th9x, forgot to remove the lipo from tx. after 2 weeks battery puffed waiting to explode. Luckily i noticed it on time and disposed it in time. No harm done to tx. Waiting to buy another lipo, any suggestions also welcome.

Thanks
Srivatsa

If you're planning to buy a LiPo, you might want to consider buying a LiFePo4 instead. LiFePo4 is considered a safer chemistry and has lesser chances of going up in flames (may smoke though) if mishandled. The per cell volts on a LiFePo4 is 3.3 v so a 3s amounts to 9.9 v against a 11.1 for a LiPo. With 9.9 v the radio tends to heat up lesser as against 11.1 v when in use. The only problem is charging a LiFePo4 with a balanced LiPo charger can caue the battery to swell (obvious voltage diff), so buy it only if you've a compatible charger.. thehobbyshop.in sells one and it works well (although mine is a little swell because I made the same mistake, but realized early).

Are we supposed to remove lipo battery from Tx after flying session? This does not make sense.

Did you forgot to turn the Tx off?

Hi amit,
I had triple checked   tx was off.
Even my understanding was if tx is off battery is safe.
But guess it discharges even if you turn off  perhaps a small amount across the voltage regulator or the resistor inside.

so, i think it'd not safe to Leave it inside for long.

Girishsarwal, thanks for that info.. i just checked, my charger has option for LiFe . Just ordered one from hobbyking  :-)

Btw, what is the low voltage cut off for life batteries?

Hi Srivatsa,

You can use Low self discharge NiMH instead of Lippo/ Life. It will gives you 9.6 V and safe for Tx. I am using the same ( Eveready Ultima 2100 mah Low self discharge  ) on my Fly Sky Th 9X with out any issue.

Mohan, i have Sony cycle energy 2500 mah nimh batteries, but the problem is charging time,  takes too long to charge all 8 batteries

I've tried Duracell normal, Duracell rechargeable, Sanyo NiMH, Eveready, even Nippo but I do like the LiFe, why because they stay at their optimum performace range (3.0 - 3.3 v) for quite long and charge quickly, No need for the 14 hour charge at c/10.

The low voltage cutoff is considered to be 2.8 v but mine goes back to the charger at 3.0 v, and well, no memory effect. the only thing I hate about it is the charge leads are short, the stock connector on the THS battery does not fit easily on the 9x; you can use the 3 pin servo like connector, that fits well on the battery header. And the wires are a little too short for in-situ charging.

I'm planning to cut off the lead wires from my old battery (the one which is puffed).
