hi mate
there are lipos that are 'supposed' to fit tx, but I got some and they are 1/8 in too thick, so the back will not go on and I had to use a 'thick' heavy type elastic band....this is with the futaba 6ex.......... so as a guide.. no thicker than the AA battery that it is designed for.
lipo will not really give a better run time in tx if you have the right size 'amh' nicad...the bigger the better......... some clubs will not allow 'separate' batteries to be used [as in esky tx] it must be a 'battery pack' this is one reason why people went for lipo to begin with.
if your tx takes 8 batteries then 12 volt [3s]  is ok but be aware of plug it in wrong way.......it will fry the tx befor you can unplug it.......
