Orange LR modules fitted well, rx  binding and connection was no issue, will fly fpv and let you all know further. side by side with 9X, 9XR is shade smaller and lighter (With the module)

Some Minuses

Menu key is sticky

Switches feel cheap

balancer wont fit with tx batt having shorter balancer
with the antenne connected to the module, you wont be able to keep the Tx down, solution is to connect it to the internal antenne, then you wont be able to change the module as often as i intend doing

Too bright a display for night flying

Standard tx stand wont fit, need to diy, then the ergo is lost

Has both the trainer ports,
A word about the case, case is good looking but has some play at the hinge and feels slightly cheaper and not as good as it looks.
hooking up to the PC, will report back on the software issues if any and flying reviews with FRSky, 9X, Orange LRS and Spektrum modules

PS
People who have it are welcome to participate. Who dont watch out this space

One could argue if module is included 9X is cheaper, but then you get good gimbals and next gen radio. ideal for FPV fliers, you could hook up your LR module for FPV and change over to normal module for other close vicinity flying

Menu key sucks..though unlike 9x it makes less noise while hitting a key, most of the time I have to press really hard to get any response..

That case and that side looks so sexy!

indeed  ;)

switches are placed at an angle which will require some getting used to, i would advice some mock blind folded reach of the switches before assisgning and flying with them

My 9xR works great with the Fly sky 9ch 2.4 Ghz module ;)
+1 for 9xR. It feels great when you hold a 9xR compared to a turnigy 9x. :D

Nice. But it dosnt matter. You are pro enough to make this radio turn better than a 9xR :)

Just a word of caution that Mode changes are tricky in 9XR. I bought a mode 1 as that was available at the time thinking it is easy to change to mode 2.
I landed up eventually cutting cables and soldering wires to finally get everything working. I changed then two gimbals.

My advice would be buy the one which you fly with. 9x on the other hand was easy.

Cheers
Asutosh

Post by: saikat on March 12, 2013, 07:54:22 AM
9xr mode change is fiddly and involved but not difficult.
I've done it without any hassles.

The gimbals are not full ball bearing i.e only one end of each axis
is supported by a ball bearing.

I'm using mine with a frsky JR module - works well enough.

I find the firmware weird and am planning to flash to the original
9x v2 firmware.

Otherwise - it an okay tx - but I find the 9x has a better feel.

I want to charge the lipo thru the charging jack - any suggestions
on how to do this ?

Please no dire warnings - I'm well aware of the  purported risks
involved.

I was planning to connect the balancer tap to the futaba training
port - and use a custom wiring harness , for charging and
balancing the battery while in  the tx.

Any flaws in the above ?

Post by: girishsarwal on March 12, 2013, 02:09:30 PM
@saikat, sounds perfectly ok if you can bring out the taps, cant say specifically on the the 9xr (dont have one) but for the 9x I've got a similar setup.  Rarely do I charge the battery outside the Tx, only when I have to physically inspect. The pos neg go to the 12v jack in the correct polarity and the taps go to the balancer port on the charger

didn't expect they'd make the mode change so convoluted.

PS: er9x is like arranged marriage. confusing at the start but then you start enjoying it ;) Don't know if that goes for love marriage too, mine was arranged ;)

Flashed with old 9x v2 firmware

how to get the backlight working ?

anybody ?

Title: Re: Turnigy 9XR- Review and flying with it on different modules
Post by: girishsarwal on March 14, 2013, 08:58:34 PM
saikat, the original firmware never had an option to control the backlight (in fact the hardware never had a backlight). Yes, when one would switch on the Tx, the backlight would come up. That was because the positive supply gets routed to the backlight.

Controlling the brightness/duration of the backlight via the er9x firmware also required small hardware mod (http://blog.pannuhuone.pro/p/turnigy-9x-backlight-mod.html) conecting the backlight to a free pin on the atmega. I might be incorrect but *I've a feeling* Turnigy has now included that as a standard feature in the new transmitter...so the older scheme of things might not work

Another simple possible way would be to route a wire from the +5v to the backlight +ve via a 220 ohm resistor, so when the tx is switched on, the backlight comes up; there will be no control of the brightness/duration via a software menu though. Route it thru a toggle switch, drill a hole and mount the switch

thanks girish - that will do nicely - in fact I will use one one of the existing switch positions - since
I do not plan to be flying any super complicated models

In the mixer settings, CH7 should be 100% (or whatever weight) and source should be P1/2/3 - whichever pot you wish to assign

Title: Re: Turnigy 9XR- Review and flying with it on different modules
Post by: girishsarwal on October 12, 2013, 05:57:30 PM
What would you want to do. Use it as a flip switch between 0 and 100% of servo signal? I dont have the radio in front but off the top of my head i think the following should work

two mixes to ch 6 as below

ch6 trn 100% full
        !trn 0% full replace

using the trn switch here for illustration
full is source. Might be max on your version of er9x
