When i thought of this i saw that there is no or very less mention of any events like sp4mm3rs and all those are places where talents blossom.  Drool
And also if it is a double thread plz remove it and if not they promote this one.  Grin
What i am thinking is is anyone participating in any sp4mm3rs and that too under which all events.
So why not gather info about various sp4mm3rs and host it here and let eligible people take part and have fun.
so to begin with i must say IIT-B  sp4mm3r one of those famous ones are over now.
also i found another one of VJTI mumbai [technovanza] link below:  Violent

http://www.technovanza.org/index.php/events/robotics-events/albatross  Smiley

as far as people here i think the above event might interest you don't forget to check other events on that page

waiting for inputs from others about other colleges.  Cool

i even saw some slum children doing hip-hop ofcourse  in their style   Giggle  near a speaker setup    Giggle

I am not posting my college's link since it's just internal affair ( and by far i hate internal affairs)

Human mind is like a parachute, works when open

hi,

this for your kind information. iit competitions are become a circus arena where only highly skilled acrobats can perform. Engineers who are supposed to design and compete are no where to be seen.

i myself have been to iit, kharagpur and iit, powai and witnessed the events there personally. personally speaking i am not happy the way iits are taking aeromodelling. this is the only sport where one has to put all his skills to work and it takes years of hardwork and dedication to be able to successfully fly a model airplane.

after seeing two events i am very much confirmed that many people think that flying a model airplane is easy task. one has to develop his orientation, judgement and reflexes. the knowledge of electronics , model engine and aeronautics is also equally important. all this takes time.

i have myself learnt the hard ways and after 20+ years of flying can surely tell you the difference in water and milk.

Comparing apples to apples, I do agree that unlike Comp Sc, Electrical, Civil engineering core competitions, places where there is no Aerospace Dept, there are huge chances of Students creating a mess with Aeromodeling. The problem is that Aeromodeling is indeed a long term hobby, like fine arts (Music/Painting etc). Usually the wisdom of students, who are themselves new to the hobby (or the part their curriculum dealing with RC), is many a times much less than many of the participants themselves. I can bet on IIT-KGP, where people like Chan would have not found a match among the organizers.

IIT-sp4mm3r is definitely one of THE Biggest event (my self attended it as Comp Sc student), but that is more due to finances involved and other larger departments.

None of the Aeromodeling competitions at any of the institute of the country can match all the aspect of competitions like Joe Nall and numerous such competition in EU.

All these competitions may hold some significance in fundamental and new research area, but may be not much for a casual/professional Aeromodeler.

Cuck it folks. Leave these competitions for young chaps and don't be misplaced.

Well now talking about IIT airplane competition, the main focus must be on the design, later flying & then a winner comes. But i see many participants in the events come with a Kit plane or a plane which has been built by someone else...

When i say engineering students means they have to design an airplane not to do Circus or to drop weight but to make it fly like an airplane first & later do the given task.

Talking about Joe Nall & events like TOC or F3A they all follow the FAI rule book. In India there are no such events or competition were pilots fly in that class.. Its not that we can't have this type of competition the problem is pilots are not willing to because they don't fly disciplined flying like precession aerobatics. Till this date i have not seen any aerobatic competition held in this country.

The QuadRotor can be of great use in the following areas..

1) Surveillance
2) Can perform complex maneuvers
3) Due to their ease of both construction and control, Quadrotor aircraft are frequently used as model aircraft projects.

{from http://www.technovanza.org/index.php/quadrotor}

i don't know if the part with italics is perfect for our favorite.

I was there in Technovanza[VJTI] in won the event fool's gold with my team.

but sources say that there was lot of partiality in the jury and mostly for big ticket events.   Angry  Shocked  Arguement
genuine potential winners were denied prizes and it was tilted into vjti's favour.  Tongue

Such thinks not only degrade the event on the whole but in the process of bring up the institution's name they end up spoiling it

Yes i agree, but what can be done is invite judges who are outsiders not related to the institute or the organisation at least 4 different judges will decide the winner. If you see big international or local competitions abroad you have judges from different states, country just for a reason to get a fair judgement & the give the best end result.

To put it straight a competition has to follow AMA rules..  why make your own rules?? have some discipline.

In almost every international competition - and this is not restricted to aeromodelling - there are usually five judges. The highest and lowest scores are disregarded, making it difficult to be "pro" or "anti" any individual.

And yes, the judges are people with adequate experience in their respective fields.

this for your kind information. iit competitions are become a circus arena where only highly skilled acrobats can perform. Engineers who are supposed to design and compete are no where to be seen.

I fully endorse this point of view  Technical institutes need to  encourage technical development and design and not flying.
But what happens  due to the fact that student organizers have limited knowledge of aero modeling  local aero modelers are approached to help  and then the event  gets transformed into a flying event  because that is what they know best .

On the contrary I was recently came across a  technical event in the US which is scheduled for march for UG technical students where the scoring pattern and the problem statement is entirely design oriented  and tests the ability of the plane to carry the max pay load as a percentage of its own AUW . The payload is increased progressively in every sorty  with the max reached  on the final. 50 % of the points are for  the technical presentation  and the rest for  achieving the  parameters laid down in the presentation and  pay load carrying.
Great Design competition  now comes the best part  the students do not fly the planes . They are flown by qualified AMA licensed volunteers .
I know a team going there from India .

This in my opinion should  be the format for a competition for technical students  as good designs  do not loose out on account  poor or non existent flying skills  and the student can concentrate on designing a great plane with the  full comfort that  his plane will be flown by an experienced person

Visit Amby Valley next fortnight. May leave a lot to be desired but a great beginning, nevertheless.

as sharlock pointed out about judges from outside it might just not work in india since i believe they are influenced by insiders only.

So the best method is a independent body of aeromodelling create a show judged by them but others taking part
is there anyone who second's my idea?

As of students building a plane going to the US agreed that 50 points are for the design but that design has to successfully fly means take off & land & later also carry the payload. Students think that building a plane is a easy task anyone can design a plane & fly it..
