Title: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: above the limt on February 15, 2011, 11:47:28 AM
About the organizers:

Rotor Hobby is one of the best hobby stores in India today. They are distributors for some of the leading names in the RC industry. The list includes ThunderTiger, Vario, Hitec, FG and many more. They now produce high quality and affordable Glow fuel under the ROTOROL brand name.

IRCRA is an association of RC racers who look forward to create an opportunity for all RC car enthusiasts and hobbyists to start up and continue to enjoy the hobby. The main aim of this association is to bring all RC car drivers together is committed to delivering quality information and support to its members.

About the event:

Rotor Hobby and IRCRA joins hands to present you a national level RC car race in Chennai. The race will be held at Rotor Hobby’s Mecca of RC Sports, RCPA Alpha 3 located 110kms off Chennai on NH-45 near Melmaruvathur.

Alpha 3 also houses a massive RC Aircraft and Helicopter runway, a one of its kind facility in India designed as per AMA standards. Alpha 3 has also planned a massive artificial lake for RC boats.

About the Track:

The Track dimensions are 140 feet in length and 80 feet in width. The layout consists of several challenging turns and fast straights. The track lane width is a constant 10 feet with some more wider turns. The 10 feet tall covered drivers stand has enough space for 10+ drivers. It is centrally located on the 140 feet straight.

A dedicated pitlane with pit platform is available. A dedicated pitlane will ensure that no pitting cars will obstruct the free movement of others on the straights. The track can accommodate 1/8 scale and 1/10 scale cars.

The obstacles like table tops, jumps, rumblers etc have been planned and will be implemented ASAP.

Alpha 3 has all facilities to conduct a National event. Several racers from across the nation are expected to participate. Rotor Sport and IRCRA look forward to your presence. Hope you will like the track and enjoy your day racing.

We will be posting more information and the full schedule shortly.

Nice layout.

Is it a clock-wise or anti-clockwise track?

Nice layout.

Is it a clock-wise or anti-clockwise track?

Anti-Clockwise with separate pit lane on the home stretch. Jumps & Rumblers will be up before the race. This is really tough track with tight corners. You will never be able to hit high speeds unless to take proper racing lines..

One newbie question... what is the ruling in a race if the car tumbles and ends up two lanes inside, in the direction it was supposed to go (thereby the driver getting an unfair advantage) ? :)

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: iamahuman on February 16, 2011, 02:42:29 PM
Usually,a marshal picks it up and puts it where its supposed to be.If it gets back up,the driver continues.I guess its not cared about in club racing but it might have some sort of penalty in sanctioned racing.

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: iamahuman on February 16, 2011, 02:43:49 PM
usually if a car tumbles,it stays upside down.If it goes right side up,the driver is lucky.

Also,if a driver is found to be cutting corners,he is penalized.

Normally, all drivers are decent enough to continue from where they made a mistake. In case of absence of Lap timers every car is assigned to a volunteer who will count the number of laps the driver does with out cutting corners. In lap timers, we will set minimum time (i.e. 5 sec minus the fastest lap) anyone coming below the minimum time that lap will be not be counted.

Anwar, its a big challenge. With no timing equipment, its even more difficult. All the races we see this happen. A car you lapped suddenly appears ahead of you becausing a cunning or ignorant pitman leaves the car on the starting grid. We are thinking of some process to ensure that the car is placed in the exact location where it stalled.

These things happen in a world race too. Ryan Maifield's car was marshalled and put in the reverse direction 2 times in the Amains.

Jump are gettting done as we speak.. Will upload more pics this weekend.. I'm so looking forward to this race as i will be defending my championship win..

This will be a very hard race if the track stays like this.Whoever is participating should get his tires right.

Well said Gandhar. The track is not this loose anymore.. The track has a very huge roller made of concrete, you need 5-6 people to pull it. The track will be rolled before the race..
Well tires will play a huge part of every driver's strategy.. You have choose inbetween too much grip and too less grip.. I have tried 4 different sets of tires already.. Finalized with one but still not too happy with it..

So thats not your premium racer right?

Good thing that the track will be rolled. If its not,its going to be a massacre out there >:D.If a buggy is having trouble handling that course(which I guess it is because you said that you had the wrong tires),others will have serious problems.Would be fun to see how others tackle this.

If I were to choose a tire for this track,I would go with one without a deep tread and medium compound.I guess wear will not be much of a problem seeing the surface.(but I ain't coming anyways  :( )

Lets hope you get the tires which you are happy with.An unhappy driver will not trust his car.You do have a month and 4 days to decide.lets hope you get it right and keep your winning streak up. ;D

Its not just your tires Gandhar.. The no. of teeth on pinion gear and spur  gear also matters, oil used in differentials, suspension oil, toe plate adjustment, EPA etc etc.. Winning is also based on proper pitting and perfect tunning for performance and mileage.. With current setup my fuel is lasting only for 4mins, hence im changing my engine to .21 from .28.. Planing to make a short loop for monster trucks.. Its very hard for them to drive on the this track.. Chennai team has lots of Buggies and truggies and hence the track was made this tight..

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: iamahuman on February 22, 2011, 01:28:10 PM
Well yeah.On the handling, the tires make one of the biggest changes.Diff oils surely do play a part. For the first time,I have seen a nitro guy talk about gearing.I am used to seeing electric guys go over gearing.A .28 size is 4.6 cc right?

I guess the races are for 7 minutes each.Electric guys don't have to worry much about this since I believe the races are usually 5 minutes each.A lipo can give consistent performance for upto 30 minutes(a 5000 mah one).So you still have some issues to sort out.Hope all of you guys get your best setups.

But there is one thing, its going to be hard for the buggies and truggies,it will be harder for the monster trucks.

For the first time,I have seen a nitro guy talk about gearing.I am used to seeing electric guys go over gearing.
Try changing your pinion gears up and see what happens. Same tech for nitro or electric. Lower the teeth, better the torque, lower the top speed and vice versa.

People think changing the engine or the motor, shifting to higher nitro % fuel or powerful batteries ONLY will make your car go faster....

Just like real cars, mods have to be done in stages, stage 1-3.

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: above the limt on February 23, 2011, 11:39:17 AM
I guess the races are for 7 minutes each.Electric guys don't have to worry much about this since I believe the races are usually 5 minutes each.

The race for each category is 30mins minimum. The monster truck will be getting a short loop done with couple of jumps..

I cannot afford an expensive engine hence i play with gearing in order to try & get the maximum out my engine so that i matches the top performers.

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: iamahuman on February 23, 2011, 01:44:58 PM
Well, knew about gearing, but never heard of gearing being changed by nitro guys.

But Murli, what would a guy who runs electric with one small battery(something like 4000 mah) do?Or how would an electric guy get on with a high draw setup that lasts for say,25 minutes?

@Ajo:I liked your comparison to stage 1,2 and 3 mods. Now I'm guessing lipo is at stage one and motors and ESCs are at stage 3.

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: above the limt on February 23, 2011, 04:15:11 PM
Gandhar: Im not into electric as of now but by next week i will be ;) For long lasting battery with a good power, advice i got for the same question is switch to lipo with minimum of 5000mah.. Ajo will give you a better answer for this..

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: iamahuman on February 23, 2011, 07:07:30 PM
Yeah but what will a guy with something less than 5000 mah do?

And which car are you getting?(You spoke of a Jammin SCRT.Is that the one?)

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: mail4ajo on February 23, 2011, 08:37:25 PM
Murali, I think electrics should be max 10-15 mins. People with lower capacity battery doesnt stand a chance. We need to be fair. Nitros can run 30mins.

Gandhar, I would say gearing, tyres etc at stage 1, higher lipos at stage 2 and motor, ESC at stage 3. Just my idea of modding.

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: iamahuman on February 23, 2011, 08:42:32 PM
Ajo,thanks for echoing my idea.I too would suggest 10-15 mins or even 10 mins to make it fair for all the electric users out there.

A question here,on a 30 min race, would 1 pit stop be enough to make it through the race?(with the tuning set slightly towards higher performance)

I agree with you Ajo, Electric race cannot be held for more than 10mins at max power..

Gandhar, In a nitro 30mins race..Tuning really matters, u have to run the engine longer and cooler which is hard. Number of pit stop varies from engine to engine.. Normally in a 30min race we would pit every 5mins..

What!!!!6 pit stops? Then the pit man must be really experienced quick.I thought nitros run upto 20 mins on one full tank.

No way Gandhar, Max tax capacity is 150ML. The well tuned engine will last maximum 7mins..

So pitting plays a huge part in strategy then.Do you just time every run in between pitstops or is there a visible change in the engine tone or performance?

Title: Re: Rotor Hobby and IRCRA brings you a National Level RC car race in Chennai
Post by: mail4ajo on February 25, 2011, 01:02:56 PM
Our RTR engines will last only about 7 to 8 mins. A high end performance engine will last about 10 mins depending on the track and state of tune.
