Hi,

I wish to buy an rc quad (UDI U818A) in Germany and bring it to India - Bangalore.
1. How do I carry it in the flight- as a carry on or checked in?
2. Will there be any issues at the Bangalore Customs?

Hi All,

I'm planning to bring a DJI Phantom 2 Vision plus to India. As you must be aware the Indian govt has banned all drones w.e.f. Oct 2014.

My question is, does the ban included the phantom too? If yes, how do I conceal/hide the phantom from customs at the airport?

Any suggestions, tips or advice, much appreciated. Thanks

1)Dont get a vision rather get a phantom 2 only and put a gopro on it
2)customs if u get caught your phantom will be seized and their can be action taken against you
3) at almost the same cost it is available in india why do need to import and take risk and be worried the whole time travelling ?
4)its customs not kids you cannot hide stuff from them they the authority to check anything anytime you cannot say no to them do t even think about hiding it

Thanks for prompt response chintal. Unfortunately its already been ordered, I got a good deal for $1300 including 2 extra batteries. Is it available in India for that price? If so, from where can one buy it.

Now that I already have it, I got to find a way of getting it back to India. How about I disassemble the unit and pass of the shell as a toy? The internal electronics/motors of the phantom can be easily tucked away in a plastic/bubble wrap.

Any other suggestions, Thanks a lot

If you're bringing it yourself, it should not be a problem. Just disassemble the frame as much as you can and put in in one suitcase and put the motors in the other bag (assuming you will be carrying 2 bags). Just make sure you don't keep all motors together, they get suspicious when the see a big lump of metal  Wink . The new airport is huge and they have only 2 'green channel' counters so the lines are often quiet long, especially if other flights land at around that time. In that case they don't even screen your checked in luggage.

Hope this helps.

Luggage. Should I bring it in my carry-on or checked-in luggage?
What do you think of the disassembling idea? I'm just worried about opening a new phantom and messing something inside by mistake but i'm running out of choices here.

Any other suggestions, Thanks

Checked in luggage. Disassemble it as much as you can. Keep it in the bag that contains no other electronic equipment. You should have no problems then.

Oh yes, very very helpful, Thanks a lot. I'm planning to bring the shell in my carry-on and pass it of as a toy. There are 3 batteries in total and I believe there are some airline restrictions on batteries but 1 per person in carry-on should be ok. We are 2 of us so that takes care of 2 batteries, I'm wondering what to do with the 3rd battery?

Opening a new unit still give me the jitters though. What if i mess up something inside and the phantom never flies?
So this is my last option.

What are the chances of it being discovered? How about if I try to pass the entire unit of as a toy? Have the customs started confiscating phantoms? Any idea on how seriously are the customs taking the P2's considering its a fairly new order, Thanks a million

In the worst case if you're asked to open your bags and they do find the phantom, then get ready to explain to them what it is. This according to me is the most difficult task :p (I once had to explain to them what a radio is Wink  ). Just stick to the fact that it is a toy and has very limited range. Whatever you do just stick to your explanation. If you don't have other valuable items, you should have no problems.

You can contact Reiner on this problem, he is a german citizen who currently is in delhi, He has DJI phantom and you can ask him how he managed to bring it in flight while he came India.

Now this guy is planning to sell his RC stuff here in India before return, so that some of as can get it with out any hassles.

His contact number is on his sale thread.

Thanks again. So are you suggesting I disassemble it or carry it as is? Which is better/safer in your opinion.

Disassemble it as much as you can but don't do anything you're not too comfortable with.

Fair enough. Any suggestions on whether to carry the transmitter(radio) in carry-on or checked-in? This can/should not be disassembled, I guess.

Carry the radio in a separate bag. If you are traveling with someone else, I would suggest that you give the radio to your companion. Also if possible proceed for custom check separately. Please do not disassemble your radio.

Thanks

Its customs u cant get away from them easily
It all depends on your luck
Dont ask people who have got them ask people who's products are stuck/seized at customs Then you will know from their experiences what reality about customs is
Just a advice its your call at the end
