No and Yes.

No - the scope in India just isn't enough unless you have a job funded by the N.C.C. as an 'Aeromodelling Instructor' and you are required to do a 'naam ka waaste' job. Other than that option, it is not enough to keep your home fires burning. I recently (a month ago) met an Aeromodelling Instructor who had absolutely no idea what Fixed pitch / CCPM was all about. He had heard about an ESC but had never seen one. he still lives in the 1970's.

Yes - Look at the Quizzing Guru Derek O'Brien. Apart from providing support to a political party, there is little else that he does (other than conduct Mega Quiz Competitions) to sustain his flamboyant lifestyle. AFAIK, He used to drive a Merc 13 years ago.

It is all about how you market yourself. Your Image, your Personality and your Knowledge. IMHO, that is the order of importance. I repeat, IMHO.

These views are my own and are not meant to denigrate any individual. All I want to say is that, project yourself well and success will come to you.

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

Well said !

There are couple of types of people here, who have aeromodelling as a big part of their day to day life.  I do not know them personally very well, but I will drag their names into this conversation with apologies in advance.

Sandeep Bajare seems to have a full time career in aeromodelling, as the resource person of Pune's main RC club/association.

Sanjeev Shah is an avid aeromodeller, who made RC his career (or a big part of it) by running RC Dhamaka, one of India's better RC stores.

There are other examples too.  The point being, there are few routes, but I am not sure these would lead to a "Merc owning" lifestyle very quickly (from what I understood).

I personally am aware of one such person, who aims to gross Rs.3.5 lakhs + in the month of Sept 2011 by conducting Aeromodelling classes at a single location in India.

That is great, and a good data point for this discussion !

Are all months like September ? Or does September still happen only once a year ?  I mean for this gentleman !

I am not aware of that, but scotch loosens tongues and he let this slip as the evening turned to night. I don't like to intrude or scratch beyond the surface. From what I could make out, September appeared only once in his annual calendar! Wink

However, @ Rs.29,167/- per month, it is not such a bad deal, if you have other avenues for sustenance lined up!  Grin

The 'Zero' down payment does not exist here in India and is not a realistic estimate. AFAIK.

Thanks anwar sir , v.c. sir and akky for ur responses...
so either become a hobby shop owner or trainer....
these are dealing with supplying the rc stuff in country , or
imparting training for flying  or construction of rc planes etc. No doubt , it is also an essential part of RC....
but aeromodelling is not limited to just selling or training....

To custom design planes , heli,s , engines, F.P.V etc. for specific purposes can also be good choice of career in India....
Till now, we are just copying or following the west or chinese manuf.. (actually, chinese manuf. are also copying the west)..
we just import there items and start using that....
If more to do , then we can modify there items , but only up to a extent....
but nothing like which we can say , Made in India which is new for whole the world....
As a result , we are very far behind in comparison to other countries in designing and developing of new things...
We all know that India is Origin country or mother of planes or flying objects....
Instead of Origin , we are importing UAV,s from other countries...
We also have some UAV but these are not compatible to western uav,s as they are followed not developed...
So , mere keep following or copying is solution??

Bow Sharma Models, Jodhpur – Original, ‘Made in India’ Diesel Engines.... Bow..  It’s now more than 4 decades they are in aeromoelling and their 3rd generation in on the floor to take the family baton ahead.  They are a well known brand in Europe and Australia and in NCC in India.  Apart from engines; they have high quality low cost and precisely designed propellers.

Be it Derek or Usha Uttuph they are great sellers of their own talent and rightly mentioned by VC shabh ‘Projecting’ their talent.... Hats Off

As far as career it’s a clear cut NO, but Entrepreneurship in aeromodelling ‘YES’ in India.   We don’t have corporate like HK in India who have well defined verticals for individuals to join them as employees. (Few days back I posted some career opportunities in HK on this forum but no one seems to be interested in those)

In nut shall if you want to Drive an earned Merc you have to be smart enough that’s all, it can be aeromodelling, Quizzing or singing... Thumbs Up

Edit: We dont have corporate doesent mean we will not be having, so I am hopeful for a better tomorrow. :-)

That,s the point....
By just little modification of things or production in our country, we can not be the inventor ....
Diesel Engines are in this world from the time of Rudolf Diesel.....
and same history for propellers....
correct me if i am wrong..

Aeromodelling per say in the current scenario is still largely only a Hobby in India. To pursue as an  independent career will require huge effort, dynamism and huge coverage to break even from whom ever is attempting it.

As a part of business which support Aero modelling Hobby in terms of training, supplying parts cannot be called as an career in aeromodelling but it is still largely like any other business.

However designing and manufacturing models and parts can still be called a career in aero modelling which is still in nascent stage, can grow only after the Hobby as such is recognized and has wide footprint in India.

However the future of the higher faculty and branches, what you can graduate into by pursuing aero modelling as a hobby like aerial photography, Survey, mapping, surveillance, security, Media coverage, certified UAV pilots is definitely huge in near future both in India and abroad.   Thumbs Up

My dear friend Aditya (Chankya's photograph in ur profile looks great) Well as far as inventions are concerned, they happen in responce to Needs and amazingly most of the inventions were 'serendipity'.

Engines, propellers, aeroplanes, radios bulbs etc were not invented in India because our forefather and we have different priorities in their our or lives. You see Chankya (I guess your idol)....invented 'Arthshastra'.....it was his priority. Aryyabhaat invented Zero...it was his priority.

I may be very generic in saying this but Indian's priority is more towards intellectual inventions than physical inventions.

I saw in somewhere in newspaper that India bought some UAV's from USA. I  felt bad about this . what is the need of importing them ? We have all the technical knowledge and also human resource. The main reason because of these is 'Brain Drain'.Govt. of India gives so much sub-cede but we are forgetting our duty.I am sure there are many people (in RCINDIA or other) who will be happy to serve India.

I've decided that i will never go for job abroad.

I am not sure whether Aeromodelling option is good choice for career or not. But one thing I must tell you that one of my friend got a decent opportunity in that field back in 2014, in Assam . There are certain Jobs in Assam where this kind of specialization is important. So , I would suggest you to search jobs in Ne states because the competition is very less in that part.
