Title: Elliptical wing configuration
Post by: Rajath1995 on October 08, 2016, 07:32:39 AM
Hello guys , i am looking to make a plane for a competition with my team. We require high lift and have thrust to weight ratios of 0.2-.4 .Hence we are looking at a high lift cambered airfoil with high Cl-Cd.For the wing configuration , we are looking at elliptical as it has least induced drag but i wanted to know what are the tail-wing configurations. Because i'v seen RC's having only similar tail profiles as the wing.Also , we are looking at high wing , how does that factor in the elleiptical design criteria?
I am a beginner and any and all inputs will be helpful.Thank you.

@rajath1995,
Noticed that this is your first post.
Welcome to the forum.

You mentioned only one criterion - thrust to weight ratio of 0.2-0.4.
If this is the only requirement, no research is needed.
Almost ALL trainer/powered glider models can easily meet this standard!

Maybe there are other rules in your competition.
Perhaps you could list them.

BTW, there are many, many issues to be considered before you worry about the shape of the tailplane!
Or even that of the wing.

Since you mentioned that you are a beginner and welcome all inputs, i hope you will not mind the following questions/ suggestion...

1. Does your team have a member with some experience of building/ flying an RC model?
2. Do you have any electric or glow powered model to experiment with?

If Yes to both, here is a suggestion:
a. Add lead weights (or Plasticine) as close as possible to the CG of your model.
b. Increase gradually to find the max all up weight that can be safely and reliably flown and landed
c. Measure the thrust (more accurately the pull)
d. See if it meets your thrust to weight reqmt.

Best of luck.
Regards.

Hello sir , I would also like to know more about this , and would welcome your inputs .There are many other criterion but i would lik to make those private since we would be talking about our college model design and i wouyldn't want them to be public. A personal friend of mine , Devanesan , and a member of this community mentioned you as a person to approach .i tried to PM you but i'm not allowed on this forum. If there's any other way to reach you , it'd be appreciated.

@rajath1995

You asked for help, and it was offered unconditionally.
With the clarification that i am an amateur.

Now you say you cant consult a professional?

I am sure you understood that any outsiders help cannot be taken directly into the design for this competition sir.I had asked for inputs on various parameters of an RC plane to help my understanding of the plane to help out my team. I hope this clears the misunderstanding of what the term "professional"  meant. I appreciate the unconditional help,  always. Thank you for your time and your interest sir.
