Well.... tried going for flying for the last a month and more. Its been just too hot to be standing outside here in Allahabad. About 6 weeks ago had gone to fly my Kaiser Mk II. While doing the regular aeros..... lost control all of a sudden and the model just started o fall out of the sky.... Had no response from the throttle..... As the model was falling from some height... had a bit of time and as the speed built up... regained control on the model to make it a dead stick landing. The landing was rough and heavy.... broke the undercarriage.
On retrieving the model the propeller appeared to be jammed and not moving.... the motor was extremely hot...... Soon realised that the motor was burned.
Well..... the inquiry into the crash reveled the following:-
1. The Crash occurred dur to the motor getting jammed at the crucial place in the aerobatic maneuver resulting into loss of control.
2. It was a stroke of luck as the control was regained during the fall and a dead stick landing was carried out... though with some damage to the model.
3. Reason for the motor burning.... I was using a 2 in spinner on the motor and that caused the airflow around the nose of the model to deflect from the nose and make the entire shape more streamlined. This disrupted the airflow over the motor causing loss of cooling on the motor. As I pumped the motor for the aeros.... the motor could not be cooled and it ultimately burned.
The model was repaired in the coming week with reinforcements given in the nose and the attachment to the landing gear. The kaiser Mk II is all painted and ready for flying again.
Luckily only the motor was lost and the ESC etc are functional. The same set with a new motor is fitted back on the model now.
Moral of the story..... Friends if you are using a spinner and wanting to fly in this summer heat. Avoid doing so. Take off the spinner and fly.... allow the motor to cool as you fly.
Happy Landings
