But with base model coting $8495.00 USD, I think I would DIY some day instead!!

They are not the best in the market by a long way!! If you want to make your own, try http://www.diydrones.com and coming soon a new autopilot http://www.openpilot.org.

Well you might have soon, most new radios are coming with telemetry as standard, they will be pricey to start with but the price will come down.
