Nairit, do you have any idea of the price of tomatoes today? Someone like me can scarcely afford them, I haven't seen one in months  Cry - you think anyone would waste money by pelting you with them? Now, come to think of it, perhaps rotten eggs are a better idea.............. ROFL

@Nithinraj: What was the total cost of the item with shipping? Did you ordered through ems or reg. shipping?

For the previous order I too paid at the post office but didn't got the receipt!

k...
Here is a recent experience of me having dealt with customs of kochi foreign post office.
I bought an fpv kit from ebay last month which arrived in mumbai on the 20th.On the beginning of this month i received a letter from FPO asking for documents relevant to the purchase like invoice, use of the item, payment particular etc.As soon i received this, i personally went to the office to give a copy of the invoice. When i got home i received a call from them saying the invoice was vague. One thing i noticed while visiting their office and talking on the phone was that they were really pleasant people. Then i sent the documents through courier. And today i got a call and they asked me to issue a DD for 800 rupees in favor of the commissioner of customs and pay a duty of 945 rupees when the postman delivers it.

I need to know the authenticity of this, they told me that the 800 bucks is for the fine they slapped me for importing electronic goods worth above 2000rs.And the rest as duty.Btw i declared a low value like 2250.Is it true that we can't bring electronic goods worth above 2k?
On the whole i am happy that my fpv "1.2ghz" tx and rx got through customs without much scrutiny  Grin

muradshak  : even i have faced same problem with customs. When i ordered Turnigy 9X from HobbyKing  i didn't received any letter from FPO for quite times then i only called them up and asked about procedure and the next day i got letter from FPO asking for documents.then i made acknowledgement letter and attached invoice copy and sent to FPO Bangalore. After 3 days i got letter from local post office to pay Rs.499 custom duty for my parcel. Bang Head i have declared only $18 in the package. Bang Head but finally i got the Radio  Smiley

@tej Rs.4,258+499= 4757(registered airmail )

I saw this post on a blog few days back regarding customs etc:
http://foreignpostmumbai.blogspot.in/2013/05/detention-of-post-parcel-by-customs-in.html

The info given here is same as sent to tej in by the customs.

A related FB profile: http://www.facebook.com/foreignpostofficemumbai/info

I wonder why did Tej not get a receipt. As nairitb pointed out "You get a RECEIPT even if you pay 1INR to the govt."

Fedex or DHL gives you custom duty invoice and bill of entry. Where in they mention the custom duty calculation and there clearance charges.

is it ems or registered parcel. Both parcel will be delivered to you from post office. The post man will collect the duty from you. He will bring some hand written duty calculation slip stamped by foreign post office.

Hi Aman. You get Customs Invoice from FedEx and other courier companies. You HAVE TO ask for it. I asked for it and I got it. Then I made the payment.

Their system is the most transparent. You dont get any letter from Customs Office because there is no Customs Officers involved in the parcel scrutiny. Courier companies have IN-HOUSE customs clearance sections and their OWN people calculate and pay the customs on your behalf. Then they collect the money from you and charge a little extra commission (300INR for FedEx).

well that cost was 19 $ thats equal to 1150 approx as per 60.532 something per dollar And i was charged 26.51 % customs that is equal to 305 rs so total 1150 + 305 = 1455 rs only This the total charge i paid. Smiley

Following from here: http://www.rcindia.org/rc-outlets-and-resellers/anything-and-everything-hobby-king/msg161141/#msg161141

Here is the custom detail.

What was in there?

LiPoly, Radio and receiver, LiPoly Charger.
Weight: 2.x Kg.

Who shipped

FedEx Priority. Very expensive, but no headache.

Custom

Custom was pretty nominal. 28.85%. What really sucks is the fact that it is calculated with Shipping Included. I remember a thread where a guy was selling something and saying he had to pay 50% of it. It could be something like this. Your stuffs costed $100, your shipping costed $70. You paid 30% of $170, which is $51. And you feel like you paid 50% at custom. Anyway, sorry for the diversion.

So, stuffs + shipping = $150. Custom converted it to Rs.9772. Here is what I paid:

Assessable Value (AV): 9772
Basic Custom Duty (BCD) @10%: 977
Countervailing Duty aka Additional Custom Duty (CVD) @ 12% of (AV+BCD): 1290
CESS @0%: 0
Educational Cess (EC) @3% of CVD + 3% of (BCD + CVD + CESS on CVD): 68
Special Additional Duty (SAD) @ 4% of (AV + BCD + CVD + EC): 484
Others @0%: 0
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL CUSTOM DUTY: Rs. 2819
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extra charges from FedEx:

Other Charges: 300
Service Tax: 37
-------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL RoD: Rs. 3156
-------------------------------------------------------

RoD => Reimburse on Delivery same as CoD except it means differently.

Lessons learnt

1. Look into LHS, they may cost cheaper. I do not find any LHS that is as comprehensive as HK. Which kind of sucks. Why no frigging person starts a company that floors HobbyKing and AdaFruit.  Thumbs Down

2. Tweak custom statement, if you can.

3. FedEx costs a lot more, but it is a peace of mind you buy for that. You do not have to run to custom officer pleading ownership in rightful mind. Government organizations scare the hell out of me.

4. Splitting shipment between AirMail and FedEx -- may be more expensive. So, do that maths right.

Hope this help some poor soul and probably helps resolve dispute. Attached is a low resolution copy of the custom statement.

Admins,

Please increase the size quota. It is very constrained. 200KB for image? So, 2004! You made me open Gimp.

I am not admin but being programmer i know that size & cost directly related.

So, if we want to increase the size of attachment then the cost will also increase.

Indirectly you are requesting Anwar to spend 5 times more on space requirement.

If you really need to post something HD then you should use some other sever and provide the link here.

Atul

Good job except the fact that the storage cost / GB has dropped massively since 2004. I am pretty sure Anwar / Systalent can be a little bit more generous. But you are every bit right. It is 5x costly than what it is currently. Plus, there is always imgur. Smiley

Sorry for the diversion. Lets kill this discussion here, and not hijack the thread.

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/forum-usage-tips/msg212/#msg212 (see #1).

Basically, it is inconvenient to members once, but I have to ensure these live forever (so to say). With multiple backups etc, the costs add up quickly, for something that has significant value only in the short term (roughly 24 hours after a post is made).

Google and others give people the false impression that storage is cheap, while reality is far far away from it.
