I just ordered a epo foam frame from aliexpress , the seller is asking me what amount I want him to declare to my customs officer, should I tell him to declare the original amount 112$ with shipping or should I tell him to give a lesser amount, it is only a foam frame no elcetronics

Thank you in advance

Tell him to quote 50/60 dollars. That would be OK and even if customs is charged then it would be less than Rs. 1000.

I recently got my RC CAR from hobbyking and the price declared was $51 and customs duty charged to me was Rs. 720. But make sure that you don't quote too low price which would raise questions in custom dept. They are smart enough and come across such parcels everyday.

Thanks
Manish

Customs classification is a tricky business. If they accept the declaration as toys or parts of toys and there is no RC items involved, aggregate duty will be around 30% (actually 29.441%) of your CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight/Postal charges).

Cost is the actual price you paid, converted to the Indian currency based on exchange rate on the date of import into India
Insurance is applicable for insured parcels. Otherwise its not taken into account. If actual rate of insurance is given then that is added. Otherwise its taken as 1.125% of cost.
Freight or in this case the actual postal charge is added. If actual postal charge can't be derived, 30% of cost is assumed as postal charge

Then add 1% of CIF with CIF. This is called "Assessable Value" (AV)

Now calculate 30% duty on AV. That's your customs duty.

Weight does not matter. However generally customs pay more attention to packages which are big and have more weight. So they are more likely to accept the declared value of a small package with less weight but will suspect undervaluation in case of big packages or heavy ones. In many foreign post offices they have x-ray machines too.

That's why some Chinese sites also split your order if there are multiple items.

------------------------------

As for your question on undervaluation, this is a question nobody can answer. If you get away by declaring low value then you are lucky. If you get caught, then that is your problem and they may impose fine and/or penalty and demand extra duty too.

If customs suspects undervaluation and calls you by issuing a calling memo, they might ask you to show proof of the actual payment made online. So you may have to produce printout of your invoice and maybe passbook statement or credit card statement. In that case you will be in dire straits because such documents will reveal your actual payment.

Its hard to predict anything. Anyway, dismantle the propellers and battery and other attachments like stand etc. and bring it in your checked in baggage without its cardboard box. If asked, tell that its a toy and gift for children in your house. Otherwise, you don't need to declare it specifically since you have free allowance of Rs.45000. If you don't have other dutiable items, opt for the green channel.

It isn't normal for sure. I order a lot of stuff via EMS and the tracking is more or less accurate and updated. It had never taken so many days for the status to update like your case. Please call the office and check.
