Title: A new board break up for RC India
Post by: anwar on April 15, 2011, 10:15:24 AM
Wish Anwar creates a separate FPV/AutoPilot Section and move the thread there, or at least makes this one as a sticky.

We are growing fast in terms of number of posts and topics, and so far I have been fighting the requests (and temptation) to add more categories/boards.

So I am requesting proposals on how to split up the boards further.

I believe that the "General Topics" and "RC Baazar" areas are pretty much fine (except for moving out the "RC Maneuvers and Skills" board out into something that is related to airplanes/helis/cars themselves).  Seems like Airplanes needs a dedicated section instead of just being under the broad section of "RC Models", with dedicated boards for "Scratch, Kit and Plan builds", "ARFs and RTFs" etc.

We should not have too many boards for small small differences either.

Proposals are invited :)

Basically "RC Models" is where the big surgery needs to happen.  Even "RC Equipments" seems to be OK.

Jet Engines and Jet Airplanes a separate section, if possible, Basic Jet Funda starting from Brayton Cycle and other stuff specific to RC Jets are waiting to get in.

For cars, you could split it into Off-Road and On-Road.. Maybe a separate Board for build logs?   8-)

Decisions !

Wouldn't it be better to have electric versus fuel split, than on-road versus off-road ?  Otherwise we will end up with 4, considering all possibilities.

Similar questions remain on airplanes and helis too.

Yes, we should have Electric vs Fuel.. But then, there will be 3 categories..
Elecrtic
Nitro
Gas

And considering the no. of plane people here, shouldn't we have more boards for planes and helis? Like Giant scale, Trainers, etc.. Not much of a plane guy  :giggle:
But inside of these sections, will there be more splits?
e.g - Trainers -->- Electric
                        - Gas
                        - Glow

Yes, we should have Electric vs Fuel.. But then, there will be 3 categories..
Elecrtic
Nitro
Gas

That is too many for cars...  6 permutations (3 fuel types x onroad/offroad).

Similarly, we will have to make a meaningful number of boards for airplanes and others too.

We can leave on-road and off-road..
Only need 3 categories - Electric, Nitro, Gas.

For the cars, instead of manoeuvres and skills, how about setup and tuning information(help)?

May be all all of them (airplanes, heli, cars) need a "General Topics" board, which such matters can be discussed.

hi folks,

id like to make a suggestion. inside the fueled rc car section, we could have nitro and gassers. this is because, gassers are generally 1/5th scale and parts and knowhow differs a lot in these 2 cases.

cheers.

Free flight, RC :headscratch:

Sub Sub category :headscratch: Nav will become easy, Also one section on Engines and Motors as Powerplant is independent of the model

Example

* Airplanes

*** Kit and Plan Builds - Fuel Powered
****Jet Powered

*PowerPlant

***Glow Powered
***Gas Powered
***Jet Engine
***Electric Motors

Free flight, RC :headscratch:

Free flight is already one of the boards under Airplanes :

Or did I miss the point ? :)

Sub-sub categorization takes away the visibility, that is why you seldom see them in the big forums.

??? about power plant

Kit and Plan Builds - Fuel Powered
Scratch and SPAD Builds - Fuel Powered
the above two has some redundancy.  being  'gray' can be argued both ways.

Power plants alone already comes under separate discussion in "RC Equipments", just like we have now.

I thought pure scratch building was worth recognition, and any SPAD build is a close cousin.

Not to diss anyone, but building from plans or kits feel just like assembling a heli from parts (with the extra step being only the initial cutting up of foam or balsa).

Or may be we should have "Scratch, plan and SPADs" in one bucket, and "Kit, ARF and RTF" in another ?  So we have 2 boards instead of 3.

BTW, I am fully open to suggestions, please do keep them coming.  Just trying to figure out where to draw the lines :(

Just a question - you have listed a 'kit, plan build' and a 'scratch spad build'. Wouldn't a plan build be a scratch build as well?

Could we have a entry under multiple tags? Suppose one is writing a review of a Edge540 from xxx, it could be under 'ARF/RTF' as well as under 'Review'

multiple tags is good idea.

I almost got killed by Capt Manish for not differentiating between these ;D

We don't have the concept of "tags" at all :(  You are right, there are many things that may fall into multiple buckets, but the best we can do right now is to list those keywords in the topic heading/name itself !

Well going for that definition of scratch build, I am not sure how many of us are actually attempting a pure 'scratch' build. So it would be interesting to see how many posts it actually attracts. :)

I am sure there are some from time to time... the backpack-able glider would be a recent example.

So it looks like the proposed break up would be pretty much OK.  I am going to add new boards soon, and we will them move on to the massive task of reclassifying the existing stuff (with the help of the moderators ;) ).

hi guys.
that sounds great...........
so it would be .............
build from plans
build from kit... [ARF...RTF]
scratch build........... self design [ with a 'type' as a guide ] ie see picture of 'destroyer' and draw your own plans and then build .....from what?....not purchase a ready made hull etc ?..

regards
don

I am going to implement the board break up as suggested earlier in this thread :

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/a-new-board-break-up-for-rc-india/msg57957/#msg57957

Any final comments ? If not I will make this change in the next couple of days.

PS: We will need help from moderators with free time to help move threads around after the new boards are created :)

Anwar Bhai

Jets & Quads, ? (Now that most LHS carry Quads in a separate section, it kinda deserves it)
also while we are at it, could you let some search function for the thread to merge (Presently there is a requirement to go through every page)

Title: Re: A new board break up for RC India
Post by: anwar on October 13, 2012, 09:08:54 PM
Quads would have a separate section, just like now called "Multirotors".

Jets... hmm.  I thought of dumping them along with all the fuel powered planes, may be we will make a separate board for them.
