I have to open up a thread to get to the buttons to post a reply or to start a new thread. Is there an option to start a new thread directly from the home screen?

I am not sure I understood the question.

To start a new thread:  From the main screen, choose the "forum" in which you want to post (like "Chatter Zone", "Beginner Zone" etc).  Once inside that particular forum, you get the "New Topic" button on the top right.  Putting a "New Topic" button on the main screen would require that you also are forced to choose a forum to place your new topic in, from a drop-down list or something; which is somewhat similar to clicking and opening up a particular forum to post in.

To reply to an existing thread:  You have to be in the thread anyways to reply.  Getting to the last post in the thread is made easy in couple of ways... 1) The "Recent Topics" list on the main screen is setup so that when you click on the topic name, it takes to the last post in the topic  and 2) When you open any forum, there is an arrow towards the extreme right of any thread/topic, which will take you to the last post in that thread/topic.

If you want to reply to particular threads easily, the trick I use is to enable "Notify" on most/all of the forums.  This causes new posts to be emailed to me, with a link to reply to that thread.

Hmm..... actually more of a feature that I was looking for.

Say the home page has "start new thread", it should then open up the form with a combo box or some mechanism of selecting the board that we want to publish the post, but then I guess, its not someting that is essential.

You have to pick a board/forum to place the thread/topic in anyways, just do it from main screen  8-)
