I see that "Search" being just an option in the main menu is a bit hard to notice, and a "Search Box" would make it more visible.  I will try to add it as time permits.  Thank you for taking the time to suggest this

I do have one suggestion though  >:D  Please take a moment to put a meaningful "subject" on each new thread/topic you are starting; and try to put it in the appropriate board.  For example, this topic itself, was just "suggestions", it would have made more sense to put it as "Suggestions for the forum" (removing any ambiguity as to whether it is a suggestion about a model or flying or the site itself).  Also, using capital letters for the the first word of a topic also makes it looks nice (even though that is more of a "nice to have").  I have updated the topic subject for this one, and moved it to the "RC India Forum" board.

That is available already. If you click on the "Profile" option (you should see it below the main menu when you are logged in), then choose the "Personal Message Options" from the left side, you can see a check-box which says "Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default".  Just enable that, and you will have every message you sent out saved in your Outbox by default.

Answered here : http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/forum-usage-tips/msg2336/#msg2336

In short, those nasty people who own this forum do not seem to want to bear the cost of people like you and me being lazy about resizing the images  :giggle:

On a serious note, most pictures have too much resolution, which can be reduced quite a bit without losing clarity/information.  Why take up server space (which is a costly commodity) indefinitely for something that adds NO value ?

BTW, your suggestions are sincerely appreciated   Please keep them coming.....

Good point, I had not considered those.

Since we do not have the ability to control attachment sizes by file type (and writing the code required is a matter of free time), and increasing the limit would cause more common attachments like images to uploaded with "extra" resolution, the simplest solution is for you email such  attachments (which are relatively rare) to the address on the footer of any page here, and we will help you attach them to your post.

Just hit "Quote" and then remove the parts you do not want (select the text you want to remove like you do in any document, and hit "delete").

Anwar, can we have a facility to quote multiple posts? Sometimes, I want to respond to multiple posts in one reply.

This is another useful one, but currently not supported by the forum software.  Again, we can write a "mod" to handle this, but it is a question of having a big enough need to warrant the time/resources.  It is fairly uncommon to have this need.

If I wanted to do quote on say three different posts in a single reply, what I do is to "right click" on the Quote button for the first two, and choose "Open in a new window" (which is supported by all the browsers).  Finally I left click (normal click) quote on the 3rd one.  After replying to the third one on the original window, I cut and paste the "quoted text" from the other two windows into the third one and put in responses under each. Not very elegant, but works for the rare times when one feels the need.

I realize now that "quoting multiple earlier posts" in a reply is possible, if you use the "Quick Reply" box/option (instead of the regular "Reply" option.

While in the "Quick Reply" box, just click on the "Quote" button for various posts you want to quote from (at least the ones on the same page), and they will all show up in the reply that you are composing !

IM/chat functionality was discussed before.  But that would take away from discussing many matters of interest on the forum (which makes it permanent), so I decided not to enable that option.

Some times the ad-line below the navigation bar wraps to two lines. This causes the page below it to jump up and down. Can you do something about this?

Can you post a screen-shot ?  The issue is not clear from the above description alone.

Strange!! Have you already set it right?
My LCD screen at home is wider but when I browsed earlier in another older CRT model, the animated line with green text ..."win a reflex simulator etc" kept wrapping to two lines when longer text "free ads for all..." came in.
Anyway, never mind. :headscratch:

It seems to go away if text size is reduced in the browser menu.
I have the screenshots.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on April 07, 2010, 07:59:49 PM
These are CSS (cascading style-sheet) issues, and are sometime browser dependent.  Let me see if I can fix them, time permitting.  I can always cheat by reducing the length of the main menu, but that is not the right fix.

Thank you for bringing it my attention.  I never see it as I run my machines at higher resolutions.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: ankur on April 07, 2010, 08:06:46 PM
i think defygravity is using at a much lower resolution-800*600
i have problem with only menu bar which can be easily removed if u remove any of the entities..
i think either recent posts or recent topics-since they are nearly the same 1 can be moved to quick links to solve this problem....

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: defygravity on April 07, 2010, 09:40:28 PM
@Ankur, the screenshots I posted are at 1024x768 resolution.

I have verified that this effect is related to text size. It comes up even at resolution 1280x1024 which is what I am using for this post. (This is Ubuntu linux with Firefox 3.0 browser) Reducing the text size in the browser menu removes this problem.

I experienced this problem earlier today in a WinXP machine with FF and also with IE6 ( ;D )

You want to see this in action, just increase text size in your browser so that all the characters are bigger, and wait for the animation to run through one or two cycles. You can see the bottom part of your window bob up and down rhythmically!!

When I use my laptop(because it has wide LCD) this never happens but i experience it when I surf the net from my school or cyber cafe both use old type of monitors(the once like the big boxes).

kartik-the one u r talking of are crt monitors and they have the problem..and now it is ok @ 1024*768 res. i can't go higher  or lower than this
what can one do when he when buying a comp. got a crt monitor and he waited for it  to finish its life but these extra durables just don't want to get off the computer table  to make space for a brand new lcd monition....................................untill the persons put a magnet underneath it to get it off >:D >:D >:D >:D

Moved the "Help" and "My Bookmarks" menu items into the "Quick Links" drop down menu.

Hate to bother you with my persistent hair-splitting but there is still a little something here!! let me try to explain a little better.
It is about the animated text bar that displays the following text:

"The RC India Gems  |  Free ads for all Indian RC shops/outlets/resellers  |  Win a Reflex simulator"

Now, as the bar animates, the displayed text changes. In fact there are 3 different contents displayed in sequence. Of these three, two need just one line each to display, whereas the third needs two lines. This makes the bar temporarily wider during the animation sequence. The screenshots should explain that. This pushes the lower portion of the page down periodically.
I realise this is a minor issue and you would have more important matters to attend to in this forum, but I just wanted to clarify the technicalities. Another reason I mentioned this is that it is not resolution dependent but related to browser preferences. So just in case...
Thanks for your time  :)

I see that "Search" being just an option in the main menu is a bit hard to notice, and a "Search Box" would make it more visible.  I will try to add it as time permits.  Thank you for taking the time to suggest this.

Rigged up a "Search Box" on the top right of any page the forum.  Many people suggested that the "Search" menu item in the main menu is a bit hard to notice :)

hi anwar ji,

I want the search function to work on the sub forums like 'Heli' or 'Plane'

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on June 01, 2010, 10:51:29 PM
That is easy ;)

Use advanced search (the "lens" icon on the left of the new search box, or you can choose it from menu also).  Then expand the "Choose a board to search in, or search all" link, and it will allow you to choose the boards you want to search in.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: rajathv8 on June 08, 2010, 12:44:33 AM

why dont we have a separate reviews section on the forum? cars, planes and equipment. Instead of just takling about specs and stuff members can post about advantages,, disadvantages, problems, purchase details,if they have any second thoughts after purchase, spares availability, delicate parts to whtch out for etc...

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on June 08, 2010, 12:57:12 AM
They can do it in the appropriate boards now itself, just clarify that it is a "Review" topic by mentioning that word in the title itself.  Like this review of a heli :

http://www.rcindia.org/helis/review-hk-450-pro-tt-torque-tube-version/

It makes sense to split content into more boards as needed, but in this case we will need a "Heli review" board, a "Plane review" board, a "Tools & Parts review" board etc, to do justice. I am not in favor of exploding the number of boards that way ;)

BTW, this is just what I feel on the subject... I do sincerely appreciate your suggestion, and do keep them coming !

hey anwar bhaiya just a couple of suggestion that might make the forum look a but more fun attractive and much more.

the forum itself is very good but just a few suggestions

1. i was wondering the white space on both the left side and right side of the page that is left empty. we could have a theme that would be like the base coat on which the whole forum main page sits on just like in the picture i have made orange rectangles just to show the areas.

i could be a weather based theme or festival based theme like now monsoons are approaching so we could have a monsoon theme or any static monthly theme or a theme for a few months and then the next

2. is that we could have the sidebar navigation which would have the latest news, cool threads and articles and new products that have been launched here (yes inspired by rcg)(could be implemented when we have more articles)(we could also have a weather bug somewhere there

just my suggestion as it is the website looks cool enough and i  know its easy for me to just say change this and do that but you do have a job so whenever you get time just would love if you gave a thought to it

subbu

this forum rocks

Will keep them coming :salute:

i hardly see any reviews on rc cars  :(

If its possible, can the post content be mentioned on the email notification send to us when we are tracking a board? Similar to the PMs. So that I can chose to log on to the site or not based on the content posted.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on June 08, 2010, 07:57:31 PM
I purposefully disabled that feature... I am guilty of vested interest on that one :(  If everyone chose notifications and notifications have all the details, that would render the forum even more inactive. Hopefully it is not too much trouble for people to log in and check the latest posts (or boards that are of interest to them) once a day at least !

Please allow more than 4 photos to be uploaded at once. If a person is willing to upload more than 20 photos, he will do it! Why force him to break it up in 4s?

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on June 08, 2010, 11:12:51 PM
Why force him to break it up in 4s?

"Human nature" is one answer :giggle:

1.  Forcing to split the photos into groups of four causes the person to split the photos into logical groups.  For example, if I am posting various photos of a build, forcing him to post in groups will subconsciously prompt him to put descriptions/details of each group (for example, he will post the details like "These photos show the tail assembly... note that I used the farthest hole on the servo arm to get maximum throw"!), which he would otherwise not have mentioned ;)

2.  We want to discourage people from posting too many pictures of the same thing from the same angle (photos that are too similar).  There is a cost for storing attachments on the hosting server !

And there is another technical reason.

3.  HTTP uploads ("POST" commands) tend to timeout if there are many attachments and the upload runs for a long time.  This would cause users to get frustrated.

Dear All,

I may sound a little (or a lot) old fashioned as I say this, but can we PLEASE leave the forum JUST the way it is, for now? It is user friendly, fast loading and I guess, the majority of us are happy with JUST THE WAY IT IS. It is a friendly, very personal space to visit.

We are more than a thousand strong, and I guess, we are very happy with the way the things are. No alterations, improvements or changes required at the moment. Change is inevitable, I know, it will come when it is inevitable. IMHO that time hasn't come as yet. I reiterate, IMHO.

Thanks Administrator Sir, for a wonderful job truly well done. I feel, I am not qualified enough to suggest any improvements (especially when they are redundant).

Let it be.

It will be more helpful if you can provide RCGroups like upload manager. That uploads one by one in a separate window. I have always had timeout problems when I upload pics from my 10 MP camera as the files were big, though the 4MP camera files upload like a charm. I then had to resize the 10 MP photos and then upload. An upload manager would be helpful :) reduces resizing on my end and I can leave that for the server to do (You know more user friendly  ;) )

BTW I still have seen people uploading the same pics in same angle multiple times even with the "4 quota" w/o description. "Human Nature" as it is called  ;D

i somewhat disagree with that

i have been with this website from the very beginning and just thought that the empty space could be utilized and that it would be more flexible and easier to find new articles and all other things anyways it was just a suggestion not an order

so its all up to anwar bhaiya and i love the forum the way it is

These are not orderss, just suggestions and  I love them all :)  So please keep them coming.

Both my opinion and amount of time I can spend on each influences the final outcome, but that is not the point.  All suggestions are welcome suggestions !

On the white-space/side-bar issue pointed out by Subbu, not every one has high resolution screens. This particular design template asks for some white space on the sides.  I can (and probably should) reduce it, but there is not enough to support side-bars.

Anwar, did you make the RC India Logo yourself ? I know hardly many techies who have a good hand is drawing etc, so it could have been a tasking job for you!!

How about  a makeover of the Color of the Forum (Tri color is good but the bright orange color attracts the eyes of the passer byes in the office, apart from striking ones eyes too.

And when we have members like Merog (hope I spelled correct) who are doing Decals for Hyperion, it would be great we have some new logo suggestion. I guess he would love to contribute for the forum..

Have I spoken too much ?? :D

Right, this works if you are picking quotes from the same page (which is the last page in a thread).

There is a multi-quote mod, let me try installing it.  Some of the mods are unstable, and I see not possibility of me digging into the code to fix issues (if any).

Overall, I would like to avoid adding more and more "mod"s (modifications) to the site, as each additional one tends to slow the site down, and adds complexity in terms of upgrades.  For functionality that is already partly supported and seldom used, I am not sure if it is worth the effort :headscratch:

We had this discussion before, and Merog offered to help !  I am open to submissions, but this is one subject in which I will play the "Soup Nazi" from "Seinfeld" :giggle:

The logo and site design has to go hand in hand.  For the short term, I can try to tone down the orange/saffron. I like the look and feel of the site as it is now, but I see the point about the "bright" orange.

Not really, I do dabble with painting every once in a while :)

Ankur helped me with putting the logo in vector graphics in Illustrator, so it can scale to any size; I had done it initially with Photoshop.   We are making some progress on getting tee-shirts printed with the logo ;)

There are mods like TinyPortal that adds this functionality to SMF.  But it is a significant addon, and I am not sure how beneficial it is to the overall user base.  Judicious use of topic headings should handle it in a "KISS" way.

For example, for every blog type of entry, enter the topic title as "[VINAY'S BLOG] Heli tricks", and they would be easy to locate.  This is sort of a hack and not the best way of doing things, and if there is more interest, I will try the mod.  You can start a poll in a separate thread and see if there is interest ! ;)

I would like that the PM facility to be improved. If we write a long PM, it becoms difficult to move on to the different line, like when we press enter, it does not move on to the next line. there is some problem.

And, i would like the PM facility to show the changes we make to be showed in real time... like for example, when we select bold, it should not show the HTML codes, instead it should make the text BOLD in real time so that we get an idea what it looks like and we dont have to press preview again and again....

Forum's own motor power calculator will also be a good option. Which can show the estimate values for thrust, power wattage, amps etc etc... when we input the specs of the electornics. I really like this one...

That is done to preserve historical accuracy.  It makes sense in some boards, like the "For Sale" or "Wanted" ones.

For others, if really necessary, I can help manually make changes over PM requests.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website

My thought all along on this was that the first thing that comes into mind about RC is planes, and so does the vast majority of members here indicate this in their registration choice.  But let us try something.

I am soliciting a new logo design from members (or even non-members, in case anyone has designers as friends).  It would be good if it can project planes, cars and helis (no boats, trains etc at this time... although I am open to boats if 4 pictures/items made the design better). The timeframe is open, and I will play jury.  The winner will be awarded with "something nice" ;)

One more done.  For people who cannot stand the large amount of activity in the "For Sale" board, we have added the ability to "ignore" boards, effectively rendering them invisible.

To choose the boards to ignore, go to your profile at http://www.rcindia.org/profile/ and choose the "Ignore Boards Preferences" link from the left side.  Then choose the boards you want to ignore, and they will be invisible to you :)

I wish to thank a member of the forum who was fed up with the trade talk for pushing this idea :giggle:

Somebody who had their Personal Messages go over capacity requested to have any method of "exporting / saving / archiving" all existing PMs before deleting them out.

I found an add-on that allows PMs to be exported as a long HTML file.  You should see a "Save all PMs" link on the left of the PM page now.  Depending on whether you are looking at the Inbox or the Outbox, all your PMs will be dumbed out into one big HTML page, which you can save using regular browser functionality :)

Thank you Sanjay/HamAero for responding to Kalyan... that is exactly how group members should be assisting one another.  Regarding contact details, we have enough information here (location and skill level is listed, and you have the ability to PM).  I would suggest that in this day and age (of increasing about of spam over email, SMS and even direct telemarketing phone calls), it is not wise to publicly post your personal mobile numbers or even email addresses.  PM is the way to go, which can be used to collect phone numbers also in a discrete manner (if there is a need to talk in detail).  This will prevent the so called "cold calls".

This is the reason I have not listed my mobile number is not listed on the forum, neither are my email addresses.  The only email address which can be used to contact me is listed as an image at the bottom left of the forum. I would urge members NOT to disclose personal contact information publicly on the forum.  If you wish to help others/beginners at the field etc (which are the noblest of deeds), it is preferred that you please pass on your contact information in private.

I am not sure if we should confuse people with such splits.  Let the beginner ask any question on anything in this board, and then when he has doubts on any specific item, he can go to the purpose specific boards.  What we should do is to increase the information content in the purpose specific boards with topics that would really benefit beginners.  That way, if any beginner asks ANY questions, we can point them to the right location

2. Could we start at 1 ?

1. Here is what I do.  Start the reply with the Quick Reply box at the bottom of the thread.  That way you can see at least the last page in the thread.  If you have just simple text in your reply, click the "Post" button below the "Quick Reply" textbox.  Otherwise, if you want to add smilies or if you want to add attachments, hit the "Preview" button below the "Quick Reply" box, and you will be able to add those (after adding the main bits of your intended reply text).

2.  This is "reply" count. So you can always refer to the "first post in the thread" or "reply number N" (where N starts at 1).

Oh, we have it already !  Just add "/?wap" to RC India URLs, and you get the condensed mobile version ! Please note that there are a few pages where this does not work.

You can also add "/?wap2" or more interestingly "/?imode" at the end to get better formatted mobile pages.

For example, you can access unread posts using : http://www.rcindia.org/unread/?imode

If you mean the "Outbox" for personal messages (PMs), you can choose to always enable "storing of your outgoing messages" by going to your "Profile" and then choosing "Personal Message Options" from the left.  There is an option there to "Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default" :)

Use it judiciously though, as it can fill up your PM quota quickly, and you may not want every outgoing PM to linger around for ever !

The forum works fine on any of the better models, without any changes. The issue is more about people accessing through non-sophisticated phones, and secondly for people who pay for their transfer (usage based data plans).  Accessing the mobile versions of the pages really helps cut down the amount of data transferred.

Some members expressed the desire for an image gallery on RC India.  I had given serious thought to that earlier, but then it seems like carrying a large number of images forever may not be a good idea, especially for a very active forum like this.  The other reason is that having the ability to upload an entire folder full of images essentially make people complacent in terms of the quality of images uploaded (chances of many images of the same type are much higher).

There are so many other alternatives (starting with Flickr), just build well organized "album"s there, and either embed images here using

     [IMG]    [/IMG]

tags or, just reference the album here.

Sorry if this sounds discouraging, but it is definitely for the longer term good !

Respected Anwar sir,
In the videos, in your loved one thread, Your Fevorite Online RC video, I suggest to make a small link line at the bottom of the each video, having the

1) Direct Linkof the Youtube movie/page and

2) download video link (A few script having properties like downloadhelper of firefox that give direct download FLV link of the clip). I have to add manually using code /code. Otherwise all the videos on the same page will be saves with same name and therefore the last downloaded will be available.

3) There may also be the item with description with size of the movie/Data transfer required.
This may help those, who use limited data transfer high speed link and to avoid too much data transfer.

However, my idea may be odd to you, But this is my suggession.

Thanks

I am not sure this makes sense :headscratch:

1.  Clicking on any video will take you to its Youtube page, so the need for a direct link is eliminated.

2.  Downloading Youtube videos is something that is outside of a forum like this.  You can get the Javascript browser addon, or just use sites like keepvid.com

3.  Since Youtube hosts the video, it is sort of hard for a third party site to do that.  I have not investigated this, but all this Youtube related functionality is best handled on the Youtube side itself.

Most importantly, it is not common for people to want to download and keep Youtube videos in general.  Not sure about the RC crowd, may be folks to download the useful RC related ones.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: KALYANPRODHAN on October 14, 2010, 04:18:16 PM
I actually use firefox and see the videos in the same page and same container. It's the advantage of youtube that only a small logo is place in right bottom corner, but outside frame will remain intack of the forum page.
=========================================================
No separate page opened in my browser and that is advantageous to our site.
Moreover unnecessary storing of the online video will take additional space and useless.

Yes, for RC, It's not so important untill it come to micro designing.

In fact designing and scalling for a design or scratch build with guide require much more seeing of the same video to me for detailing and that is why I store the required one to save bandwidth.
=========================================================
Can you mention your browser please (Opera, Seamonky, Mozila, iE or any other popular).

=========================================================

However thanks for early reply and simple answer.

If you click anywhere in the video *while it is playing*, usually it takes you to the Youtube page for the same. This behavior in consistent on Chrome, Safari/Mac, and IE.

Now that is a miss from my part.  I did not expect such activity in the free flight domain

Wonder if we should just put them under "Boats, Kites, Trains and all others",  as "kites" and "ornithopters" are already in there ?  I am not a fan of adding more and more boards, and confusing people with more choices.  It may be simpler to just add "Free flight models" also the "description" of the "Boats, kites....etc" board.

2. Also the button beside the reply button in the PM window is not showing up.

Many beginners arnt aware about free flight models and about how much fun they can be for very less cost. Even i dint know till a few months back. :D :D Free flight itself includes many many types of models - chuck, catapult, thermal, ornithopter, slope glider, rubber power and so on. I also found several posts on our forum about this domain in different boards - meaning there is a confusion about which board to post in .I feel it would be convenient to have a separate board as free flight. That is why i suggested. :)

These things are so far and few in between.  Having the code to check for such rare items seems to be a waste of process cycles :)

If warnings and foot notes worked, we would not have to answer the same questions again and again due to people not using the "search" option.  It is just part of life on forums such as these.  We just need to work on an attitude that we will all be patient (as much as possible), as people learn the etiquettes and begin to follow them.

I also suggested a rule. I think this will go a long way in maintaining the reader friendly nature of the rcindia threads. I am sure you must have seen team bhp forum. Its the most moderated and clean forum in India. Reading is a pleasure and I spend lots of time there.

I dont suggest rcindia needs to be moderated like that, but some basic rules for posting like excessive smilee, avoiding SMS language needs to be implemented. It makes for good reading and will maintain the standard.

I agree.  I listed the SMS language and use of CAPS as things to be avoided, in the rules here :

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/forum-usage-tips/

Glad that you brought this up.  It will be a refresher for everyone to help keep this forum clean and enjoyable.

BTW, what is more painful is people using the "Quote" option instead of "Reply" option.  Replying using quotes to the last post in a thread just pastes text that is available just above, making reading such threads very annoying.  It causes the threads to unnecessarily span more pages and so on.  In fact, most of the time I spend on the forum is hunting down such posts and clearing them.

In fact, I am about ready to seek the help of some community members to help me with this (along with moving posts under the right boards).

The "Unread" thing in "imode" should provide fairly similar capability, right ?  If you use that to read any unread topic, then that topic will automatically be removed from the unread list !

Go to your profile, and choose "Notifications and Email" from the menu on the left.  The options you get are the ones available.  I don't it satisfies your exact requirements, but the right choices there can help you increase/reduce the amount of notifications.

Can we have a window or something where flyers can post where they will be flying, when they will be flying, with whom and what time so that others can join in and coordination can be easier. After the date mentioned the post will expire as there is no need to maintain a record for this. This text box/window should be visible at all times on the main page itself, on the side perhaps.

For example if im going to hoskote on sunday at 7am

Rajath-Hoskote lake-7am-date

So others can see and come there to meet as per convenience.

Right now if i need to inform others i will either have to start a post which is unnecessary as it is useless after the said date or i will have to PM/text/call them which is tedious. So even if i miss out on a few friends they will know when they log onto RCI (Which they will :D) and can also inform guests/non-members of the same.

Just add them as new threads (not posts in an existing thread) in "RC Events", with detailed information in the topic name itself.  For example, post an event with the heading "Bangalore Flyers - Hoskote Lake - Sunday 5th Dec  2010 - 7am to 11am".  It will serve as notice to others, and I will consider creating a child board to move them out after the date.

Can we avoid "Chatter Zone" thread showing up in the "Recently Updated Topics"

Now there should be an option to limit what you see in "Recent" list. Go to your "Profile", and choose the "Recent Posts Preferences" from the options on the left.  That should allow you to pick and choose what you want to see in Recent lists.

I have been notified multiple times now that people who join the forum, many of whom are beginners, are immediately sending PMs to various members (I am a frequent target :) and I don't really mind it). They should really be searching the forum and asking questions in public.

So I have restricted the ability for new members to PM others, until they have made at least a SINGLE post.

Nope... that what I saw in another forum ;)  And the end result is that many newcomers would come and give "thumbs up" or post another "one word comments" on a bunch of random threads, until they can do what they really want (like posting a "For Sale" thread, or  PM someone as in this case) !!  We are trying to make it not difficult for beginners, just nudging them along to the preferred/sensible path !

Plus, after they get their feet wet with a single post, they might as well swim (or is it "drown" ? :giggle: )

You can turn off "notification on reply" in your profile, using the "Notification and Email" menu on the left.  After that, you can choose "Topic Tools" on the top right of any thread to turn on notification individually on any thread.

By default, people would want to know what happens to any thread they have participated in, so the default is pretty sane IMHO.

Show older posts of a particular person ?  That is available on the profile of any member as "Show Posts".

If you want many pages of "Recent posts" or "Recent Topics", they are both available via the main menu on top.  You can go through the various pages, making them, in effect, "Show older posts".

1)What about quoting a post from other topic?
2)not showing multiple replies in recently updated topics by different member with each in  a new line, instead show the  topic name followed by all members who posted in it in a single line

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website

1.  Shall I get you some lime cordial along with that, sir ? :giggle:

This is why the world went to tabbed browsing :)  You open the other topic in a new tab, hit quote and "copy" (Ctrl-A + Ctrl-C on windows, Cmd-A +Cmd-C on Mac) !  Go back to the topic you want to post it in , hit "Reply" and paste ;D  Yep, it is decidedly low-tech !!!

2.  Where does it show "topic name followed by all members who posted in it" ?  Even otherwise, the current design is based on conservation of screen real estate, showing one topic on each line (assuming my guess about what you want is right!).

BTW, please keep these suggestions coming !

Anwar Bhai,
i like this thread (http://www.rcindia.org/tools-materials-and-building-techniques/how-wire-foam-cutter-cane-bow/msg45582/#new) , however i don't want to spoil the flow of the thread by posting as 'i like it' or words to that effect, so if i have a like button (As it is in FB) below all replies won't it be nice ? is it too much of coding ? ;D

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on January 15, 2011, 10:54:02 AM
There may be a "mod" for it, and even if someone hand codes it, it should not be a big deal.  But on a forum like this, it is good to see when people openly/visibly appreciate something they like :)  Posts saying "I like it" does not affect the flow of the thread, especially if one also clarifies WHAT one likes about it !

'Recently Updated Topics' looks clattery!

I have found that the Recent topics section looks clattery. I bet it is most visited single section as most of the regular members use it as 'Breaking News Page'. Some times the new post are hard to read when people use All Caps, and when the single topic gets 'Wrapped' to next line.

1. How about removing the name of the Forum where the post was posted. since we dont have too many forums with varied interest people. If not removing, we can truncate the name of the forum with max 10-12characters

2. Leaving the borders of the table/Grid so that each new topic stands out.

Attaching the SS

<Edit: Instead of putting the border, I made cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" for the table. see the 2nd SS with Forum Name of first few topics removed and above changes done to give space between post topics list.>

Wow, you are putting a serious effort into this :salute:

A lot of what you are asking is one click away, namely "Recent Topics" in the main menu :

http://www.rcindia.org/recenttopics/

It has the grids, better formatting, and more detail.  I duplicated it on the front page to help people save that one click !  But the dedicated "Recent Topics" page is lighter, and will load faster (if ever that is an issue).

Let me see what can be done to improve the readability of the existing list on the main page.

I would strongly urge people NOT to do that, even though the forum software already has the provisions.  The reason is that this may lead to unsolicited calls/mails from not only tele-marketers and email spammers, but also from forum members (YES).

Instead of email, use PM. If you want to call and talk to someone, PM and ask them for their number. This way, the callee gets to decide if they want to entertain phone calls or not. People may voluntarily PM their numbers to others, if they think they can be of help.

We do NOT want the forum to be a source for invasion of privacy of individuals.

I am game for it, as I was myself wanted to break my monotony from OS/Core System  to Web world I worked in last academic days.

I am totally unaware of the new Web Services world of today (grew up in Perl/PHP/CGI days), so lots of rampup. But as Anwar has indicated, it might require much of infrastructure. But we can still come up with some App wich can work on HTML scraping (if SMF does not do obfuscation already).

There is a quota for PMs, did you hit that ?  What error message (if any) are you getting ?
No Anwar,my msg box is only 45%full..I can send pm using laptop but I can't do it in my mobile opera browser.

Can the tweet bar made optional? It is not required for me. I am watching the loading time of the page become a little bit slower than earlier. Data Transfer become multiples of that earlier.

What is the tweeted threads per day? Does it helps it in SEO or Pagerank of us?
I am against of this 1cm strip before every post (even reply).

If it is required, please make this optional at least.

But we can still come up with some App wich can work on HTML scraping (if SMF does not do obfuscation already).

Whats you take Anwar ?

There is an existing solution...  http://www.tapatalk.com

Once this mod is installed on the server side, anyone can purchase the appropriate client application for their smart device, and access the site like a native device application.  See the screenshots in the above link.

But it is a heavy / invasive modification, that is why I am hesitant.

I have enabled Tapatalk on the server :)  If this becomes an issue of any kind (maintenance or speed issues), then I will take it down.

I just tried the iPhone app, it is cool   Cost was $2.99.

If you have iPhone, Blackberry, Andriod etc, please download the client as directed at the Tapatalk.com site (http://www.tapatalk.com/mobile.php), and let me know how it is working out !  Once you install it, just search for "rc india" inside the app, and you should be able to locate the forum.

Here is some information from them :

Unfortunately there is no per user setting for this.  There is an option of making it once per thread, instead of having it on every post.  But making it only once per thread would take away the utility of it, as there may be only one  post in a thread that is truly begging to be shared :)

Yes, it is a bit of an eye sore to have a bar on top of every post, but the data transfer will not be that much.  There are some Ajax calls to Facebook, but they should not be too bad.

My hope is that people are using this to share interesting stuff from the forum to FB and Twitter, which helps with visibility of the forum.  I don't know how often people are using it though.

Out of curiosity, what DOES happen when you try to use PM functionality in Opera ? It just hangs ?  You get a 400/500 error ?

when ever I type a pm it'll load and I have to click the send button. The error is after the first loading is over,it is showing an empty box like a new pm box.If i click the send button its showing as msg body left empty.Earlier days it was ok but since 2 days I'm facing this problem.

That is a lost session issue.  Your session is lost, which could be related to your internet connection taking a reset and new IP being assigned to you, or some kind of local space issue causing your cookie to be not saved for subsequent sending to the server.

Can you try and see if the back button brings up the whole post (whatever you had typed in earlier) ?

Windows anyone? Phuleeezz :) and Gusty Sir... I am still laughing at your comment on "lost it" lolzz
I had thought about making a scrapping client and have a proof of concept client that works in WM6.5 and even on Windows Phone 7 using Silverlight but the thing is it still has to download the entire page without a middle layer/server side logic doing the web scrapping and defeat the purpose of high speed access of mobile device with limited use of Data plans.

Any client would have to be some kind of API based, not directly pulling the pages as is.  That is what Tapatalk does.

I love that smiley in your above post, when it is used at the right place like above :giggle:

So what must be happening is that we have a 65x65 size limit for avatars.  If either the width or height exceeds this, then the image is resized to a plain .PNG file, and loses the animation.  Comprende ? :)

Should be fixed now.

Sad thing is that there are so many topics that can be put in a Wiki, but no one is taking the initiative.  We should have at least two Wiki pages, one about ordering from outside (especially HobbyKing), and another about beginner questions ("How do I start", which gets asked again and again, despite being discussed to death).

It is easy to add stuff, not really seeing any reason for the same though ! Like I said before, about 70% of the audience is airplane fliers, and it represents all others.

It should be perfectly fine to have 4 different versions of the current logo, with the airplane and airplane radio replaced by a car and a surface radio and so on.  If anyone wants to make them, I will gladly make them available here for download :)

I see the point.  But then putting everything in one basket may not be the smartest thing.  If we get 4 versions of the logo, then I can have options in the forum software where each user can enable his own "theme", where he will see his preferred logo when he logs in :)

That way a "car" lover does not have to see his love diluted by 3 other things ;)

Can the tweet bar made optional? It is not required for me. I am watching the loading time of the page become a little bit slower than earlier. Data Transfer become multiples of that earlier.

If it is required, please make this optional at least.

Others are also reporting that this slows down page loads.  So these have been configured to show only once per thread (instead of once per post).

@Ankur - Just wanted to summarize the list for you ;D

1. Need boat logo.

2. Change car logo to use a Truggy or Buggy

3. Change heli logo to use an Align model (or TT Raptor) or something like that, and remove the Apache which is more of a combat heli.

Lot of work cut out for you... as time permits, of course !

Hi Anwar

Have finished all other work except the boat logo...unable to pin point a rc boat for using in the logo..when i convert it to vector the rc factor is lost.

Also i have increase the logo width to 316 px from 300 to accomodate large car and heli.

PFA the other three logos for your crictical analysis.

Regards
Ankur

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on May 01, 2011, 12:49:35 AM
Hate doing this to you, but I have some "critical analysis" !

1. We should leave the car also in just a silhouette as much as possible... in short, reduce the white areas. Even for the surface radio, reduce the white wheel into just a semicircle or 270degrees circle of just the edge color, as in the airplane radio.

2. Similar for the heli, just leave it as a silhouette as much as possible.  Also, mirror the heli on the horizontal axis, so that the tail extends to just above the letter "a" in "India", and the nose of the heli pointed to the right (away from rest of the logo).

3. For the boat, just pick any RC boat picture, but show a slender antenna sticking out of it.  Just make sure that the antenna does not look like a mast, make it thin, and attach it to some place where it does not look like a mast (like the extreme back of the boat).

Thanks again !

Also I've found out that you can use this feature only once an hour.

That is configurable.  I am considering increasing it significantly, like 24 hours.  This should help prevent some abuse, and make its use more natural in terms of frequency.

I like the additions being made to the forum. Goood way of finding the good bad and ugly :) Also could the Applaud/smite be limitted to 1 per Thread? As in user A can smite/applaus user B only once in a thread. To avoid excessive and misleading counts.

So that i'll be able to applaud someone only once a day but i can still applaud other guys, right?

Edit: changed smite to applaud, dont want to attract negative karma.

Two people had "smitten" me inadvertantly, and I have reversed them on request.

Wonder if I should change the links to "Like" and "Dislike" instead of "Applaud" and "Smite" ?

One more suggestion,in the Mega list of all rc shops, can we mention what category of products a particular shp carries?

It would be helpful for newbies right?

Ex. RCBazaar:Caters to heli and airplane hobbyists
ThrottleRC:caters to surface based models

Something like that.

The reputation thing is still being worked on :)  Will announce when it is completely ready.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on May 02, 2011, 12:36:49 PM
OK, the reputation system is pretty much ready to go (barring unforeseen issues).  Everyone starts now with 100 "Reputation Points", and that can be seen in your Profile page.   100 Reputation "Points" equates to 1 Reputation "Power" and that is what is shown below your name in every post.  1000 Reputation "Points" will add one more "reputation bar" below your name in every post.

The most interesting thing about this is that when you give someone reputation, the actual number of points they get is based on your reputation !  So if someone with higher reputation gives a reputation to someone else for any post, the receiver will get more points !

You can also see which posts caused the reputation score of a member to go up or down using "View Reputation" link on the left in anyone's Profile page.

Oh, and the little "heart" shaped icon next to "Reputation Power" in posts is what you use to give reputation to others.  A pop-up box will show up, where you can post reputation, along with a small message on why you felt so (optional for positive, MUST for negative).

The posts in wanted / sale section often tend to expire i.e. the person has sold all items he had or got all items he wanted but the thread remains unlocked and often users post "is this still available??"

Why not have a system where a msg is sent via PM to every sale/wanted post author on a monthly basis asking the person to "continue" sale/want. If the person does not respond the thread should lock itself after a specifeid number of days. - well atleast something like this.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website

You get email notification when some one posts in your thread.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: rajathv8 on May 05, 2011, 12:43:52 PM
No not that. This is a notification from the forum to the seller asking if he wishes to continue the sale or not. So it will ensure that all the sale items are still in sale.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: SunLikeStar on May 05, 2011, 12:51:05 PM
I got your point, i meant if a seller/member posts in for sale thread. And after three months I go and post there 'is this available' or any thing, the seller/member gets email notification about the new reply to his thread and will come back on the forum and respond to the reply. I've seen this happening many times here.
for example: http://www.rcindia.org/for-sale-completed/servos-extentions-leads-battaries-and-more-for-sale/msg48427/#msg48427

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: rajathv8 on May 05, 2011, 01:09:52 PM
Yeah and many times the seller just comes back and says "no it is sold" but doesnt lock the thread and this leads to confusion. so an autolocking meechanism will help.

Hi Gandhar

I am not a car guy so you dont know what you mean by forward Cab body...yes i can highlight complex curves on the body but that would make things complex...i tried to keep this simple as with the other logos.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on May 06, 2011, 12:09:03 AM
Thanks Ankur  ... but you are still in trouble ;)

I think the big issue is that you are working off the wrong dimensions.  If you compare the plane logo that you just posted with the one on the forum right now, I think you will find that the plane is a little too big in your latest version.  I remember requesting the plane to be made smaller, so that the left side image (ie radio) and right side image (plane) take up roughly (not exactly!) the same amount of space. I think we need to do the same to all the images.

Also, there are couple of cosmetic things, like putting another curving "edge line" (the light colored line) on the boat so that the deck can be identified. Now only one of the edges is visible. We don't need much more detail, but I think one more edge line would make it look better. Seems like something like that can also be done to the car, but I can't seem to convey where those one or two edge lines should be !

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: allthatido on May 06, 2011, 12:16:49 AM
Hi Anwar

That is exactly the problem with car body..even i am confused as to where to highlight the edges..if i add a shade to the right part of the body..following continuity i almost highlight whole car..let me see what can be done..will highlight the boat accordingly as that will be easy. Also will reduce the size of the heli/plane/car/boat.

Ankur

Please check the logos.

Some body edge-lines are still missing, but we will go with these. The one I don't like is the heli one. The heli is still too big, and the blades are in a non-natural orientation. Instead, can you use something like this (of course, converted into a silhouette!) :

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website

Doesn't seem to make sense :headscratch:

How can someone who knows no one else join ?  How can people from outside India join ?

I am a big believer in online privacy,  which translates to online anonymity. Why should I let everyone know who I am, on an RC forum ?  The only time  I need to reveal my personal details is when there is transfer of money (or items of monetary value).  Only during such transactions, I will need to reveal my payment information and shipping information, only on a "need to know" basis.  This was one of the main complaints I had with some other forums.

We really don't care about fake profiles etc.  If anybody is worried about transacting with people without enough history, let them no engage in such transactions.  We have enough tools here to point out the bad apples.  Remember that some of significant incidents here happened with people who were active members for a certain period of time.  Let such people decide if it is worth degrading themselves in front of thousands (or at least the hundreds of active users), and the information here will stay for many years (hopefully).

Regarding SMS, I think it is just a fad.  Who wants more SMS spam ?  A forum like this is visited when one is free, and there is nothing going on here that is life critical.

Sorry for being direct, and I do not mean to disrespect your suggestions.  Please keep the suggestions coming.

It would be really helpfull if you add a "DRAFTS" feature. While sending a PM, a draft should be automatically created which saves the state of the message and hencce we do not have to type the full messsage again if any error occurs.

another suggestion :

a person should be asked for his experience in building and in flying and be displayed on the profile...

reason: people who have not learnt flying or any still learning post only doubts and increase their no of posts and the ranking are given based on that... ( senior member, forum veteran, forum hero) but in real he might be good or he might be not...

no offence ment to any one in person..!!

Err... isn't that clear from "RC Skills" which is already there on everyone's profile ?

Also, separation of building and flying applies only to plane folks, the rest of the RC models are not really conducive to this classification.

Also, the classification says "Forum" Hero, not "RC" Hero.  That naming was chosen deliberately.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: AEROVISHWA on June 04, 2011, 12:23:42 PM
yes it makes things clear....!!!

but i think there should be more of a classification..

for eg: VC sir says he is a beginner in RC but a master in aeromodelling...!!

we tend to look up for advice while constructing of planes or assembly of electronics... some improvements in the way that could help us choose some one better for taking expert advice...

and we know what to take and from whom...

even in case of cars of helis.. we need some people who are masters for good guidence..!!

some master have recently joined RCI and have a level as a newbie they might be in this world for ages...

anwar sir some improvement in this field will be of vital help..!!! :salute: :salute:

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on June 04, 2011, 12:27:48 PM
Anyone can edit their RC Skills level at any time. It is voluntary, and RC India does not conduct any tests to validate "expertness", so at best it is just a self assessment (or a guideline).  People can choose what they want to communicate using this attribute (whether building or flying skills), and choose the appropriate level.

Taking the advice of others should be based on your observation of the people here, not based just on a self-professed skill level.

sir you are a master.... the builds i have seen the howercraft, the quality of gliders,
(by master i ment a teacher, a guide....)

building glider might seem easy but it a very difficult task and making them fly u need to be a master... and building of an inchworm ( as what you told me on the call) ... hats off... no words..!!

we always tend to look for advice from people with a lot of building experience..!!

Multiple people asked about how the reputation system works.  In addition to the above details, please note the following :

1.  Each new topic adds 3 reputation points, and each post adds 1 reputation point.

2.  The blue heart icon is used to give reputation to others, so it will NOT be displayed against your own posts (since it does not make sense to give reputation to yourself).

3.  If a member does not pick himself a group (Plane Lover, Car Lover etc) during registration, then the use is placed in a "Default Member" group for sometime, but an automated job moves such members to "Plane Lover" group periodically.

I think, it should be mandatory to fill up the age for every forum member..

Reason being, being an Indian, it seems really confusing to me whether to represent a member by "buddy" or "sir" who is not in personal touch.
I mean, it feels really embarracing when you call a person by name, who is much elder to you, just misinterpreting him as of similar age.

Its an indian forum. And english language lacks only this capability.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website

I would never fill up my age and get people to call me sir/uncle/bhaiya  ;D

I mean, it feels really embarracing when you call a person by name, who is much elder to you
Why should you feel embarised ??? Calling sir is just an imperial thing left in India by the british. Go outside India and start calling people sir and they would think you are a fool and some might even get offended. I call every one by their first name who is not my relative, and as far as I have seen, people really appreciated it. There is a fellow flyer at our field who is 75+ and I always call him by his first name 'Ranjit'.
Also the company I work for spends decent amount of time/effort/money to train people to call everyone by first name. In fact you are held responsible if some one calls you sir, and you get some cabin time with the HR manager ;D

Even i am not going to call anyone bhaiya, chacha, etc.. :giggle:

I agree with SunLikeStar to some extent. But the moment you get to know people personally, you wont like to call them by just name. you will definitely add some suffix or prefix.
I think you have been in corporate world for a long time, so you wont feel it.

I knew that many people will not agree with my point because there is s solid reason, i.e. globalization of english language. And calling a person by name is globally accepted. Even i will follow it when ill go outside india. but at the moment forum belongs to india.

My thinking might be due to the locallity and environment i have been brought up in.But still i would like to keep up with my request, until one gives me a solid reason.

You don't have to change your ways, I was just explaining my case :) My point is some people might not agree with making age compulsory.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on August 18, 2011, 12:31:20 PM
On an open forum like this, there is nothing wrong with calling someone by first name or by "Sir" or even "bhai" (regardless of age).  As we get to know people, one may change from calling someone by their first name to "sir" or "bhai" or something like that (or it can go the other way around); but that remains a personal choice.

We give more respect to some people than others due to a variety of reasons... "age" is only one of them (although it is probably the biggest reason in our culture).  As a matter of policy, we will not request people's personal details to be made public on this forum (earlier thoughts on privacy were stated in this post : http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/suggestions/msg63414/#msg63414).

Observation:
I am not sure about the total number of members at this forum but observing from quite some time that very few of them are active.  :)
People prefer to respond on the posts by their known once.  :)

Suggestion:
Can we have an open chat module along with main board wherein online members can talk with each other in public or in private, this will make this place more live and dynamic.
Two possible Chat rooms 1)Newbies 2) Advenced.  :hatsoff:

I believe we have had this request before but Anwar gave an answer. It was on the lines of this..... A chat room beats the purpose of the forum which is sharing of information. I'm not sure many would use the public chat when a private chat is on hand. I would like a chat room though. And I would prefer we stay in a mixed group as we are. No need to have separate rooms for " newbies" and " advanced" members. :)

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/suggestions/msg18574/#msg18574

IMHO online chat would be very helpful in some cases we have seen lately. The idiotic response of some members can be avoided if we had an option to chat. like asking pics for items for sale.

Can't that be done quite well over PM ?

Anwar Shabh, before Blackberry Messanger people use to send messages via sms only. Once we upgrade to BBM, the convenience of a chat module was felt and inconvenience involved in writing sms'.

My humble submission is that Chat would enable all the online members to contribute and interact in a better way. You will agree to the fact that many members came online everyday but didnt contribute or post anything because in static forum like this you need to draft your thought 'well' before posting it which is quite a hassel.  Chat will make it more fluid and dynamic.

When we say Chat first impression came to our mind is either of Yahoo or Gtalk but we can have an innovative chat module unlike these traditional once which will solve the purpose of making the forum more live.

All the posts on this forum are like high quality literature  :hatsoff: about Aeromodelling compiled by experts and if we add chat that will fulfill the gap of non participative members.

To start with, as a pilot project you may like to activate chat module in select topics like chatter zone or for sale threads and monitor the impact.. :).. I hope the above is in order, btw this is a pure suggestion and I am a non technical person so not sure abt the time and financial involvement in this module and  you are the best person to judge this.

The whole point is that chat will NOT make the forum alive or active... it would only work the opposite way :)  This is the reason why pretty much all other (big?) forums do not have this feature.  Plus if people do want to chat, they have everything from BBM to MSN to GTalk to Facebook !

Some people publish their IM (instant messenger) information in their profile here.

This can be added... I need to look into a package conflict, and possibly tweak the mod source code a bit, as it seems incompatible with the existing list of mods.

Jus a suggestion coz of a observation made a lil while back -

Can it mandatory where bank details (counterfoils , transaction nos, Transaction Ref:) should be sent as attachments via PM?
Where we use the insert image option. and avoid posting them on the thread...

Maybe this is a rule already - I didnt run a search.

cheers

Is it possible to bookmark a specific reply of a topic?

The reason I am asking this is that there is a lot of important/informative information on this forum spread across many topics.

More over many topics have plenty of replies spanning across pages, I am sure there are many of us who want to bookmark specific replies in a topic or else it becomes hard to search the reply in a topic where there a many replies across multiple pages.

Please let us know if bookmarking a reply can be made available.

I am sure all the members will love it.

The same suggestion in a different way, Can we save the replies from a topic right away in our personal area here on rcindia, ie; Our Profile. Plain Bookmarking will not be a good solution as it depends totally upon browser to save our bookmarks somewhere in a file stored in physical memory locally. Once our computer is crashed or renewed or formatted, That would be lost. The bottom line is, Saving a particular reply just in any corner of our RCI profile will stay there untill we remove them ourselves. "Web-Based bookmarks which are saved on a remote web server and are accessible from any online computer", thats what I am talking about...

dst161...Great thought.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I hope you are aware that you can bookmark entire threads already, using the "Add Bookmark" option in the "Topic Tools" drop down on the top right of any thread.

But I see the requirement is to bookmark specific posts, which is not currently supported by the forum software or available mods.  I won't even promise looking into writing a mod myself to enable this, due to my schedule.

So here is a tool/trick that I have been using, not just for RC related stuff, but to organize my life/information in general.  It is a bit of a pain initially, but once you set it up, bookmarking becomes a breeze, from multiple sources.

I use EverNote (http://www.evernote.com).  Once you install it on your PC, your smartphone, and then install the "Web Clipper" add-on for Chrome, you are all set ! :)   You can "clip" entire webpages, or just the URLs.  You can also organize information into nice notebooks for each subject.

I use it for everything from software tips, to storing pictures of warranty/invoice papers from electronics that I buy.  Living on the cloud... is the new way to live ! ;)

Thanks for the Evernote option Mr. Anwar.

You are right, the requirement is to bookmark a specific post/reply of a topic.

And this bookmark also can be stored in the "Add Bookmark" list in which is a feature of this forum.

I will wait for this feature considering your current schedule.

But again I would request if you can find some pockets of time to add this feature.

Or please let me know if I can help you in doing so as I am into the IT industry as a web designer and can get this programmed for you.

How about  a makeover of the Color of the Forum (Tri color is good but the bright orange color attracts the eyes of the passer byes in the office, apart from striking ones eyes too.

Couple of other folks also complained about this... so the color scheme has been tweaked a bit.

Wondering if the visibility of clickable links have gone down, now that the dark green is gone :headscratch:

The earlier green color was better.

Now current brown color is a bit hard to read and yes the visibility of clickable links has gone down.

Why not try black color with blue color on roll over for links.

I am thinking ....that we are good no. of peoples are now associated with thes forum,

So Anyone (like senior member of this fourm), take initiate and Open a Limited firm, (introduce shares in market)
and try to start and increase RC hobby in india by opening Org. like hobbyking or others
who will provide products on cheap rate like HK.

Same as DhiruBhai Ambani Did........

Seems silly.........but can become revolutionary step in RC word

only people who are associated in rcindia.org can purchase shares..........I think people in rcindia.org forum can easily purchase share of value 1000Rs each
Let suppose we have 5000 ppl in this fourm then we can create a company 50L Rs

We can vote on  it anyone want to initiate this .......

There is a bookmark option. Unfortunately, it is a little hidden, on the "Topic Tools" drop down on the top right of any thread.

And you can access your Bookmarks via the "Quick Links -> My Bookmarks" option (in the main menu).

I have always wanted to create (and split) new boards... you can see the discussion here.

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/a-new-board-break-up-for-rc-india/

Time was the issue, because I have some technical challenges in terms of the "pretty urls" stuff that we are using to make the links readable.

I am planning to get back to it soon.

Hmm maybe a generate a Kind of a fixed number of options for the meta data (for the same post to appear in multiple threads) by the creator or moderator for the thread and then have members 'filter' threads based on the choice of meta data

Title: bug/improvement suggestion
Post by: amit_delhi on April 25, 2012, 06:35:21 PM
There are 2 bugs/improvements I want to suggest:

1. When we click on replies/views links, it sorts the threads in accending order, it should be desending ie from highest to lowest.
2. When we search anything on forums and on results page click on any link and than on browser click go back the results page gives and error, it comes up again when I click on try again link.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on April 25, 2012, 09:15:21 PM
1.  Go to your "Profile".  Click on "Look and Layout Preferences" on the left.  Then enable the check-box for "Show most recent posts at the top".

http://www.rcindia.org/profile/?u=5142;sa=theme (this is a custom link for your profile, but anyone can do the same with their own profile).

This is configurable for each member, by themselves.

2.  That is just standard browser behavior when you have "post" pages (pages in which you have entered some information and then clicked "submit").  The way most people work around it is by opening the result links in a new page. Right click and choose "open link in a new page" or something like that in most browsers.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: amit_delhi on April 25, 2012, 09:31:58 PM
Hi Anwar, thanks for merging with existing thread.

I think i could not explain the first point before.

To reproduce it:

1. Pls go to this link http://www.rcindia.org/for-sale/
2. Click on Replies or Views links, you will notice the threads appearing there are in ascending order, thrreads with 0 replies are coming on top. From usability point of view, if I am clicking on Views or Replies link than I am interested in threads with most number of replies or views not least.

Regarding 2nd point this can be achieved by using .htaccess redirects. Added advantage will be search results pages will be static pages without post request and urls will be like this http://www.rcindia.org/search2/pusher%trainer. Easy to crawl by search engines.

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on April 26, 2012, 11:19:52 AM
On the first one, you can always click "Views" or "Replies" again, and it will sort in reverse order.  So it is a matter of just an extra click.

On the second one, what you have described has nothing to do with "back button" behavior (from what I understand).  We are already using .htaccess for SEF ("search engine friendly") urls.  But whether one uses SEF or not  has little do with how browsers handle back button requests on "forms" that are "POSTed". The basic issue is that when you hit back button after submitting a Search request here, you are trying to go back to a page that was just "POST"ed, instead of one on which you did a "GET" (in web parlance).  Since POST requests send information to the server other than just the URL (and cookies), most browsers double check ("are you sure you want to send this information again?").  They do this to prevent things like not making the same payment twice in online banking... for example.  And if you decide to go ahead, you can say "yes, I really want to send this information again" and the browser will comply... which is exactly the behavior you described.

Buy/Sell section needs some serious changes to prevent spam.

Many of those don't apply in our context, and couple of them are valid suggestions.  Most importantly, WHY this seriousness about spam all of a sudden ?  Probably I did not notice the threads that caused concern to you, so please let me know what those are (via PM is fine, public would be even better).

I thought we are vigilant about "spam" per se, so I am concerned about this "serious changes to prevent spam" statement.

One thing is for sure.  There are lots of people who became members here after they sought a venue to sell their RC stuff.  So, at least in a first thought, I don't think it is the right to make people wait for 3 months to sell here.  Making it easy to conduct such commerce is one of the founding reasons for this site.

Another (previously popular and now defunct) Indian RC site had a rule that someone needed to post 10 times or so to use the classifieds.  People would just post "Very nice" and "Good luck" on 10 different threads, just to post their classifieds sale.  I think what we need is a vigilant community, which we already seem to have (at least to a large degree).

Again, if you can point out things that I failed to see, that would be much appreciated.

Misuse comes after Use. And I think RCIndia members haves much more time to grow.
Again, RCIndia community is so frindly and crystal clear (Specially known sellers) that it encourages the hobbiest and cares in afterborn periode to become GOOD LHSs (But at first they all are RC FAN & Helper to me) unlike other forum.

In RC Community where RCIndia stand today is really due to the dedication of Anwar sir and some of specially serious guides cum teacher cum buyers and of course DETECTIVES like Divyam Sir, VC, MJA.. and lots more. Ex. 10 Channel thread. :hatsoff:

Moreover, serious FRAUD sellers :headscratch: does not want to CHEAT only one ??? time and so they don't want to make their BAD Reputation here but sells through separate Site and Engineering college student chain. So they FEAR our beloved forum. ;D
And they really understood the POWER of us, Unitedly.

And so, its not needed instantly.

I am also not sure how I can gain the repo power and the flower things. Most of all I would like the flower things because I love flowers and I often get fresh cheap and luxury flowers bypost from serenata (http://www.serenataflowers.com/flowers-by-post). theflyer,

SMS languages cannot be searched when they are required as those are not dictionary word. The sentence may look complete to poster/writer but not to all. As this is India having so long list of language and binded by English, we try to post correct, complete english for all and that is why this rule introduced and
I personally happy with the rule, though sometime it takes some extra time to post.

Thanks

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on June 22, 2012, 10:29:57 PM
I think there are bit and pieces of the same here already.  When you say "different ARF *AND* helis", I assume planes and helis.  Reviews of local products are available in various threads, you just need to search a bit with words like "Build" and "Review".

I am not sure bunching lots of different planes and helis into one big thread is a smart move.  Doing it per aircraft would be the right way, as the discussion can get long on each one, and inter mingling them does not make sense.

The ability to not show boards like "For Sale" in the Recent Topics lists on front page and in the main menu is ready for use.  You can choose whether you want to see Topics or Posts in the recent list, pick the number of items you want to see, the boards you want to see (or do not want to see).

This can all be done from the "Recent Posts Preferences" option which is on the left side of your Profile page.  Choose the boards you want to see (checkbox on), and from the bottom choose if you want to see the last post in the topic, or every post that is updated, and the number of items you want to see etc. Remember to click the "Change Profile" button at the bottom after making your preferences.

Anwar Bhai is there any way to add single post link just like this
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=22800588&postcount=5
recently i ran into trouble, i was trying to redirect my friend to the specific post(the topic was multi page) i couldn't find any option. One more thing is i don't know what i did but my pm inbox shows old pms first and requires me to scroll down to the bottom to read newest received pm. I know solution is there but somehow i am not able to fix it. I clicked on arrow and it does the job but next login again shows same results

You can always link to any specific post, by taking the URL from the title of the specific post.

For example, the link to your above post is :

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/suggestions/msg116458/#msg116458

When the user clicks the link, the very first post the user sees is the post you linked it, and the user can then scroll up/down as desired.

For the PM display order, go to your profile, click on the "Look and Layout Preferences" from the left, and enable the checkbox for "Show most recent PMs on top".  Here is the link for your profile: http://www.rcindia.org/profile/?u=4107;sa=theme

Great Forum so congratulations to all who put their valuable time, efforts and resources in managing the site and promoting this wonderful hobby.

Wondering if it is a good idea to separate "Buy/Sell" posts from the overall forum discussion? This will make it easy for users who are interested in "Buy/Sell" or forum discussion only and probably have a top menu item to show all posts just like it is right now. Just an idea...

also, how about a button next to the "go down" or "go up" which reads like, jump to first page of thread or jump to last page of thread...?

hope it helps!!

I will assume that this is so it's easier to privately converse with others...

but then what's the point? a forum is a place where you share your knowledge, not discuss it in private... the reason we have a forum, is so that once an expert teaches a beginner, the conversation is all there for others to read... every doubt which someone asks, has already been answered a number of times... if you have a question, use Google. still don't find the answer, search popular forums.. still no answer, then you post on a forum so experts may help you, and create a thread which other beginners can stumble upon... if you add voice calling, then all we will be doing is privately conversing.. that defeats the purpose of a OPEN forum... private conversation should be kept strictly for personal or confidential matters... if you're discussing something relevant to the topic, then keeping it public will benefit everyone...

OK that's it, lecture over... :P

Hi Anwar,
A simple suggestion.
It would be good if we could have an option of removing the Sold out products from the Same thread.
Lets says if a person posts 5 products for sale, its quite difficult for every intended buyer to go to the end of the thread to know what products are still left.
Its a pain from the seller end too to post the remaining items every time. Was it already discussed before?

hmmm.... no, i said that because, by default lcd /led screens are like lights... if you have a lot of lights around a dark spot, it's harder to see the dark spot. on a screen, black is the "off" pixels ie those pixes are not powered. so its easier to read the few pixels that are powered. it doesnt strain the eyes too much then, because it's a more natural reading than looking at a wall of lights and finding the dark spots....

Can we have a category for members called vendors?
Anyone who tries to sell stuff more than say 3 or 5 times in a year can be thus classified.
We do need to differentiate between a hobbyist getting rid of his extra stuff and a vendor.
Or separate areas for sales / wanted / discussions.
Regards. How do you cope?

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: ajayjohn on September 15, 2013, 01:20:49 AM
I am a quite new to this forum and am probably an infant in this hobby line compared to you guys.

Just my 2 cents... I see a lot of user videos, self designed models and other valuable value ads that are unique to this forum. Can these  be leveraged more and organised better?
I mean, maybe we can have a separate video gallery for indigenous content from this forum. Same goes for model designs and other related content.
This will not only make it easier to find, but also probably build a repository of original content which can bring more cross linking and visibility from other communities else where, probably even the international ones.

Another suggestion is to have an archives feature by which old threads can be moved to a separate section and even search results will show results as normal search results first and archived results as a separate section below. Reason being that we have many threads with outdated information which if not screened properly, may be misleading for newbies.

Kind of late now and am sleepy... Not sure if I made sense.   ;D

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website

Thanks Nitesh! :)

I have another suggestion to make in the light of the recent bad sale experiences in the Bazaar area.
I don't know if this has been discussed before but why don't we establish a standard sale template that gets pre-populated in the new post page for the Bazaar section.
This should ideally cover the following aspects,
1) Complete item name and a link to any online store covering details of the product
2) Condition of product
3) Accurate and clear pictures of the actual item for sale
4) Damages, defects, accidents
5) Reason for selling (can even be entered as "commercial" for regular sellers)
6) Expected price
7) Mode and cost of shipping
8 ) Expected time to shipping from date of receipt of payment
9) An extra information (Only place where one can write unstructured info about the listing)

The user simply gets populated the values beside each line. This ensures complete listing with all info as well as outright commitments on dispatch of items.

To enforce the above system, there should ideally be a up-voting or down-voting of the member which is clearly visible in the member's profile beside every post just like his reputation, no. of posts etc. This will make violators be more visible than before as well as discourage violations.
Further, buyers can be strictly encouraged to provide feedback for every sale using the voting system to ensure timely feedback is updated based on attributes like fulfillment of commitments made, packaging and quality of communication.
Lastly, all dealings should happen on the same thread. This will reduce chances of double dealing via PM.

I know this sounds complex for making a simple sale, but it is not as bad as it looks. Its just like a simple form like template in the edit post textarea. Enforcement and moderation is a challenge but i am sure there can be ways to do it. Any feedback is welcome, i can try to provide inputs to whatever i can figure a solution to as well as accept shortcomings in the idea where i find no solution.  :P

I've never contributed to this thread, to the best of my knowledge. This is my first attempt at offering constructive 'suggestions'.

1. Abusive and insulting behaviour is not permissible and should not be tolerated on this forum. If a member is found indulging in such behaviour he should be given a warning and his posting rights should be taken away for a month. A repeat offender should be deactivated for a period of time, as decided by the Administrating team. Any further attempts and he / his email id / his i.p. should be blacklisted.

2. Any member found and proved to be duping or cheating on this forum should be banned forthwith.

3. Any member wishing to offer any item for sale, should first furnish his verifiable details (Proof of Address and Proof of Identity) to the Administrating team. Once these details have been verified (How? ???) only then will the member be allowed to trade. Or else he has to offer a C.O.D. facility.

I hope and feel that if these measures are adopted, it will make RCI a better place to be in.

Regards.

BTW, for everyone not interested in seeing the classifieds related stuff in the "Recent Posts" and "Recent Topics" lists, please note that you can turn this off yourselves.

The steps are :

1.   Go to your profile (http://www.rcindia.org/profile)
2.   Choose "Recent posts preferences" from the left side (under "Modify profile")
3.   Make sure you check all boards except the "For Sale", "Wanted" etc and then click the "Change Profile" button on bottom right.  You can use the "Check all" button to help do this faster.

Here is a shortcut if you want to do steps 1 and 2 above in one shot :  http://www.rcindia.org/profile/?sa=recentPosts

I hope this helps people who are tired of having to weed out the classifieds often.

Is there any limit of social sites like linked, facebook, orkut tweeter... They are often kept under screening and the module may slow down the loading of our page. Though I am not a web related guy but still watched the bad things and recommend not to implement. It can be added as addins but should have a button/checkbox to make on/off. It can be linked with the iconic picture description.

I recommend to add personal 3-5 page of blog/site/social site link only just near the iconic user description which should only link to that page but not load any of module so that one have not to go to user description to get mail id or site if the particular user wants to publish.
After-all we can recommend only as there are merits and demerits of all. So let the admin have to decide.

As the new options are being introduced, selected by user, I recommend to add one butten on top right, "Reset settings" for some of blunt user like us having abhimanyu syndrome to get back at default settings. ;D

Yes, but the Reputation level never limits anyone from engaging into activities.
And no one knows what are their expertise areas are. i can make two accounts and boost up my reputation in a year without anyone doubting me.
who endorsed, for what skills, no ways of knowing except going through their previous posts.
we wonder how some people who never touched anything RC go on advising people like a pro.
put up the challenges for doing so and our members might come up with some solutions and we can implement if we get a better solution.

Such people are just called "confused souls" or "people who really cannot decide which one they like MOST" :giggle:

Hope none of them are looking to get married soon, they will never be able to decide on who to pick for better half :)

Reply # 502 was a little under the belt. I've been married 24 years now, and I love Boats and Planes equally. Since I didn't have the opportunity of meeting Ms. Madhuri Dixit in 1990, there was no confusion in my mind about who I should marry............... ;)

I whole heartedly agree with Topalle. If a member has proved credentials on this forum of being a multiple entusiast, it should reflect on his profile. Or else the profile can be misleading, as it is in my case.

I love Boats and Planes equally.

Time to pick a favorite ? Are you sure you don't love one more than the other, even by an iota ?

Or are you going to live through 120 years of age with this indecision ? ;D

PS: The real reason is that this requires code changes that takes some time, and this is something that seems optional to most of the audience.

Anwar Bhai, why are you cursing me with 120 years (another 71 years) of life? After all, only the good die young - I qualify.

Seriously, I love both equally, if I was asked to live without either, I would probably stop modelling altogether.

I thought Polygamy runs in every Human's grain !! am I wrong. Here is my request. Yes code change like you said will be a big deal !! we get that anwar bhai :)

I remember posting such a request

My New Request

Could we have 'Search the thread' option

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: Swapnil on April 07, 2014, 12:13:59 PM
I've noticed that some people use more than one profile here. It would be nice to know how many profiles are being accessed from the same IP. Say, when we visit a person's profile page, maybe it could show the handle names of all the profiles it shares it's IP with. This will save a lot of confusion, misunderstandings and frauds.

This is not a suggestion. I know this would require a lot of coding time. I'm just asking if it's possible.

Okay while we are at it, can we have a 'Multi-rotor/copter Lover' too please? Even helis can come under it as they also have tail rotors  ;D

Actually heli's and multi's are categorized under 'rotorcraft'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotorcraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotorcraft) .
Excerpts from wikipedia
"A multirotor[1] or multicopter is a rotorcraft..."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicopter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicopter)
"A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft..."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicopter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicopter)

Could we have 'Search the thread' option
I second that.

The option search the tread can be added as radio button under search bar i suppose.. that will make life a lot easier both for users and admin

Okay, that's a dumb thought, I didn't really think it through (what if a person were to use different IPs?).

Still, I wish there was a way to see all the handle names a single person was using.

And why would we need the 'search thread' option?

Say you have a large thread and want to search for something, it's easier to use than the search on the forum.

Sometimes we share a couple of PMs in a row. It would be handy to have a brief list of recent chats below the message we are replying to. That way we can have a quick glance at any points we are chatting about.

I suggest that there must be even a search the particular part of forum (like for planes or boats or cars or helis etc)

See the advanced search options (from the main menu, choose the Search dropdown).

You can search one or many boards of your choosing.

Anwar,
As someone said, that he can be a boat or a plane "lover"
Can't you, just above the "reputation power" add in 4 little pictures of a plane/boat/heli/car
and then when a member updates his profile he gets these 4 options, and once he selects the pictures he likes, it reflects below his profile.
The pictures he hasn't chosen are greyed out, the ones he has selected are colored.
 just my 2 fils!

I suggest that the currrent sections must be split like the ones in forums abroad....
Electric planes can be split into trainers, sports, scale, 3d, etc....
Boats can be split into warships, tugboats, yachts, cruises, fishing boats, patrol boats, etc...

Well now, I may sound crazy to few. But, Why not change the forum software to something new? Of course SMF is great considering its free and opensource but I feel this has turned to be retro style and lacking features... If RCI has enough income through ads/donations we could switch to some next gen forum software which also has tons of features for administration, modifications and also user experience. Cheapest as of now is xenforo priced at $140 with support and upgrades for 1 yr. Then on you pay $40 for another yr of support and upgrade if you wish. I guess that would be cheap when even few people on the forum supports RCI with what they can. like is 50 ppl give 160, you could buy out the license.

Else, there is the nulled world... updates getting released the next day after official updates go live! But I wouldnt recommend it as xenforo is such a great software priced low than others... Any admins feeling impressed and want to try the forum features, if you wish I can do a private installation of my license to test out for you ;)

P.S: How about removing the software version from footer? It may be a security risk. Just a thought though :P

Title: Re: Suggestions for the RC India forum/website
Post by: anwar on June 08, 2014, 11:37:41 AM
I am intrigued by Xenforo, I had not done research on forum software for the past 2 years as SMF was good enough (and totally free). Thank you for bringing this into my attention.

Cost is not an issue, can be covered by Google Ads here.

I will find some time to play with it on a test sandbox. I can arrange licenses.

Forum software version being public is not an issue, typically I am on the latest release on the same day, and have additional protections on the server.  Nothing is 100% secure in this world, as we all should know by now.

Post by: vijai on June 08, 2014, 12:29:52 PM
Xenforo seemed the best to me. I tried IPB, Vbulletin, phpbb and xenforo first with nulled license (except phpbb) and was very much impressed by xenforo appearance and ease of editing and feature rich than others... Xenforo seem to work for the people without having money as their major motive (which isnt the same case with others). Their support is quick as hell. On the whole, I'm very much satisfied with the money I paid for them. Every time they release a major update, there is a new feature in the core thus reducing greatly the add ons. You should indeed try it when possible.

Well yeah. version isnt an issue but if you hide them, at least novice threats would have to do an extra step to find out the vulnerability ;) I always do that as it doesnt take much time. Then at last its upto you to do it or not :)

One suggestions for the sales and wanted boards I would like to give is to make a form of some questions and stuff. it would not be possible to post a thread in the sales or wanted board without filling the form completely without leaving a single question. for e.x. http://www.digit.in/forum/pc-components-configurations/179840-gaming-pc-under-40k.html (http://www.digit.in/forum/pc-components-configurations/179840-gaming-pc-under-40k.html) http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1655398/building-730-000-gaming-india.html (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1655398/building-730-000-gaming-india.html). I know this is a bit different but we could use the same concept.

A lot of beginners have problems starting in the hobby with no one present to help them face to face. It happened to me when I was starting, but RCI gave me a platform to ask questions and meet Anish(medicineman1987) who helped me a lot.
Just so beginners don't get left out: Can you make a section with all the locations and states and the name of flyers you can contact in that particular area to help you out.
Instead of beginners posting threads like 'Need help in XYZ location' they can directly contact willing and helpful individuals in their area to solve on the field and "Noobie" doubts, even take them out on a flying day.

I would be very happy if I get to be the first to join this initiative.

@iamahuman- I knew about the thread, forgot to mention it. What I meant was that willing and helpful people come up and give their details voluntarily so they can be contacted directly. It also should be attached as a major topic for beginners so they can start off with some counseling.

Can we have an article section for stuff like this:
http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/iyer's-tech-talk-how-much-power/ (http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/iyer's-tech-talk-how-much-power/)
It would keep all information posted by the Author in one place and then comments/discussion can be added at the bottom, rather than having comments mixed in between posts related to the topic. The author should also be allowed to add to his article any time he feels like.

Now that microcontrollers are becoming an integral part of RC, can we consider having a separate topic under "RC Equipment" dedicated to "RC Electronics and Microcontrollers". This will spawn a new set of activity on the forum and help in aggregating all electronics and microcontroller related discussions at one place.

They will just jump in every thread and post "Nice", "good" etc. to get the post count.

Exactly...

Discussed earlier too : http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/suggestions/msg100274/#msg100274

A lot of why things are the they are presently is after careful thought and experimentation.  The big leap now is to move to a forum software that has much more social media integration... that has been in the cards for a long time, did not get enough time to handle the migration challenges, especially related to the SEO/"easy to read" URLs that we have been using.

Sorry for the mistake :giggle:,I meant "oneline" replies or one liners.I have corrected the same in above post from "online" to oneline. What I meant was ,it's not possible to post replies in one word or just smiles ,in forums like teambhp and that will deter people with intention to increase post count and reputation,by shortcut, to some extent.
And I appreciate your policy against "sms lingo"
