Title: Al-Khor RC airfield in Qatar
Post by: anwar on January 03, 2010, 06:47:00 PM
If you end up moving to Qatar, one thing you do not have to worry about is a proper RC field

This video from a powered glider has some nice aerial views of the field.

That was wonderful flying, how long has he been flying Helis?

Also was there any reusable part left after the crash?

The crash looked like the heli went out of fuel or something ;D

Ali has been flying close to an year, may be slightly more.  He is one of the fastest learners I have come across.  And everyone knows the trick; lots of sim time, and some willingness to crash/spend ;)

Also was there any reusable part left after the crash?

Yep, in fact a whole lot is safe.  The blades booms etc are gone, but the frame, engine, servos etc usually survive.

The crash looked like the heli went out of fuel or something ;D

The crash is caused either by pilot error, or some mechanical failure.  Still waiting confirmation on that.

Looks like wrong pitch input caused it.

Flew with him again today.  Yep...  it was wrong pitch input... pilot error :(  The heli is rebuilt though.

Some non-RC action from the old RC airfield in Qatar. This field is now a full scale only field.  There were some large turbine RC aircraft being displayed and flown, but they were removed by the time we got there.

Some turbine action by a friend, at the main field, and a private (carpeted!) desert field.

He applied pitch in the wrong direction, hence the crash.

Mounted a regular Sony camera on the HK FPV plane.

Reduce the volume, the thing is noisy !!!

PS: No marks for guessing who the pilot is ;)

Being in Qatar was the best experience during my transfer there..
Hence, we were stuck with Nitro buggies.
Unfortunately, I used to stay in Ras Laffan and did not come out to Al Khor most of the times, but the open places are the best for flying.
If I come there sooner, I am giving you a call Anwar.

There is a place called barmer in Rajasthan, very similar, open space lot of sand dunes to mitigate your fall, required air filter for your engine though. During winters on a bright sunny morning to  do aeromoelling is like any modelers dream. These videos and pics reminds me of early nineties Rajasthan in winters, like Arabian nights. Our field has been witnessing more and more variety of models.  We had our first DLGs and hexacopters recently.

The hexacopter uses a board called "Copter Control", with a bluetooth comm board for remote configuration from the laptop.  Interesting aspects of this board are the fact that all gyros are SMM, and nothing is standup vertically on the board.  Also, the board documentation makes it clear that no special mounting is needed (unlike almost all other boards which require the mounting to be vibration sensitive).

Some pics are attached... video to follow.

Apparently this board is so much in demand, that people are asking for high premiums !  Someone on RCG started this funny thread in response

Nope, Qatari friends, including Ali, our local heli 3D master.  They are flying just outside the Ritz Carlton Hotel (in Doha), which also has a marina for private boats.

As a great example of government support for RC as an organized hobby, Qatar's government built this RC airport, which is big enough to double as a light aircraft field on occasion.

Went to the field after 5 months of travel and busy times :( :)

Someone had this plane that could be converted from high-winger to low winger, aptly named "SWTICH"! The one shown in the pic is the low winger incarnation, just take out the black canopy and add the piece that is sitting on the ground, attached the same set of wings, and it becomes a high winger !
