Six-year-old Aditya Pawar, a student of grade 1 at the Delhi Public School, Bangalore, knows what it takes to aim high and succeed. Since June 2012, this self-taught aeromodeller has spent many a weekend practicing on simulators, then proceeding to fly model planes and perfecting his loops, rolls and hover techniques. This training helped him compete and win in the Under-15 category, at the recently conducted Aamby Valley International Aeromodellers Meet 2013. He was one of the youngest pilots to win this accolade.
What began as a hobby is fast becoming a passion with the youngster. He was introduced to aeromodelling by his father, Abhay Pawar, also an enthusiast of the sport. Aditya began flying on a simulator and with a little guidance and lots of practice; and soon picked up the basics of flight.
Noticing that Aditya had become good at flying on the simulator and not crashing the plane, Abhay encouraged him to try flying a model outdoors. Initially, he started flying as a buddy on an electric glider, with his father. By July 2012, Aditya had successfully taken the glider out on a solo flight.
His well-executed take-off and landing gave him confidence to progress in the sport to flying larger planes. Aditya was also keen on performing aerobatics and was soon able to master the glider enough to do basic loops and rolls.
Bored with the usual aerobatics, Aditya was keen to try something new, the hover technique. As Abhay had little experience in hovering, he decided instead to show Aditya YouTube videos about hovering. Soon the young enthusiast had returned to his simulator and learnt to perform the hover technique with zero error. Seeing Aditya execute this complex aerobatic maneuver so well, Abhay was keen to help him get some serious flight experience. By October 2012, Aditya was practicing on the Multiplex Acromaster, first as a buddy and then taking it solo to hover, all in a very short while.
Then it was time for Aditya to get some experience flying the high-wing Nitro plane. His father gifted him a Boomerang Trainer, which he effortlessly mastered in a couple of weeks. After Aditya performed sustained aerobatic flights, the wings of the plane just gave away!
He was soon flying a Seagull 40, a low-wing aerobatic plane. He is constantly pushing himself to get the maximum out of the weekend flight experiences. Inverted flying is what Aditya seems most taken with; getting the plane inverted just a couple of feet off the ground and doing eight to nine circuits without getting disoriented.
Aditya loves taking on challenges and emulating what much more experienced and older aeromodellers are performing. That is what led to Aditya participating in the Aamby Valley International Aeromodellers Meet and flying his Acromaster in the Under 15 category. To the surprise of the judges and the people gathered, the little champ went on to win the first prize in the event.
The judges were also very impressed with his confidence and his flying skills. He was the youngest pilot participating in the event. With more experiences to gain, Aditya is rearing to learn more and become a top gun.
