Title: RC flying in Lucknow
Post by: piyushabhaysingh on January 22, 2015, 01:06:36 PM
Hi,

I am a newbie and I am interested in RC flying and aerial photography. I am from Lucknow. How do I go about it? What kind of permissions I would need and from where?

Hi Piyush, I'm quite new to the hobby myself but have found some killer resources including this forum which has led to some intensive learning.

Since you are new to flying I suggest you focus entirely on being a "pilot" first. Once you become proficient at flying, you can then then start getting into aerial photography/fpv. It'll be damn hard getting any decent shots/composition if you can't pilot your bird well enough. You will just end up wrecking your gear (and your ego). Not to mention how dangerous it could be for people around you when you're flying.

I'm not sure if our country has enforced set of rules/permissions (other more experienced members can help with this) but you could follow some logical rules:
1. Don't fly near airports
2. Don't fly near people
3. Get a simulator (can't stress this enough)
4. Get a programmable radio - Dual rates and Expos are you friends when you're starting out. Don't worry if you not already know what these are.

Also, you will need to choose a platform for flying - as in a multi-rotor or a fixed wing (planes) or something totally different. Multi-rotors definitely have an edge when it comes to aerial photography.

I would suggest following these steps to quickly get to a decent level:
1. Get some simulator time (provides safety to your gear, to yourself and to the the people around you)
2. Build whatever you wish to fly. I think this is almost always better than picking something off the shelf. Teaches you so many things that can go wrong and how to handle them.
3. Find somebody to fly (buddy-box) with. This would increase your time in the air and you'll learn much more quickly.
4. Get a ton of spares. Because you will certainly crash. Everybody does.

Once you are comfortable with things like maintaining orientation, hovers, flying in the wind, etc. you can move on to putting cameras on your bird. Mind you, this is not going to be cheap so you'll need to be prepared.

Happy flying!!

Sorry. Forgot to add the resources I was talking about.
1. RCIndia of course
2. Flite Test on YouTube
3. RCGroups - probably the biggest community of RC in the world but it's not really beginner centric so you might end up feeling a bit lost if you have no idea what you're getting into.

I can safely say that almost everything I know and have learnt has come from Flite Test on YouTube. They are skilled, modest, honest and cheap!! The cheap part is important since they attempt to show you the cheapest and safest way of doing things. Take some time out and watch every god damn video they have put out. It'll surely help. Also checkout relevant threads here since they are much more tuned to what happens in India.

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to build a couple of foamies and learn to fly. I live in the SGPGI campus and have a huge field with tall grass that will hopefully come in useful when I crash.
Unfortunately my campus is pretty close to the airport. While planes never fly overhead, I have seen many helicopters fly right over my head as they approach the airport. Any idea about whether flying is permitted here?

Thanks!  :help:

Well.... you need to be at least 10 kms from the airport to fly or else you are inviting trouble..... at some places guess it is 10 miles

Thanks shobhit17. The butchery ground seems to be around 6km from the airport and everyone flies there. Unfortunately, my campus is just 2 km from the runway and a long way from the cantonment.
There are some massive fields behind Deen Dayal park and it's 6.5 km from the airport. Perhaps I'll try my luck there  ;D

That aside, has the DGCA published any official guidelines regarding RC aircraft? I've been googling like crazy all week with no results whatsoever! This just invites trouble from our lovely cops who can never pass up a chance for a little extra cash.

Well Butchery Ground though is close.... but is the known flying area and frequented by many.  It is safe for aeromodellers as it is controlled by the Army and people are checked before they enter the place.  Other places you may be hasseled by the local police if they fell like doing so.  As regards to Aviation safety it still falls within the 10 Km zone.

The DGCA has not come out with any specific guidelines for flying yet.... but is expected to do so soon.  It will clear up everything as DGCA would formulate these as per international guidelines and safety procedures.
