Clap Amazing. I joined this forum today when i was looking for alternative of other Indian rc forums because of their annoying policies and thorough commercial attitude. Cheerio to owners of this forum.

I would also like to point that i came across some posts on this site which are biased towards Indian LHS (promoting themselves). I am not against it but a buyer has all the rights to purchase from wherever he wants at the prices he likes. I purchase all of my items online from all over world not only from HongKong. But sometimes i have to buy locally too even on higher price because of urgency. I don't mind that and afaik most of the sellers(LHS) in India are in this business because at some point they got hooked on RC flying. After some time they realize they can purchase things cheaper in bulk from abroad and cut the cost of their own flying by making profit here in India. I see some very ridiculously priced items on various Indian sites/LHS and eBay India also. Even i used to purchase from eBay and other people when i started until i realized i can buy these things very cheap myself. Now i see many beginners making the same mistakes.

As the question of custom clearance and shipping arises, I have never had any problem with them neither will u if u r not importing things commercially. customs only tend to harass ppl with commercial interest cuz it has some monetary interest for them. If I am allowed I can put a whole thread on how to import all the RC items at lowest cost possible. Yes u will have to pay customs on some items which are priced above 10000 and also wait long time in some cases but in the end u & ur pocket will be happier.

Thx & Regds.  Salute

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

A lot of people order online, and everyone is aware of that option.  There are good LHSes and bad LHSes, like anything else.  If you go through this forum, you will see that ordering online is one of the often discussed optics, including the issues (and possibilities) with customs, shipping etc.  You can feel free to post on this topic, please do some searches and  add material that is not already discussed though Smiley

In light of the environment that LHSes are operating in, people need to factor in a REASONABLE added cost factor (in terms of duties and taxes) that the LHSes have to deal with (which are not applicable a lot of times when individuals order items).  For most LHSes, there are not enough flyers to give them sustainable business. As one senior member here commented, "running an RC store full time can be considered realistically only when the number of hobbyists in our country becomes 100x".

If I am allowed I can put a whole thread on how to import all the RC items at lowest cost possible.

That would be super helpful! Been going through a lot of posts but could not find proper tips on ordering online..

Anwar bhaiyya, since a lot of posts deal with ordering online, it would be really great if there was a mega thread on tips for ordering online instead of having to go through all the posts hoping to find the required information.. Like what is the max weight/size/price i can safely order online to avoid custom hassles, procedures if the order is held up at customs, if i'm ordering to say Goa which customs i'll have to deal with, restricted items e.t.c..

I am not against such a thread.  But I don't think there are really any rules on what works and what does not, it is as unpredictable as anything else !

But then some people seem to have methods that work for them.. For eg. heard somewhere that sticking to <750Gms parcels helps avoid custom hassles.. don't know how far this is true though.. It would be really helpful to a first timer like me if they could pitch in with their tips for ordering online..

Not sure about the 750gms, but small packages help.  So does not ordering radios and full ARF kits with everything in one box.  Those are the basic rules... a pretty short list ? Smiley

Keep it simple... i have never had any problem with the smaller packet. Unless you you order too many items (different items or many pieces of same items) in one shipping, customs would put some duty charge and let it go, except for items like Radio. I recently got even AXN Floater which was a Huge 3x1x1 feet Box. But yes, there was a simple 'Thermocol' plane which customs did not mind.

So just dont over do it by putting too many items or too much under declaration of invoice. Rest is all luck - as Anwar said, no rules! just follow best practice.

My other doubt was that if my parcel does get stuck in customs and i have to pay the duty (which i don't mind paying), will i have to go to Mumbai/Delhi/Wherever or can i deal with it right here from Goa itself? This has been the main factor preventing me from ordering online..

Ur parcel getting stuck in customs and paying duty are different things. It works like this assuming that you used country post like HK, India post, EMS ---->
1- Parcel reaches border point i.e ND, BOM, MAD, etc
2- If its speed post then sent to concerned FPO for quicker delivery & also if anything restricted/suspicious/under invoiced/ or for levying duty for bigger packets (more than 500/750 gms no fix rule for this). if its normal post ( i.e small envelope or box) its sent to home city directly
3- If ur parcel is detained by FPO customs thats another story.
4- other wise duty is levied as per invoice declaration.
5- duty is collected when they deliver the item. u can simply refuse to pay duty and not receive the parcel if u wish in certain cases.

If u use services like Fedex UPS DHL etc. then the parcel is collected by concerned company [they pay duty on ur behalf (its never detained cuz they wont take such items) and collect it when delivering]. fedex service is best used for importing radio or big items like Kits. although u have to pay a lot for shipping and duty but u get it at ur doorstep. no hassles. its my personal experience. use it on ur own discretion.

EMS/Speedpost has its own customs cell. FPO comes in for Air Post Parcels, registered or otherwise. From my experience  parcels can get stuck for ages at the FPO as there is no method of tracking, or even knowing if the material has arrived.

In both cases, the duty is collected at the time of delivery, by the postperson.

Customs is supposed to send you a notice if they impound your parcel due to missing/wrong invoice. You can either provide the missing detail by post, satisfying on which they would release the package to the Post Office for delivery along with the duty/cess.  This does not happen some times.
If your package is too much delayed after it reaches India, you can get to the regional FPO who would give you a BO number of your item if Customs have impound it and then you have to track that with the Customs folks. a Wait of 3-4 week max is safe after which you should seek with the customs else the package may get destroyed/lost/whatever.

Thanks a LOT guys  Smiley The last few posts cleared more doubts than reading posts for the last month did!  Bow

Ok, here is the shipping table for HC..

Quote
Express and large parcel shipments
Shipment Type   Cost (USD)
EMS Express (INDIA) 0g - 999g              $37.08
Air Parcel (INDIA) 1000g - 1499g      $23.13
Air Parcel (INDIA) 1500g - 1999g               $26.27
EMS Express (INDIA) 1000g - 1999g   $52.41
Air Parcel (INDIA) 2000g - 2499g     $29.42
Air Parcel (INDIA) 2500g - 2999g     $32.57
EMS Express (INDIA) 2000g - 2999g   $67.74
Air Parcel (INDIA) 3000g - 3499g     $35.72
Air Parcel (INDIA) 3500g - 3999g     $38.86
EMS Express (INDIA) 3000g - 3999g   $83.06
Air Parcel (INDIA) 4000g - 4499g     $42.01
Air Parcel (INDIA) 4500g - 4999g     $45.16
EMS Express (INDIA) 4000g - 4999g   $98.39
Air Parcel (INDIA) 5000g - 5499g     $48.31

Flat Rate International Shipments
Shipment Type   Cost (USD)
International Air Mail ($20 limit) 0 - 100gr    $2.99
International (Registered) Air Mail 0 - 100g   $4.79
International Air Mail ($79 limit) 100 - 250gr   $5.95
International (Registered) Air Mail 101-200g   $7.80
International (Registered) Air Mail 201-250g   $9.97
International (Registered) Air Mail 251-500g   $12.12
International (Registered) Air Mail 501-750g   $14.99
International (Registered) Air Mail 751g - 1kg   $19.95

EMS Express : 3-4 Days transit time. (Incl. Tracking + Registration)
Air Parcel : 6-21 Days transit time.(Incl. Registration)
Air Mail : 6-39 Days transit time.

We strongly recommend customers to select (Registered) over regular Air Mail.
HobbyKing.com accepts no liability for unreceived 'Air Mail' parcels sent without registration.

Now from what i understand, the "International Airmail" shipments are the ones which will go through the FPO.. While the ones in the first group i.e. "EMS" and "Air parcel" will have their own customs cell? Am i right?

A few more doubts..

Ur parcel getting stuck in customs and paying duty are different things.

Oh.. In that case when do they get stuck in customs? What is the procedure then? Which FPO will i have to deal with?

If its speed post then sent to concerned FPO for quicker delivery & also if anything restricted/suspicious/under invoiced/ or for levying duty for bigger packets (more than 500/750 gms no fix rule for this). if its normal post ( i.e small envelope or box) its sent to home city directly

So in this case which shipping method should i select for say smaller components (ESC/motors/props/batt etc), and which method for bigger things (charger/radio/arfs etc)?

What about invoicing and marking as "gift"?

duty is collected when they deliver the item. u can simply refuse to pay duty and not receive the parcel if u wish in certain cases.

If i refuse to collect my parcel, does my money get refunded?

I dont know much but i know if u use speed post it will definitely go to FPO and detention chances are very high.

Ur parcel getting stuck in customs and paying duty are different things.

Oh.. In that case when do they get stuck in customs? What is the procedure then? Which FPO will i have to deal with?

If detained FPO will send u notice for it. All info will be provide by concerned FPO.

If its speed post then sent to concerned FPO for quicker delivery & also if anything restricted/suspicious/under invoiced/ or for levying duty for bigger packets (more than 500/750 gms no fix rule for this). if its normal post ( i.e small envelope or box) its sent to home city directly

select normal mail or registered for small amount/small items even charger. some times they do get lost so its a risk. u will learn to accept this in time. and always get bigger things from Ebay not ebay India(even if u get it cheap somewhere else) if its more than 200$ cuz if u dont get ur item ur money is safe. about invoicing and gift check ur PM.

duty is collected when they deliver the item. u can simply refuse to pay duty and not receive the parcel if u wish in certain cases.

If i refuse to collect my parcel, does my money get refunded?

For whatever reason, if u dont receive ur item Ebay will refund u. dont know about other sites.

U will receive a notice with FPO Address and contact Info. They will be able to tell u reason for detaining parcel and the necessary action on your side. Most likely urs will be Panaji Head Post Office, Goa - 403001

I have been to the EMS "office" and KNOW that they have their own valuation cell. FPO comes in for ALL post parcels, be it air or sea, registered or not.

There is, therefore, no reason for FPO being involved with EMS clearance.

How do i find out if my FPO will be Panaji-Goa itself? Because if it is, then i have no problems ordering anything i want.. Goa is such a small place that i'm bound to know someone or the other who works there.. That'll speed things up!

Why not ask someone u know from post office itself. Or u can place a dummy order not more than 10$ to get the idea how things work there?

Once again. EMS/SPEEDPOST consignments will clear at Mumbai. As far as I know, post parcels will also clear at the FPO, Mumbai. I doubt whether Goa has an FPO but you could find out. If clearance is in Mumbai, then (in either case) the consignment would be forwarded to your local PO for delivery and collection of custom duty (if any) + local delivery charges.

If the $10 item is too small, E-bay guys would put it in an envelope (unregisterred post) and it would either come without any customs hassle/ duties or get lost (post man/port guys fleecing it)

Best bet is try $2.99/100g package from Hobby King. They send such small packets as small box ( Oxford Mini Dictionary size) which would be a good dress rehearsal/Reece how things would go.

Here is what i do when my parcel is detained. my first question to them always is " WHY HAVE U DETAINED MY ITEM?" they simply say its because of this or that. And I ask them SHOW ME IN WRITING AND GIVE A COPY TO ME”. Believe me i have never asked a third question. Try this next time if ur parcel is held up. If they send u a letter stating that u need this or that permission then send them a letter back and ask "please give me a copy of order or policy under which i am required to produce the permission u r asking for because for all I know I don’t require any such permission?" All u need to do is ask them to give it in writing and under which policy? Its their job to show u the rule/policy by which they r holding any item. They will never give anything in writing. If they give it to u in writing and u cant handle it further then contact me on PM . But I sincerely hope u wont need to PM me.  I am giving my secret cuz we really need to do something about this and I am fed up. Also note be polite but firm when talking to custom @******s.

Thats why I wrote in the end BE POLITE BUT FIRM. You should talk with confidence and look like you know what you are talking about. Do your homework before going there. BTW they can not ask you to leave without answering you. If they do go to their immediate higher authority and explain the situation to him. A better thing will be to get befriended with a lawyer and take him along. Also all this circus is the main reason I never proceed further in getting RC rules in India cleared up.

If you have transferred the funds just the previous day, you owe it to them to dispatch the material in a reasonable time. The information you are seeking should, in fairness,  have been asked for before you placed your order.

Hey! Hold your horses! My post was generic and not, in any way, directed at "why didn't you ask ME  first" !!

You are more than welcome for help, now, and in future.

Hey the seller is a very nice person.  I have asked him a million questions about prices and his reply was prompt and patient. No buying experience though Smiley He has been on the forum for a long time and many are satisfied with his service. Don't worry Smiley

So far, it has looked like the money is as safe with this seller as you keeping it your bank account.

This should be further consolation :

In my experience duty is charged if the total is 10,000 inr or more. Also I use aramex shop and ship. This way I'm sure my item will reach me in 5 days. And I get tracking updates.

@ Sanjay.    I'm not sure about that. But aramex told me I can buy stuff worth 10,000 inr with out paying duty.

Also regarding your baggage allowance you can bring USED personal items worth 35,000 inr duty free. double check to be sure with CBEC website. The rules regarding dutiable items isint very clear for RC related products.

I bring and buy (online) stuff all the time. Haven't been asked to pay duty yet 😊

Hello RC pilots, I guess this is the most relevant thread to ask my first question. I am planning to order WL v977 from banggood.com They have cheapest price and free standard shipping (7-25 days). My concern is about the 2.4 GHz radio transmitter included in the package. Total price is below $100 USD but I am not sure about total weight of the package.

Does anyone have prior experience in ordering RTF Helis from Hong Kong / China? if yes please advise me.

I can see RTF packages of WL v922 available online in India hence there can not be any ban on importing.

newHeliFlyer, you better order v977 from any online store within India, as foreign imports office would definitely block it asking for an NOC certificate from WPC for its 2.4Ghz radio.
I had ordered one and after trying a lot to convince both customs and WPC officers had to return it back to Banggood. It has not yet reached banggood and my money is now stuck.

You better find something in india itself , if you are hell bent on getting it from abroad DO NOT GO FOR STANDARD SHIPPING , go for UPS or FEDEX or DHL they will get it out for you but you will pay import duty

Well, i dont think even UPS OR FEDEX will be able to get it. It really depends on how seriously the FPO in your city takes their work. In Mumbai they are damn serious it seems. By law any radio not type approved by WPC shall not be imported. Even though an ebay seller in Delhi could managed to get it and I bought it from him. May be someone in Delhi would be of any help for you.

I read a very long thread regarding this same topic in this forum and it seems that guys have had all sort of experiences. Some suggests that registered air mail is the best to avoid any customs scrutiny. Nikhil, as you said it all depends on the location too, it seems. I am in Bangalore and I just took(before reading these replies) a small risk of ordering only transmitter worth about Rs 2500 by registered air mail. I could not find FexEx /DHL / UPS etc as shipping option and many people suggested EMS is no go. I will hope for the best. I just can't find any one selling v977 in India. rajjaiswal92 glad to know about your positive experience I hope I'll get the radio. Thanks.

Good news!
I got my WL v977 transmitter today. It was shipped by Banggood.com on 26 Aug 2014. Now I am going to order for the v977 heli BNF version.
I guess I am one of those who got lucky with customs.
Thanks to RC India for the wealth of knowledge shared here.

For anyone who would like to know what I did.
I ordered the radio transmitter alone. The cost was 39 USD. Banggood.com made a customs declaration of 7 USD, looks like that is the cost of production;-)
Also, as I paid using my paypal account I was able to instruct banggood to drop shipping order. So the package came with out any invoice and with out any info about who shipped it.
Shipment method was Registered Airmail.
There was no tracking updates available on websites (except that it was sent from china). I just had to have some patience  Smiley

I also noticed something else about the package! I just want to say that banggood took care of the matter and they seem to know the customs trouble in India.

Hi Prabal,

You can order them with ease, only thing is that you have to track it and once it comes to your Delhi customs, they will release a letter to your communication address stating that they need invoice copy of your order and bank statement/credit card for that particular transaction.

You can send those document via post to customs office but this will be more time taking, so better, you physically go there with the documents. They will ask you that what is inside/ all seems electronic items/nothing is written anywhere it is for hobby something like that, you can calmly say them that Sir it is totally for hobby, they will say you it contains electronic items and you need to pay 30% duty on it.
rest how you deal with the assistant commissioner customs, if your lucky he will ask you to write a application saying that all is for my personal use and not contains any electronics, then he will release them with minimum duty approx around 15%.

after that you go back to your home, as they will not give you your parcel there,Your cleared papers will go to the sub foreign post office Delhi area(that u can google). after that it will come by post to your address, where you need to pay the 15% money to the postmaster.

Things to take in mind:
1)Track your foreign tracking number and call sub foreign post office 1st and ask them the corresponding Indian parcel number for it, the foreign tracking number will not work after it goes to customs.

2) the local parcel number will be your tracking number in customs office.

3) when they ask you something at customs office: just say it is for personal use.

that is it, nothing serious, but it is bit time taking.

Here in Bangalore the above process is like it, things may differ acc to places Smiley, but here all is good, all are working good in govt offices very professionally.

regards,
Kulbhushan

hello sir.. if you want to order from banggood you need credit card. coz they don't accept payment through entropay or any other virtual card.. i recently tried to pay from entropay but my payment was rejected.. also check dx.com they also have lots of hobby stuff. and they also accept payment through entropay...

Yes that  is a problem as you have to wait for 30-days before PayPal verifies the transaction! But you have to be very careful while buying as you could get cheap quality stuff as gunnu said!
And please no 'Sir' you can address me as Himadri or Himadri Roy Hats Off

Hello everyone I am going to order circulerly polerized.  Blubeam ultra 5.8 ghz antenna set from
Bluestone airline. ....usa .....
And I am confused about which shippment method ahould I use for MY parcel which one is tristed to Delivery package to India?Huh?

And what about customs clearance to item SO far I used only banggood registered free air parcel they have Done a GOOD Job for me till now

But shipping from usa? ?? I don't have any IDEA what to do.....
I read somewhere in the Forum that if you use Services like DHL for international shipping you aslo need to pay custom?? ?  Duty while in Free register china mail no customs ....

SO friends guid me which method I should choose ....and preferably I don't want to pay customs duty because ....cost of bluebeam ultra is 65 dollers yup I know it is heavy ...all suggestions are welcomed thanks

Hello Everybody,
@ Mkartik :-Hello Kartik,
Well as you want to order a Equipment That is related to Transmitting and Also as the Bluebeam antenna is 5.8 Ghz well I suggest you to make the Payment through Paypal first if Paypal is not available no problem its okay if you do the payment with you Debit card now The Shipping Method Well you can use Registered Airmail or EMS Speedpost/FedEx or UPS. Well you will be thinking why I am not suggesting DHL ?? Well because every shipment Containing Things related to R/C gets detained/Stuck In Customs coming by DHL. People are facing this problem after The New Government Rules and Regulations.Well Chances are there it may Get stuck in FedEx or any other way and if you talk about the customs duties as the value is less the duties will be less only in very rare cases it goes high. Also If its shipped by Speedpost /Registered Airmail chances are there that duties may not be imposed only. But yes customs clearance can take a little bit of time in this Methods so now its totally depend on you. And Yes as the shipment will be coming from US you can track it in USPS Website also if it comes by Speedpost/Registered Airmail like if the shipment is travelling in US You will get to know its whereabouts in US By USPS and as soon as its dispatched to Destination Nation Country i.e India then by  IPS Web Tracking you will be able to track your shipment to know its status. And yes can I know what shipping method is That website offering ??
Regards,
Aman.

Hello Everyone,
@ Mkartik :- Hello Kartik,
Well See chances are like 50-50 % as many Parcels Gets Stuck and may does not but yes 90 % of The Radio Tx/Rx does gets stuck and as Customs require WPC NOC and as you know its really hard to get WPC NOC so People send it back and get their money back but in This case its a Antenna so I think it should get cleared I cant guarantee but I think it should get cleared. Now About the USPS Shipping well ask the Seller To Register the Parcel with Signature Delivery Confirmation I think there are Extra Charges for that but in that It will become a Registered Consignment same like Registered Airmail Coming From Banggood I understand USPS Shipping rates are really high.
Well One more option is there that Is the Antenna available in LHS ( Local Hobby Shops)??
Regards,
Aman.
