Having been away for 15 months, I recently enquired about one of the regulars at Bhondsi field Gurgaon, Mr. Naveen Kumar and was stunned to learn he passed away some months ago due to a heart attack.

RIP dear Naveen, a thorough gentleman, and a passionate flyer

He's in the peach shirt with the Futaba Neck-strap

Some of you may remember Clarence Pinto, National Model Manufacturing, Mumbai.

In the 70s he and Sharma Models were the only others besides India Hobby Centre manufacturing Aeromodels and accessories. The main buyer of course was the NCC, which continues to be the largest buyer in India.

My first National kit was the Ashwini glider, a built up Balsa about 40"or so span. I bought it from "the dry cleaner shop ahead of Hobby Centre on Princess Street Bombay :D"

I later became friends with Clarence, and flew together with him in the late 80's at Godrej, Vikhroli. Bought quite a few kits from him - Orange Box, QB 20, Avimoto (the first ARF in India, 25 Nitro, Fibreglass fuse and balsa sandwiched foam wing)

Called him today to say hello, but his wife informed me he passed away two years ago of a kidney infection which developed complications (he was diabetic but not aware)

A gentleman, a flier, a genial helpful man.

RIP old friend

Good to know this.
He must be proud to see from above how aeromodelling has progressed in India.
Just knowing such a person who  promoted the hobby in the early stages would have been an honour. Thanks for sharing with us Sanjay Sir.

May your soul rest in peace Clarence Sir :salute:

Though i did not have the good fortune to know Mr Pinto, as a fellow aeromodeller i share the sense of loss with his family. May he have long duration flights, without engines, but with angels.

If he used to fly at Godrej, Vikhroli, perhaps he knew one Mr NJ Kite, an even older aeromodeller, who was, if memory serves, a GM in Godrej, and who used to live on the 6th floor of El Cid building, and was proud to drive an Ambassador.

Though he had never met me before, he made a gift to me that i still retain. From 1972.
Which affected not only my aeromodelling,
But my very perception
of the power of a gift

Sorry, Sanjay sir,
Didn't mean to hijack this thread, but the heartfelt feeling is similar.
Thank you for reminding us to remember old friends.

Will start a new thread if there is a response from anyone who remembers stuff like this.

Oh. Shocking...

We had a meeting at his home (Mr Pitoo's Home) in 2002 when i just passed out ncc. Very jolly person came to station to pick me up in his vintage lamreta scooter. I went to buy kits of static model at his place for my first project of school students. It was a first and last meeting with him and after what ever discussion we had it was on phone. His support was par excellence. You just ask for the stuff and you will get it. No advance no question and every conversation ends with "All the best". Age badho accha karo.

I made many models of national during college days.

RIP Mr C R J Pintoo  :salute: :hatsoff:

Today we lost a champion of this hobby. Probir Ganguly of Lotus Hobbies (http://lotushobby.com/). When he came into the scene, things were very expensive. Hobby belonged to only the high and mighty, those who could get stuff from US and UK. Probir Da !  Made desi stuff (True Make in India stuff), sold things at rock bottom prices, he basically turned the whole thing on its head. Air NCC benefited the most. So did many Air Defence units of Indian Army, they got very cheap models to shoot at and break. His aluminium Foil covering was unique and most sold item.

May he fly with other modellers in the heaven.

RIP Probir Da !

PS
Whenever this thread pops up ! i feel sad and heavy !! :(

My return to Aeromodelling in 2006 after many years was made possible by Probir Ganguly.
Got my Hitec, first electric motor, lipo etc in Dec 2006 from him.
Still have the bill in my wallet.
Will preserve in his memory...

RIP Probir-da

I first dealt with him in 2001, after I returned from the Middle East after 10 years away from the Hobby. I was amazed by the range he had. He had developed in India a wide range of accessories: I bought so many that I still have some left over! Things like clunk tanks, landing gears, pushrods, linkage stoppers, glow boosters etc. all made locally of a uniformly good quality. He was easily accessible over phone, and patiently would respond to my endless questions. When I left India again n 2003 I fell out of touch, but on my return 2 years ago contacted him, and he was just the same : always helpful.

RIP; my heartfelt condolences to the family.

Srinivas

We all knew him as Cheenu, second generation aeromodellor, Mode -1 flier, liked to fly pattern and less reckless flying (unlike me) friend and a brother. All aeromodellors of Kolkata would know him, his contribution to the hobby was immense. I lost him yesterday, Our community lost him yesterday.

It was high sugar followed by kidney malfunction that took him to heavenly abode. we were chatting on whatsapp till couple of days ago.

During this meet at Kharagpur  (http://www.rcindia.org/rc-events/rc-meet-at-a-disused-wwii-runway-near-dudkundi-village-kharagpur-kolkata/) 5 years ago he got his giant scales there. Did some good flying there. He is there standing right behind me (see pic). Too young to go away

He is the one flicking the engine in the video

Fly free Cheenu

I remember Mr Nagar’s large (perhaps not quite 3m, but it did appear large to my young eyes then) RED high aspect ratio sailplane (Graupner Cirrus?) with a pylon mounted OS PET 09 that took it really high...
From 40-50 years ago.

Ajit Nagar, if you happen to see such posts, please tell Mrs VK and daughters (and grand children) that there are people who remember him fondly, despite not having met him in over 30 years!

I remember too, having located your father’s house in the Begumpet Indian Airlines colony, and met you. You had a very short crew cut then. Must have been 1974...
