or at least thinking of it.

Hi guys,

I'm 47, based in Bangalore. 30 years ago, I was very active in this hobby. I would build and fly gliders, control line, and finally a 2 channel RC plane. The '2' channel was a big mistake of course, but I didn't know better. I would fly at Mahalakshmi Race Course and Juhu in Bombay.

Building the planes and repairing them took often more time than flying. Had a 'diesel' and a 'glow plug' engine. Don't know what is currently available. Planes were all built at home of course. There were no ready to fly planes available. It was all great fun, and I still remember the excitement when I first used heat shrink for the wing surface instead of tissue and glue [or whatever - can't remember].

Joined medical college and lost touch completely.

Want to get back now, but unsure again if I have time. My other hobby is cycling, which takes up a large part of my free time.

Having said that I would love to start with an entry level electrical RC plane. Will post questions after going thru all the beginner posts here. Have started reading and everyone recommends a good radio. So, just currently what 5 or 6 channel would you guys recommend?

Deepak

PS: Is this forum Tapatalk friendly?

Edit: I see the word 'pupil' often. Are there teachers in Bangalore?

HYDRO PLANER.....

Deepak Sir, its a very happy news..welcome to RCI.. after 30 years.. its the proof of the gift by God.. it is not possible to hide the gift if we gifted by God.. and sharing some of my humble experience with you.. once, aero modelling was considered as the most expensive hobby.. but today its all changed.. not changed but changed in a way of amazements.. most amazing factor is the radio sets.. the radio sets once costs 30,000 Rs/- now are available within 10,000 Rs.. and some value for money sets are still available within a 3000/Rs.. and works fine and for years.. the second one is the motor factor.. all become ECMs insted of MCMs.. are far capable than predecessors.. so, here at present we can enter in hobby within a 7000/- to 10000/-Rs easily.. with full fledge.. and one more request, is learned from my own experience.. instead of a two or three channel aircraft, please go for a full control aircraft with 4 channel.. it will be more exciting, easy to control, and stable.. with our finger tips.. a set of aileron makes a dramatic diference in control.. and as a flyer theres no chance of panic with you.. making methods of RC planes also changed a lots.. now balsa is not much used as faom, carbon materials ,fiberglass are in ... and you can also make good stable light weight airplanes from corrugated sealed plastic sheet known as coroplat or as sunpack.. Hats Off Hats Off Hats Off

Deepak,

Our stories are so very similar. I used to make and fly chuck gliders and rubber powered planes while in school and that was way back in the early `80s. Then came the studies and then medical college. Lost everything to books. Finally in 2009 at the age of 41 took up the the hobby again. I've been at it now for 2 1/2 yrs with all guns blazing. I fly nearly 45 Sundays a year. SPADs, High wing, low wing, Mid wing, pattern planes, Glow and petrol engines, 6 and 10 channel transmitters........ That's my inventory..

Welcome back and hope u have a great time.

Happy Flying Doc

Welcome Deepak Sir. People fly at Hoskote (BEML Coloney, 2KM on the road going left from Old Madras Highway, 200 mts before the Toll plaza).

There are many people flying there and would be happy to help you out. There are few very senior flyers there like Mr Devraj, Alexander, Sanjeev Shah etc. You never know you might have met him if you started Aeromodleing in Bangalore back then.

The hobby has become much affordable and available with ARF, Radios and Electric Motors. I would advise you to get hold of a good Radio and a Foam Glider like Easy Star/Sky Surfer/AXN Floater. Once you get back your hold (Radios have become up 18 channels now, 6-9 channels one are as cheap as 5-6000.)

We have a bunch Old School Balsa Builder (I design / Modify on AutoCAD and get the plan cut on Balsa/Ply using Laser CNC). So once you flying, you can build models or buy Glow powered ARF (locally available in Bangalore)

Flying Doc,

Nice to see another Doc here. My only worry is that I should not get back my crazy addiction and give up cycling. Cycling has made me lose more than 15 kgs and I love it. When I was a kid I used to stay awake all night sometimes building the planes. Completely addicted.

RCPilot,

I started with a 4300 but it was the usual mistake. MTB when I was not doing off road. I learn't about bikes later at http://www.bikeszone.com/ and sold the MTB. Don't want to make the same mistakes here so am going to read before buying.

Now I have a Pl-X Carbon frame which I built with SRAM Red/Force, Easton wheels, a Surly Long Haul Trucker, and a Bike Friday Folder. Love cycle touring and road cycling. In fact leaving on Friday for 3 weeks of road cycling in Italy.

Ujjwaana,

I already read about the Hoskote ground [from the 'gems' link here]. I cycle thereabouts often, to Kolar and back. Next time I'll drop by. I was aeromodelling in Bombay earlier, not Bangalore.

Yes, I was also thinking of something like the Easy Star and a good 6 Ch radio but am confused between the cheaper ones and a 'good' one like Futaba. Also, I find the Futaba out of stock in most places?

Rcpilotacro,

Just went thru the entire thread on your hanger. WOW is all I can say.

No route in Italy. This is kind of 'hub and spoke' and not touring. One week in central italy, one week near Bologna, and a week in the north. Down with a viral so not yet got on the bike. Just been doing some hiking, maybe from tomorrow back on the bike.

Been in bed all day just surfing this forum.
