Post by: rcpilotacro on April 13, 2013, 07:00:51 AM
Starting this thread on the request of Mr KK Iyer from Indore, Anyone can add people who have rendered Yeoman service to RC field particularly in this sub continent, what the heck on this planet.  Would invite Mr KK Iyer to do the honors first.

Couldn't have thought of a better Opener!

I've had the good fortune of interacting with Uncle Kumar a number of times. My first ever RC Trophy (Brave Borderer Boat) for accurate sailing, was handed over to me by him.

Fantastic gentleman! R.I.P.

My nomination would be Mr. Tapan Dutta, erstwhile employee of India Hobby Centre. A street smart jack of all trades who convinced a lot of youngsters to join the hobby with his "its easy and you can do it" attitude. I am what I am due to his initial guidance and support.

Mr CSA Gupta from Chennai,in his 70's and still a very active flier. He is my teacher's, teacher's, teacher. Wishing him to continue his activities.
With a lot of grief I heard that Mr Ashok Bhole of Pune passed away in Feb 2013. A very fine gentleman and a good friend. May his soul rest I peace.

Either no one sees this thread.
Or
Not many qualify for the Hall of Fame.
I could nominate myself, but I have not contributed anything for over 30 years.
So I will nominate another.
A guy known only as Anwar.
Anyone heard of him?
Runs a site which is probably the biggest contribution to Indian aeromodelling in recent years.
Anyone would like to second the nomination?

Last nominee from me for today.
V V Nanda, Secretary & CI of IITK Gliding Club for many years.
It was under his leadership that I could start the aeromodelling club in IITK in 1978/79, even though I was not from IITK! And take IITK Teams to SMAE comps at Safdarjung
I was however a member of the Advisory Council.
He was the guy who got us the funding to get the first OS 20s, obtained from USA by one of the Aero BTechs, maybe Ijaz Parpia or Adnan Merchant or .... Who was the guy who went to Boeing.... Too long back to recall
Mr Nanda used to claim he had instructed one Mr Rajiv Gandhi, which we never believed.
Till the same Mr Gandhi came to IITK and gave Mr Nanda a hug in front of the whole crowd!
Some of the Aero BTechs, especially the glider fliers may remember

Thanks to Superman, otherwise known as Gusty (Gutsy?) for starting this and adding pics. How did you find Nanda? IITK archives?

Abhay, i've phoned Ravi

Next nominee.(Christopher) John DeCruz. One time Manager of IHC Delhi, who made IHC like a club.with members like the younger Mr Gandhi. One time maintainer of Indian Airlines IBM mainframe in Chennai. Mentor to dozens of young aeromodellers (since 1968!). This is what he looks like now (photo published without permission)

About 30-40 years back, for some reason I didn't have my C/L stunter to compete against Ravi Kumar (maybe even Kalsi). I had to buy a 35 size stunter, with engine and Ureely on loan, for Rs 500, from Mr VK Nagar. Next day I returned it. Mr Nagar said 'a deal is a deal. No refund. But if you don't want the airplane, take something else for 500 bucks.' So I took the Merco 35. Used it till 1992. Packed since then. Mr Nagar may remember the year of manufacture. Here's the pic.

That person DOES NOT belong here. PLEASE do not debase the sanctity of this thread by including him on the same platform as Uncle Kumar. I insist. Please don't make a mockery out of this thread.

Mr Iyer, i dont know whoever you are, but please make a note "each individual may not be knowing everybody." Neither anyone of us is so famous(atleast in RC), to be known by all.
Each person has his own rolemodel. For me its someone different, for you it might be someone else.

If you want the method of voting as said here:
But to be officially inducted into the Hall, 3/5/20/100 supporting msgs should be reqd.

Im sure you will end up only with 2-3 names..

Can you pl set a standard?
And although you enjoy freedom of speech in this country, you have no right to insult anybody here..
I personally understand the "standard" of person by his forum reputation..

I have no idea why I was even mentioned in this thread. I am a software guy, who happened to fly a few RC helis actively for like couple of years. That DOES NOT, in any way, qualify me for anything (let alone any "hall of fame").

I admit that I have spent a lot of hours getting this forum in the current shape, but I would use that only as an excuse to suggest people like Sushil Anand from Mumbai to be added to this list. I have never met him... but I have been a silent witness to a lot of good that he has done to members on this forum, and I have always heard about his activities from members before this forum came alive.

Steve WMD, of outerzone.co.uk
Pl see his site. And his Praise page.
Initially only oldies may appreciate, (many respondents are over 60)
but newcomers may recognise historical importance of his work.
Most amazing is that he is probably not even an aeromodeller.

Will anyone who has seen the site second the nomination?

I think the last post is exemplary. It matters not how good a flyer or modeller you are - if you are willing to share in return for nothing and if you have the enthusiasm to teach 50 kids how to make a paper plane, you deserve a mention here. I second this gent.

I would also like to nominate the guys at www.parkjets.com. Many of us have benefited from their contributions and have successfully built their models.

Mr. Iyer,

I too recall Mr John de Cruz at Safdarjung Airfield, Ever a helping hand and he really had a way with engines. I am relocating to Delhi shortly and wondering if you could share his address or contact No. We used to hold him in Awe. At the same time I recall (1978-81) another gentleman by only his first name 'Pratap' Who used to fly these really big Glow (OS?) powered beauties. Mr Prataps' Piper Cherokee with John de Cruz on controls went down immediately after take off on one of our visits. I wonder if you recall him too?

Anwar with your permission I would like to add a page of "Hall of Fame" in our forthcoming souvenir after the Pinjore Event on the 18/19 Oct. 2013 and use the names mention on your forum.

Nandan Chandavarkar (https://www.facebook.com/nandan.chandavarkar)

Definitely goes in here. He has been pioneer in bringing quality Jet age to India. 2004 i guess was the watershed year for India, when Jet age in aeromodelling circuit dawned, thanks to Nandan.

Some of his achievements include, speed record, putting a jet on a glider (I guess, first time in india, again) and his philanthropic outlook to life in general and hobby in particular.  Some of the thread to visit are here
 Viper Jet (http://www.rcindia.org/gas-glow-nitro-planes/viper-jet-ready-for-test-flight/)
Test flying funjet look alike with a jet engine called BaioJet (http://www.rcindia.org/gas-glow-nitro-planes/test-flight/)
Monster Jet Glider (http://www.rcindia.org/gas-glow-nitro-planes/monster-5m-turbine-glider-ready-for-test-flight/)
Speed Record (http://www.rcindia.org/rc-maneuvers-and-skills/nandan-clocks-459-kmph-on-jet-aeroplane-model-ultra-flash/)

Someone to propose and second, please

Proposed by Gusty, seconded by flytrack, who rarely responds.
Presumably the same guy who gives away 46/55 size airplanes/seaplanes.
Handle starts with an 'X'...
No subsequent response ???

Similarly, no one to second Mark Drela?
Doesn't anyone in India know him?
He's the guy behind the 'Aerodynamics' course on EDX.
And a lot more besides.
I for one, owe him a thumb, like Eklavya...

Title: Re: RC Hall of Fame

Mark Drela has created some of the most amazing gliders. But personally I find them a little too complex to build. But yes certainly a legend in the field. His knowledge in aerodynamics may be insurmountable. I once thought of building one of his designs "supergee" but backed out.

Title: Re: RC Hall of Fame
Post by: rohitgupta322 on April 29, 2014, 11:41:03 PM
There is no doubt that Prof Drela should be in the RC hall of fame. But in addition to Prof. Drela, Prof. Selig (Applied Aerodynamics Group, UIUC) should also be in the RC Soaring Hall of Fame. He has been instrumental in developing many airfoils for gliders and sailplanes.
Eg : The Selig S 1223 Airfoil http://airfoiltools.com/airfoil/details?airfoil=s1223-il (http://airfoiltools.com/airfoil/details?airfoil=s1223-il)

Also, for those interested in the technical side of RC, Prof. Selig's team has also developed a number of 3d 6 degree of freedom RC aircraft dynamic models that can be readily simulated in the Flight Gear flight simulator.

Both Dr.Drela and Dr.Selig should be in the Hall of Fame.

However, my other concern is that there are many other notable contributors to this hobby. Should we be including all these gentlemen? or should we limit ourselves to people who have contributed to the growth of the hobby in our country?

Those who were around in the early 70s may remember the competition between Kalsi, Ravi Kumar and me, in towline glider and control line stunt.
In those circles I was known as ‘Krishnan’, or as John’s friend...

I understand he has some 1500 engines (flyingboxcar sir), flies free flight (saikat sir), indoor (glidiator sir), but I don’t know if he has any exposure to coro (sanjayrai55 sir) or adventure (rcpilotacro sir)

Guess you guys may hear from him!

Regards and a Happy New Year

I think that the cross country flight was also featured in Dharamyug the Hindi periodical that way in publication at that time.
It also reminds me of the time we tried a short cross country flight at Ranchi . That was with the pilot seated pillion on a bike. Model used was Aurora Miss World using Aurora Radio on 27 Megs

Does anyone remember this historic flight from 36 years ago? It should be re-created ! It features my 'guru": Capt Randhawa from Hyd.

If you have a better res picture, could you please email that to me?

Do you have any more details of the cross country flight at Ranchi? Can you imagine the furor the air traffic guys would have if this was tried now?

I've tried to keep track of the long distance flights and record attempts by going through old magazines. The English channel crossing by the Radio Queen (Sid Allen, 1950s, with ED Hunter diesel), the Atlantic crossing (Maynard Hill, 200x, with petrol-converted 4-stroke),...these interest me because of my work on UAVs. Diesel and petrol are the way to go for endurance. The other inspiration is the guys flying antique models in Texaco competition: 45 minute max rule, but 1 hour+ is common...bring an armchair and binoculars. Again, diesel is the way to go for these contests.

Maynard Hill's flight was made using a modified OS running on some kind of Parafin based fuel

From memory, without rechecking,
1. OS61 FS with an OS 10 carb
2. Coleman lighter fluid or some such stuff. He did experiment for fuel economy.
3. Many prototypes. Can’t recall if 5 or 24!
4. Lost all eyesight by then?

Any of the newbies interested should look it up.
Really inspiring.

Cloeman lantern fuel, which I guess is just Kero .  I remember reading about Mr Hill setting a record of 11 odd hours of continuous soaring sometime in 60's. Come to think of it when radio, battery etc were no where near to what we are used to today

I came across this pic of Prime Minister Nehru being shown an RC airplane. It is from Aeromodeller of March 1952. I think Banerjee is still around. The plane looks like a Rudderbug.
