Hi all,

My name is Gary and I hang out on DIYdrones and RCgroups an awful lot, I have seen many people joining and contributing from India, so I thought why not try and look the other way!! It seems lots of interesting thinking is coming from India.

Hence i have joined here.

My main interest is in unmanned flight, I have a small company making very very simple UAS. http://www.yellowplane.co.uk and a UAS news blog http://www.suasnews.com

I live half the year in the UK and half in South Africa.

So anyhow in case you are wondering who on earth this chap is, you now know!!!

Regards

Gary

Hi Gary,

Good to know you & know that people across the globe are taking intrest in UAV contributions from India. Let me introduce myself. I am Raj & I am a qualified UAV pilot. I am into this bussiness of UAV for last 12 years. I have done similar developments in tactical UAV(10 kms range, with real time datalnk & extendable range) in India 02 years. Presently I fly for international companies across the globe.
If you are interested in Indian market for these products we can take this discussion further.

Thanks guys, no I am very aware that we tend to look towards America for the lead and that might be a little foolish. In the UK we no have regulations and rules that allow us to fly and make money with UAS so we are ahead of the USA for a change!!!

Raj, I am sure you are very well in the loop with it all. Dorwin again thanks.

hahaha! you can say that again!
yes indeed! ample supply of booze, and maybe in some video's you may also find us Goans on the airfield wid a chilled bottle of beer!
but where as your profession goes, you may have to rethink about your last quote "what more can an aeromodeller ask for"
Wow man! I am still thinking, how you would fly a drone, how does it feel t remotely fly one of these things?
is it like a joystick game type relaxed feeling or is it the "adrenaline gushing" feeling??

Well Dorwin, when I am at flying I folw the principle " Bottel to Throttel 8 hrs". WE are also carefull about it during aeromodel flying, the party begins only after final landing. Hmmmmm about the adernaling gushing I would say yes indeed it is the same feeling, but it is quite a serious game, loads of checks & procedures to be followed. But it is definetly fun.

Hello Gary,

I am just curious to know your UAS setup. It might be helpful if I were to design one.

1, What sort of uplink/downlink frequencies do you use?
2, Are the electronics custom designed / commerical / open source ?
3, Any special features that make your setup stand out?
4, Which model aircraft do you use? Any reason/suggestion on this would be helpful.

I have quite a few questions going on my mind - esp, on the stabilization/navigation part.. but lets just start with the above..

Majraj and Praveen,

Since you guys are also in this field of work, please feel free to add your views as well.

izmile ,first of all sorry for late reply!
1) Frequencies depends upon of your choice coz today if any one designs UAS he will definetly implement security like FHSS or DHSS or may be even advanced (once israeli  friend told they use new advanced technology for security) .
2)It depends upon your strength , do you think if Boeing is going manufacture UAS,they are going  to buy electronics commercially from outside ,not a chance ! same way if i and u going to join hands n make a UAS ,definetly we will go for ready made market junk!
3)even though some features are common in every UAS system ,but every system will have its own unique quality from other, may be in electronics, opticals,or airframe etc.
4)for this i cant help you, airframes are designed keeping many aspects in mind like aerodynamics, payload, duration, expendability, how easy to assemble ,how easy to manufacture n so on!

at last coming to main thing on UAS is Autopilot it will have IMU,gyro ,gps etc etc inbuilt and very light in weight ,but not in price ,one of the best is Micropilot n picolo
Micropilot will cost you anything around $5000-$15000
picolo same price !(recently asked them they told $14000 for one autopilot n payload)

Praveen,

Micropilot is much better than Picolo, but there is something much, much better avalaible in market which is much easier to handle & with quite advanced features than micropilot. Infact Micropilot is following it's footsteps.

Thanks guys. As a first step, I am planning to build something for long range FPV. Then slowly add on other features to it. Will keep you all posted.

Could you please let us know the name of the product that you are referring to. Or is that classified?

Ya. I have been hanging around a couple of times... but its too much information for a starter. I am getting some samples for gyros and accelerometers.. lets see how it shapes up..I guess, it might take ages to finish with my limited time for this project.
