DIY For Life!

Hello Fellow RC Enthusiasts,
I am trying to make a hovercraft with a CPU fan blade mated to a brush motor. It uses a 3.175mm shafted brush motor...No load speed 15000rpm @ 12 volts... You can try other 3.175mm shafted brush motors also...Here I am staying away from brushless motors...

It is optional to attach fan grills but I recommend doing so. For making the base I purchased a chart paper sized sheet of Mountboard (Dense cardboard) for Rs 20/-. For making a strong motor mount, I used a copper backed Printed Circuit Board(a.k.a. PCB) laminate of size 4inch X 4inch. I marked an outline of the inner diameter of the CPU Fan on the PCB as it will be an air intake path for the Lift.Drill holes on inner side of the marked circle as we have to cut it out and then file it to size...Modellers are free to choose their own way of doing so.There are four 4mm diameter holes on the fan body for mounting.Mount the PCB on the Fan body..it will serve as a mounting flange..then mount it to your craft.. My craft size is 11 inches by 17 inches... I reinforced the Hoverboy IV mountboard base with Icecream sticks as I observed that it was bending at some places. Use hot glue to stick the sticks together..it is great!

Take a garbage bag...seal the open end after trimming it to your desired size...there should be some overhang i.e. the skirt should be measuring larger than the base dimensions.. Attach it to the base using thin double side tape. Cut some holes about 1.5-2 inches apart near the periphery of the craft...In my case,I had left too much overhang hence the masking tape along the periphery to trim the excess overhang... After about 4-5 hours of testing I got a result which is unbelievable...The photos show the craft lifting 2 pcs 12volt 1.2 Sealed Lead Acid battery weighing 500 gms each and one 6 volt 7 Ah Sealed lead acid battery weighing 1250 gms... The craft can hover over the steel joint of the glass counter of my workshop with ease but in actual use it will never be subjected with so much payload...I did this just for testing purposes...

Testing out a similar motor with two 2s 2200mAh lipo packs in parallel...It ran for about 35 minutes...then the current started to drop as the packs got discharged...this time I used fibreglass as a base as the earlier mountboard base got soaked with water when I tested its hovering abilities on water...It did hover well...now planning to use 3mm foam/ or 5mm/8mm coroplast for making base as the fiber base is heavier than all standard model building materials...skirt will be made from umbrella cloth...forward thrust system will be two 4x3 inch props powered by two 2.3mm shafted 12 volt 25000 RPM brush motors...rudder will also be changed to 3mm foam or 4/5mm coro sheet instead of PCB laminate as used earlier so I hope there will be a bit of weight reduction...
