Guys This is A R Tripathy from IIT BOMBAY(aerospace engg.) . I am intrested in building a rc spy plane which will be powered by high resolution cameras , infrared sensor cameras ,GPS etc . I am scintifically very strong in this project but am a new comer for the rc world . So please help me in developing the various mechanical parts of this project , like which servo,gyro,motor/engine,battery,radio transmitter & reciever etc do i chose ? The plane will operate by a specially designed software programming in a laptop connected with a USB port to the radio reciever . Roughly the the model must be less than 2000 grams . It will send live aerial frames or videos of the ground . this sophisticated model will hopefully be adapted by Indian military force . So please take a step to help our defence system .

Well if you have any problems or doubts related to the aerodynamics or aerial motion of your model then I will be happy to be asked . Cool

Hi ,
I will recommend this combo as below :

1) Air Frame Multiplex Easy Cub http://cgi.ebay.in/RC-PLANE-MULTIPLEX-EASY-CUB-LATEST-BEGINNERS-DELIGHT_W0QQitemZ150344288887QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_203?hash=item230137ca77&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A30

2) Motor : Turborix 1000 KV Brushless Out runner 2836 http://cgi.ebay.in/Turborix-1000rpm-v-222w-D2836-RC-Brushless-Motor_W0QQitemZ110372819931QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_203?hash=item19b2bb93db&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A30

3) Servos : RCFORALL 16 gms servo
4) Prop : 10 x 5

This has been flown autonomous , but I cant tell you where and how on account of professional ethics  and was found to be  a phenomenally  stable platform.

VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

hello sir
what i would like to suggest is give us the exact estimate of your planes weight, dimensions and the design.
when i say weight i mean all the HD cameras IR cameras GPS unit and the planes model weight the microprocessors if any and all other equipment. after that we will suggest you optimal servos (you must use metal gear ones) gyros (futaba GY series would suite you)  now battery is the main component because all your camera's will swivel using servos i believe and transmitting the live video and all those. i believe battery weight would constitute 1/3rd of the weight. i believe 2kg will be very less estimate as you need to make the model out of fiberglass or balsa, foam or depron will be too light to support the weight. So first thing to do is get us the exact weight of your spy electronics and the material for the build we will help u i all the ways we can. i tooo live in MUMBAI give me a call at 9833036737. i am interested in your topic and would love to help in whatever way i can. Please don't buy anything now until every aspect is finalized. Hope this helps

Sai uncle do you think the easy cub will be able to house all the hd spy and live video transmitters other than the regular rc stuff he might need to house a big battery pack too and custom building a model would be better i think if the weight would not change i recommend the 3.5 kg thrust motor from sai uncle as the plane might have to do a lot of tight maneuvers and the gps system and everything else so i think a new model could be better

Hello lucky,
sometime back I had seen a plane similar to the one you intend to make in the  DISCOVERY TV Channel's FUTURE WEAPONS programme. If I remember correctly it was designed and manufactured by an Israel company. I am giving the points I remembered.
1.Since it is a spy plane, it got to be silent and that means a non-powered plane. It is a thermal sail plane.
2.It looks like a large sail plane with about 4 metre wing span. It has a large capsule like cockpit at the nose, a fibreglass boom and fibreglass V-Tail. The wing is detachable and a 2 or 4 piece one for easy transport.
3.It is launched using a Hi-start like a conventional thermal sail plane.
4.It does all the functions you intend to incorporate in your model. All the equipment is installed in the capsule at the nose. It sends real time video,Data etc to the controller which looked like a custom made laptop with specialised software.
5.I think it gains altitude automatically whenever it finds thermals. I don't remember whether it fly by itself or controlled by an operator.
6.It returns to the base automatically when a switch is turned on in the Tx.
7.It has a unique landing system. It does not land like a conventional sail plane. On approaching the base a hatch in the belly of the plane opens and pushes out an un inflated air bag which when exposed to the air currents infates like a large air pillow and the plane comes down vertically very slowly.
8.It requires no special training to operate this plane. Even a first timer can operate it.

That is all I remember about that spy plane.

Good Luck,
RAO.

Hai Mr Rao I used to watch "future weapon" at my school times so I have missed the programme . Well this programme is based on the future defence systems of countries like US,UK,Canada,Israel etc . So I want to know it was really included in the Israelee militant or not , so that I can have their help from their website or officially .
Thanks for your information Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Hi ,
Looking at the Photos of the drone I am reminded a lot about MR MOSS the IIT B Tech fest winning Glider .

In many ways the structure looks similar , more like  expanded on the same simple basic platform.

Looking at the pic. I think  a similar air frame with scaling up of course  should be suitable subject to the payload of course .

Here are few pics of MOSS
