I built mine back in 2005 when it was a craze & branded brushless motors were hell expensive with a very few Chinese manufacturer made these motors at that time. Please see the pics of my CD Rom brushless i built 5 years back & yes i paid $60 for a motor controller at that time.. Grin complete hand wound copper wire built from scratch.

HAI,
Rajath
Thrust not only relates with rpm of bldc it also relates with which propeller u r using its pitch .there is a detail some were in this link http://www.bavaria-direct.co.za/models/faq.htm that u can increase the rpm by reducing the no of windings and increase torque by increaseing windings.one thing is sure that these BLDC motor r light weight and can produce enough rpm and thrust to make things fly.for understanding the basic of propeller go to this link http://www.rc-airplane-world.com/propeller-size.html

terrors of skies and oceans....

hai Friend..its too easy to make a powerful brushless motor from an scraped CPU fan, and you only need a simple circuit, with IC 555, along with CD 4020, with 4, or 6 MJE , or TIP 3055, or BD 679 transistors, to power it, and a little rewoks on coil..then WROOOMMMMM....can adjust the speed, can brake and reverse...so i will post a detailed article here , its too simple, effective and only drops MA in work...but poerfull and high RPM...soon with video...now i am in a little bussy...will be with you...a motor from an old VCR also great...but because of its size a gyroscopic effect may occur in aero models...

CPU fan is a brushless motor.. The speed controller is built into it so there are only 2 wires coming out for the power supply.. Anyway can somebody give some details on how this is done? I have some old drives lying around..

One of the source for Strong magnets is the CD Rom itself. In the lens assy you can find 2nos of Strong magnets.
Try to use them. I have not tried myself but feel that there power will be enough for converting the CD Rom Motor to RC Motor. Drawback is that you need many CD Roms. You can get 2 Magnets per CD Rom.

Best way is buy a new brushless motor rather than making one, better performance..

Its OK in buying but the fun and thrill of making will be lost. In RC it is Fun and thrill which keeps us intact with the hobby.

You may consider rewinding the stator to match your needs.
How much poles is that stator, and How many magnets in stock rotor ?

My 20A ESC doing well on this, but still can produce only low thrust with its stock winding.
