Title: ornithopter
Post by: michi on May 04, 2012, 04:17:51 PM
maximum flight time achieved= 4 sec
wing-beat per second (approx)= 10
At the max power, it could attain only level flight.
The wing-loading appears to be the problem.
Have prepared new configuration with a greater wing area. hoping to work on it soon again.

ornithopter flies by flapping its wing. I have worked on mono-wing (bird, butterfly like) and had great times. Thought to try out insect-model. this model's wing pair i.e; fore and hind wing pair flap has 90 degree phase difference i.e; when the fore wing has up-stroke, the hind pair goes down.
stroke angle- 30 degree(approx)
body frame is broom stick!! light n strong enough to withstand torque n tensions.
power- rubber (catapult variety)
glad u guys like it. please be specific about the details you need. I ll be happy to share..

Good One,
Just make another little Big.
And put off the ribs of the wing if it's small to reduce the inertia of the wings.
Flapping will be increased, and may fly well.
Please check.

I personally feel this would be hot topic in near-future. Today, we can see too many peple are running behind DRONE, UAV, MULTIROTER like projects, but I did not seen any engeneering student asking in this forum how to build an Ornithopter. I strongly believe that development in this flying machine Ornithopter will surely lead us to proof for PUSHPAK VIMAN of Our holly RAMAYANA [please experts- ALLOW me believe (something) little my self cause i seen a few seniors here giving thier suggestions   in CRITISIZE WORD. Even other seniors/ experts also don't advising them to use polite words- for suggestions, where (new) members are wrong]

The build log, spec, method to assemble, material used. I had come in contact with one indian guy who many years back flawn his own "DIY" ornithopter.

there are many videos of beautiful micro-size((?)don't know exact word) on you tube.

@vc: in gandhi basti area... what about you? I hardly hear about aero-modelling events around
here save for the only event held by the NE aeronautical college b4 last year. They didn't had any category for free-flight model! do you know any group around here?

That event was a good joke! Sending you a PM, lets talk tomorrow.

@PiyushI : thanks for the encouragement. I am also of the opinion that ornithopter will be hot topic in the future in the field of surveillance and micro uav since it has quality of both fixed wing and rotating winged aircraft. moreover it can blend into environment more easily than the conventional micro uav by mimicking shape of birds or insect.
And above all, it is an interesting hobby in its category..

@vc: it was ..hahaha, I came with my free flight rubber powered model (not ornithopter). but couldn't present my model because there were no category or they forgot mine! couple of students and defence personnels got interested though!

MICHI,
The plane is good looking, but foe stability, either give dihedral or fix the wing upper than fuselage.
You will get more stable flight.
Now, just play with pitch angle of the prop and rubber thickness. You get an good GURUs there. GOOD LUCK.
