VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

hey guys i study in dav school and the dav school worldwide have a projects meet in every october named khoj.

every year we get topics based on the class this year we have got space shuttle

each school sends one project last year too i was selected for a project on fire disaster and management

the vtol is going to be the highlight for the event but the topic otherthan that given to us is space shuttle

the project should be a complete package with models explanation presentations and working models too

then the judges evaluate the projects looking into each aspect

can u guys help me design a complete project package for this topic .

i was thinking of first explaining the basc concept behind the conventional space shuttle detailed explanation of the working of the conventional spacecraft by building a model which could fly as well as i could open it up and show them its inner workings

i would also like to conclude the project with a new space craft design very much econimic that a middle class family can afford. and this one i will make it a working that means real one.

now i need all your help i can get guys also for the new designs can you give me some ideas/designs so i can modify them and make on

amd please do suggest the changes i need to make in the project.

and by the way from my previous experiences till now no flying equipment has been practically shown in this event. other than some big rc fellows with their trex700 just showing off but this time we will have the vtol there too

I am a Corogamist!

Neat build. Was it from a plan or your own original design? In any case, it looks very neat.  Clap Clap However, I have some concerns on the structural integrity of the design. Looks too flimsy for the wing and the fuselage. Should be fine for simple flying but if you do some high G maneauvers its better to reinforce it.

I am sure, flying this one is going to be tricky with a pusher. You need to have enough airspeed to get it in for landing or for any other maneauvers. IOW, landings are going to be hot!

well it was from the rcpowers plans ismile bhaiya but with extreme mods and the size has been doubled. as for the reinforcement i have put 5 cf rods two for the wing one the vertical stab and two for body. i still think i need some more. this model as such is a glider (as are all sts's of nasa) hence i beleive it will require a bit more speed than the normal ones. but with the speed brake and flaps i think it should do the trick

actually it was easier for me as the plans from rcpowers give the position of the cg.
wait this picture shows the position of cg

http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu71/Pikle6/shuttle/120920092026-1.jpg

to check just hold the plane at the cg with your thumb and correct by adding clay or whatever you wish

its a bit difficult with big size models like this one

VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

hey guys i am just tied up a bit concerned about my planes thrust and weight
the total thrust at full throttle is 2.7 kg and convert to newton you get 2.6 but i took it as 2.4 n just to take in some default error
i have a precise model in fms in which i can put in the value i want

final weight = 2.6 kg but i took it as 3 for safety

i put in

3 edf at full throttle that is 2.4 newton and 3 kg mass and it takes off at 5 m

3 edf at half throttle that is 1.2 newton and 3 kg mass and it takes off at 10-15 m

2 edf at full throttle that is 1.6 newton and 2.5 kg mass (after reducing battery weight) and it takes off at                              7  m

and the model has the robotic arm which when removed the weight becomes 2 kg from 2.6 kg (original)

please please please please please help

tell me the right scenario and other suggestions

the pics and video will be up on Saturday

The model is big enough to accommodate 3 EDFs ?  Where will you attach them all ?

Would love to see a pic of the robotic arm !

Good work Subu  Clap, would definitely look forward to seeing a flying Video of this one .

I remember seeing many of your builds here like the easy star , raptor etc  but   seem to have missed the flight Video's of all of these , have seen many of you Videos like Kharghar field , unpacking of various parcels etc . But I seem to have missed most of the flight Videos except the MOSS flown by Pramod.

Look forward to this Video.

oh another possible reason why i don't have many videos is i  fly alone these days in kharghar and no body else to take a video. as far as unboxing and other things are concerned i have my sister or sometimes even i myself video them. hmm i should opt for a helmet cam

SO THE FINAL PART OF THIS PROJECT

THE SUCCESS TO SAY WAS MIXED

let me begin the story

in the display room the only working space shuttle in the whole exhibition was ours. ours could fly and do all other stuff the real one was meant to do. the judgement went on very well and judges loved it and even the host school was saying that our project would win. we even did our flight demo there and still the prize went to a school with a stationary model and i saw that model it was no competition for ours but still...... Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

our school authorities even filed a complaint and our suggestion book was filled with 347 entries each exclaiming the fact that they had never seen such a model which could fly and after we gave them the demo they were even more overwhelmed.

the next two days i cried and more crying followed thats why i was not active all these days. it hurts when u are not even recognised for your extreme hardwork Cry Cry Cry

anyway the part everybody was waiting for the pics here u go guys

Subbu - very cool !  Thumbs Up

BTW, I hope you know by now that learning to deal with not winning everything you participate is one of the biggest lessons in life.  If you gave it your fair share, that should make you proud (positive feedback, which you got a lot, helps).
