VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

Hello to everyone in RC INDIA Smiley My name is E.V.Subramanian i live in Navi Mumbai
Sai uncle is presently the one person i have tortured for the past two months for the electronics.
rcforall has given me the greatest of support till now. on to the project well its not a college project as i am still in class X but just a project built out of curiosity. The plane is completely built. electronic testing is the part left. i have started with the thrust test to ensure my BL's had enough muscle to lift the beast off ground it was a success. pitch was not a problem. Roll and Yaw were. well the test was on the test bed with to stabilization. i have completed the tilt mechanism on the osprey an works like a breeze. now on to some mixing controls i am using Futaba GY400 for roll control of the motors that is speed increase and decrease. so roll problems out of the way. on to yaw i am using counter rotating props so it should cancel out the yaw problem anyway i have a gyro for yaw too. pitch instability has not yet arisen and when it does i shall try to put some mixing and a gyro for that. the tilt mechanism is the one big breakthrough which i finished today. actually i had 2 servo's for yaw and hover control and one for complete tilt during airplane build. but i achieved tilt yaw and hover controls by using just two servos so i got rid of the excess weight. i and my friend had invested 15000 rupees till now but there has been an increase in the budget as our school is sponsoring us with 30000 more rupees. so i am thinking of buying a 8ch 2.4 ghz airtronics radio for increased mixing in heli mode and the 72mhz 6ch radio in airplane mode. first phase testing begins on Saturday hopefully any body in navi mumbai or mumbai can join us please post for details and for lots more visit our website. the model is built out of foam and is the second test bed i the whole thing is a success we are thinking of a fiberglass body. please tell me also places in mumbai where there is enough room for flight testing in airplane mode. thank you keep the support coming and we need it. thanks

Its very impressive to see you experiementing with VTOLs at such an young age. We need guys like you at the field!.. Aeromodelling is just not buying ARFs and flying.. its just like what you do, experimenting your ideas, building your own models and innovating new concepts,. but sadly most people are buyer and flyers!...

I am quite pleased with the genius in you. Thanks to the technology and the local hobby shops that are able to feed your inventive thinking... I am kind of envious, as we, the older folks never had the equipment available back in our days...

BTW, how are you planning to stabilize your VTOL?

Keep experimenting.. and have fun!

Hi there,

First let me congratulate you on so many successful experiments and your dedication towards this build  Clap  Clap  Clap!! Been through all your posts today.. Keep up the good work.  One thing I dont understand though is your choice of 2 radios for the same plane.  If you get yourself a 8ch Airtronics, you can program it to work in heli mode / airplane mode.  Why do you need a separate 6 ch radio to use for airplane mode??  Just confused  Huh?  Huh?.. please enlighten me Wink Wink

actually i first bought a 6ch radio thinking it would suffice my needs but now my needs have increased so i am thinking of buying the 8ch mammoth by the i gave the 2 radio system a thought and thought that i would now use only the 8ch one. and as for the stabilisation i am mixing gyro controls to throttle and aileron for roll and normal gyro setup to control servo's which in turn control yaw. i will post my video by satur day to help you understand by the way thanks for supporting. one more reason for my very out of the box radio setup was that i needed to upgrade so just thought that i would try and use both

I am planning at least one scratch build (a Morback 4D VPP foam plane), as mentioned here : http://www.rcindia.org/rc-people/mohamed-ismail-from-chennai/msg141/#msg141

It is just that there are only 24 hours in any given day  Grin  Will find/make time to do it soon !

I have also decided on the same plane.  Got the servos, the VPP setup, the double side laminated depron and everything else needed for the build!!

Time is the only constraint!! Weekdays are spent in office and weekends are totally dedicated to flying.. So no time for even thinking of building!!

Definitely.. Even I was thinking about the same thing.  I have 3 days time now.  So even if I spend a couple of hours a day, I can get the model and the servos mounted.  The motor setup, I would work out carefully!!

Yeah Ismail.. you do sound a lot like my ex-manager!! my current one is too easy going!! (as you can see from the time I spend on the forums  Grin Grin)

hi guys anybody living in mumbai who could give us a hand during testing heli mode would be appreciated. this Saturday. And please visit my website at http://sites.google.com/site/v22ospreybuildoff/.
the wing tilt mechanism as i said i have finished Saturday is the day it will all happen so hope to have the video up by Sunday morning. keep supporting guys and by the way i just forgot to mention i received the student of the year award by times of India another sign of good luck. and the director of western region has granted me the 30000 rupees to compliment the project. above all i need your help and wishes to get this beast stable and move on to the next phase of testing that is airplane mode. though the tilt mechanism is made i will first fly it like a normal plane and then on to mi-air transitioning. the transition system is built to help heli mode so now all i wait for is the coming Saturday. stay tuned guys and keep supporting  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

hey guys probably the biggest progress until we wait for the rds800 and gy401 gyros we have finished the airplane mode that is all electronics in and going to thane on probably Saturday or sunday for the big maiden flight. in this flight it will have full elevator elevon and aileron. rudder wont be added on the first flight test. next thing gyro's we have a gyro which we will be using and fine tuning to get the best stability in air. so even with no one controlling it it should be stable. was also thinking of gps if i have money left and also if i have some more payload left.

VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

also i will put in hi-definition video's and all pics available. let me mention the setup for the flight.

aileron servos - 16 gms turborix servos * 2
elevator servo - 16 gms turborix servo's * 2
rx - GWS 6ch 72 mhz
tx - turborix 6ch 72 mhz (with lots of mixing and reversing)
battery - 11.1v 850mah 3s lipo * 2
motor - 2212/10
esc - 20 amp dys *2
prop - counter rotating suitable ones i don't remember the size will check and post later
also extensions and y cables and mounts and a custom made plane

one more thing is that the elevator and rudder control surfaces were very small so we have enlargened it a bit also for the new rudder or should i just say vertical stabilizer we have two ideas either it will be a one single rudder in the center like say in a a380 kind of or it shall be the normal osprey. i think that the a380 one will give more authority but we will take up the osprey ones only and increase the surface's area. coz the rudder also needs to be mixed with ailerons for best results when that would be done we shall make the elevon just a elevator and the mix between ail and rud will do the work.

so here are the details of all the wiring in the first flight.

motors- one esc's positive lead removed and both esc's connected using y cable to ch 3
elevator and aileron servo's - 2* ail servo y cable to v-tail mixer and 2* elevator servo y cable to v- tail mixer and these plugged in on ch 1 and ch 2.

and the rest three channels i am thinking of using some kind of skids to prevent shocks on landing

and one very important thing is that i want to know how to insert spoilerons as i know what they do but don't know how to incorporate them in the plane help would be appreciated. as i want it to land gently coz i don't want to injure my components. and i just forgot to tell that gyro in this setup would not be a good idea but i think of using it at about 10% gain as i have lots of elevator and aileron throw. very minute adjustments shall be enough. please help me out in the spoilerons area as i have no exp. in that.

thanks for the help  Smiley Smiley

VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

hey guys just purchased the following items for the next version of the plane that is heli mode this will definitely take me a month to tune in all the parts. as for the model we are making a new hollow one this time with all reinforcements and all hot wire cut parts and specially made areas for our special systems.
also we have a framework that will support in case of crash. all this i knew was going to add in weight so we have gone for a motor upgrade. and the good news is we are getting a completely designed stabilization system with 3 axis built gyro's specially for the heli mode. this will custom made by siddhart bhaiya as per the requirements and also it will take time so until then we will use the gy series gyros for the three axises.

so here is the parts list oh just forgot we will star work on the model this sunday and you might wonder what happened to the airplane test bed well actually it is being kept ready so as soon as monsoon gives us a dry spell we will storm the front.

finally the list

2 x turborix 222w d2836 bl motors (with 1.5kg thrust each)
2 x 30 amp speed control
2 x metal gear servos (for tilt mechanism as i do not want to keep replacing gears)
1 x gy 401 gyro
set of counter rotating prop for the new motor
many control horns as i was lacking them
bullet connectors for the motor and esc (i have extra deans for battery)
4 servo extensions and 2 y cables

and

one more important thing i have ordered the rds8000 and it is still in customs in India and will  be released on Monday as sanjeev uncle said and will directly be shipped to me

it contains

one tx
one rx
one tx nicd
one rx nicd
charger for both
4 servos with 4kg stall torque
switch harness
extension wire and
the manual

waiting for sunday as i will start up the work on sunday.

heli guru anwar bhaiya any suggestion you might want to give me or ask anything please do so that i can solve any other mistakes also any other suggestions from any one else are also welcome.

please reply Smiley

VTOL - Vertical Take Off & Landing

hey guys massive amount of work done on this last few days
on the latest model (completely new one)

it is ready for its first air mode flight (of the model) this sunday hopefully

the reason for increase in size was ofcourse increase in budget

the sunday test setup is as follows

2*turborix 222w bl motor (keep forgetting its name)
gyro gy401 to stabilise roll and piezo to stabilize pitch
tthe tilt mech is not installed as still waiting for brackets

control surface setup

ailerons act as elevator, flaps and ailerons all in one (took me 2hrs and 20mins to set up v-tail and programme and trim and center everything from tx )

and the normal elevator is beefed up by15%

and the dual rudders also beefed up

and the biggest mod is the wing itself

as the osprey wing is under const.

the wing used is e-starter with some sanding as it was more or less like the osprey wing other than a few adjustments to the airfoil and how i got the motors installed is still a big mystery to myself

the polyhedral in the wing is reshaped to fit motor in it

the big wing mods are

the ail-ele-flaperon system
the motor mount
and the airfoil and when the model was test glided i felt like it was the easystar gliding its way through
it was a it tail heavy but i had not put battery in there so it should be fine

please guys suggest on what you do before testing your scratch built/experimental plane.

subbu

ps the gyros will be turned of first then dialed in

will try to put a pic today or tomorrow

when I am sober my heli is drunk..

try your local lathe machine operators, they usually keep aluminum rods and do the machining as well.

Or try these guys:

Nice to see an old thread being resurrected after gaps of 53 months and 10 months.

Tanmay - what dimensions and what prices? That would help us comprehend 'cheap'.

Regards.

What are the dimensions of the beams? 4 feet or 48 inches is the length, what are the width and height?
