"If it's man-made and it flies, it will crash."

Hi
I was reading around the web about DIY CNCs and am very curious to make one. The main problem I think is getting parts and fitting them.
My main requirement is a router which could cut 400x500mm area and would be 0.1mm precise. I want to cut MDF,HDF,and glass fiber.

If anyone here has experience and knows where I could source parts in India, please let me know.
Also I want to build it for as cheap as possible.

Thanks

you"ll find all the info. u need on-line, even more thats just gonna confuse us more....
If u do your research, n know what you are doing , it should be a piece of cake

you can get the NEMA stepper motors even in India now starting just from 1400inr,  motor drivers and controllers, extruder, pulleys, belts can be bought from local vendors or on-line. I don't have much idea abt water/liquid cooled cutter(drill) availavbility in India, but i'm sure it'll be there
you may need help of ur trusted carpenter or steel/iron work-men to get your frame and some others parts made.

Thats helpful, the main problem is about the moving mechanism, I dont know where to source all those parts like linear guide actuator, ball screws, etc.

Here are some things that may help:

1. Aluminium Rails - Look for aluminum vendors for construction or Aluminuim and Glass formers, those who make cabins/partitiions. Plenty across Delhi. Worst case go Chawri Bazar, it is close to the place you wish to avoid but not the place itself. Also keep in mind how will you transport back 6 ft lengths of aluminium.

2. Bearings for rails - You can get these at local electrical store, ask for 62 bearing used in fans

3. NEMA motors - Available in Dwarka, not very far from you. Mr Anil Jangra (tinycontrols). Rumble has posted link above.

4. CNC Controller - get one from Aliexpress or Ebay... Also available with Mr. Jangra in Dwarka for a decent price

5. Couplings - You can make some from silicon tubing or can get from Parma and Parma at Lajpat Rai (next metro station from Chawri.. make a trip on saturday). These are expensive, about 400 each. Get the right size.

6. Power supply - You can use a SMPS or buy a professional one for higher speed, get it from Mr. Jangra; while you can easily do with a modded SMPS

7. Misc - Emergency stop switch, Self taping Screws, Bolts to act as axles for bearings, all available at Chawri.

8. Cannot comment about cutters etc, that is to requirment. I plan to use a Dremel with a milling bit (available at Chawri)

9. Threaded rods -  available at local hardware store. I easily got 10mm for X and Y axis and 6mm for Z axis.

Accumulate about 15K for the entire supplies.. Lemme know if you need any further info

10. Stepper Drivers - (separate from CNC controller) - Mr. Jangra has high quality stepper drivers but are expensive (abt 6000 per controller - quality is worth it but an overkill for hobbyists like me) - you will need one per axis. I, however, used two x L298 based drivers in parallel, with current sensing for chopper drive to get 4A for the motors. Since I do not need much speed and torque, I am ok with a 4A setup, but your requirements might be different.

I got L298 drivers from NSK electronics, two per axis and separately bought 0.5ohm 1W resistances from lajpat rai for adding current sensing capabilities to these boards for Chopper Drive...

My CNC frame is under construction, but this is the information what I could find in my ordeal.

"If it's man-made and it flies, it will crash."

great tips.
Okay here is a list of questions -
1) Nema 17 or 23? I think in chandni chowk I can get them for 1k a pc.
2) Should I follow any tutorial? If you have any please let me know. Also do you have any CAD plan designed for this CNC?
3)I read that arduino could also be used to control the CNC- there is an open source project called- shapeoko, i think you would be knowing that.
4)http://www.3dprintronics.com has some of the stuff ( I talked to their online support today)
5) How much do you think would this build cost me? And what time would it take approx?(silly ques I know)
6)Do you have a tutorial on the mechanism that I will be using to move the x,y and z axes?
7) motor drivers for stepper motor I could buy from Chandni chowk itself(lajpat rai market)

1) NEMA 17 has lesser torque. I wasnt able to find these in Chandin or Lajpat
2) I am using a modded version of the mydiycnc
3) I havent checked shapeoko but all Arduino based g-code firmware require the g-code to be copied to a usb drive or something similar and provided to the arduino. They're not live per se like with Mach3 or LinuxCNC
4) -
5) Atleast 20K
6) There are different mechanisms. Moving Gantry vs Moving table. Rails and bearings, belted, every mechanism has its own way of setting up esp the pitch of the screws etc.
7) L298 are easily available in CC. both the IC and the driver boards.

Thanks I'll start soon. I think I will buy stepper motors online if not in chandni chowk

Random The Nature of NATURE.

@girishsarwal
Hi,
I'm new to this forum. Actually, I want to know what type of rail are you going to design with what you have mentioned earlier in your post, i.e Aluminum Rail and 63 bearings for fan. I'm guessing that would be V-rail type!(picture attached) if so, is it reliable, I was thinking on building one for myself. Lastly if its another design you are talking about then could you please share it.

Thanks in Advance Salute
Jason
