I was going thro the HK website and saw these two products.

45CM Servo Lead Extention (Futaba) 26AWG (10pcs/set)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9688

40CM Servo Lead (JR) 32AWG Ultra Light (10pcs/bag)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9708

Names suggest that these servo extension leads need to be used w.r.t. their respective manufacturer's servo only, i.e.:- Futaba & JR. Is that really the case? I thought we can connect any servo to any receiver and it should work. Afterall, these extension leads help to extend the servo placement further away from the receiver.

There is a notch on the male as well as female servo connector on Signal wire(white wire) side in futaba .You can trim the notch off with a razor knife to use those in other.JR has no such thing, just plain connector. also the colour coding is different .
FUTABA:White--->Signal
JR:Orange ---->Signal

JR Servo extension are 'Universal' as they fit all (Futaba, Sanwa, Spektrun, Hitech other brands) Reciever/Servos. Futaba has a notch and is specific to Futaba Rx/Servos (you may break the notch and make it like JR).

Since you are in Bangalore, you may get much better quality (22AWG) 'Twisted' extension locally from RC Dhamka at almost same price :

http://www.rcdhamaka.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=89&products_id=775

Please add shipping cost for the Hobby King extension, which would be no less than Rs 60+, before refuting my comparison.

I recommend twisted extension over flat ones, specially when longer one needed, as they are much resilient to EMI than the sleek Flat cable one. These EMI often induces servo Jitters.

The 'Crimping' method is treacherous, and you would never know when your 'Crimping' is bad to give just that 1-2 second break during crucial moments.

I have brought a Indian Rupees 1200+ crimping tool for the same, only to find that it is no good for the fine connectors we use. I got it confirmed by a very experience flyer and Power Electronics professional Mr Ragahvendra who faced similar issues and ended up buying a Indian Rupees 2.5K worth Crimper which does the job properly.

A Stitch in time Saves Nine. Praveen on this forum working in Aviation told me that connector he uses cost USD 2K and thier Crimping tools over Rs 60-80K.

I have seen enough of 'Dry Solder', faulty connector (Shabby crimping) in my experience as DIY electronics/HAM since my middle school. I debugged my home brew NR60 Transciever for 3 2 weeks, only to find 3 dry solder in the Ladder filter and bad crimping of a connector were the only spoilsport.  I respect the good tools to do things. If you don't afford the right tools, better buy finished connectors, which was my First reply at the top. All is on the justification of the user.

Yes, in this costly hobby we always need to find alternatives which should drive towards perfection. Its not a rocket science though, whether we use use costly right tools or some alternative, end of the day it should fly.

Thanks to all folks for clearing my doubt. I will definitely explore local options when I require this product, before wading in foreign waters.

Cheers Madi  Thumbs Up
