Title: Coreless servos ?
Post by: gauravag on August 09, 2009, 08:02:35 AM
Hi everyone ?
I wanted to know the pros and cons of a coreless servo. I understand that there are both coreless standard and coreless digital servos available. Would appreciate if the knowledgeable here can share the benefits of this. I have never used these, but might consider one for one of my projects.
Thanks !
Gaurav

I wanted to know the pros and cons of a coreless servo.
hi gaurav,
in any servo there can one among the two motors. cored motor or coreless motor. a cored motor has a steel core stampings upon which the coil is wound, here the steel stamping acts as poles. in a coreless motor the coil is wound on a plastic case, here the coil itself acts as poles. therefore i coreless motor weighless and dynamic( as the armature weigh less, so less inertia to start and stop). most of the small servos have coreless motor only

pros
*weigh very less
*tiny construction possible(2.5g servos are available)
*very dynamic

a typical coreless motor anatony
cons
*cannot hold torque greater than a few kgs
*costlier compared to cored(because of the complicated coil design)
