Title: Upgrade from 3004 servos ?
Post by: gauravag on July 31, 2009, 02:41:59 PM
Hi all,
Ok, I have been using Futaba 3004 servos all along, and i think its time to upgrade to a faster servo with a better torque.
What do you suggest would be a good option. I thought Hitec 5485 would be a good buy, but i doubt that this would be a great servo ( considering the price ) . Plus i have heard issues with centering ,and false torque claims ...

I intend to use them in 60-90 size planes, so do not need metal gear stuff. Just nylon/karbonite, but good, strong, and reliable servos, that i can use for a long time.
Thanks !
Gaurav

Not sure how this question on servos went unanswered.

I have been using both Futaba and Hitec servos for everything (on 450 helis, it was Hitec 65HB and 65MG all the time). But recently, I have discovered that Align servos are pretty capable for my heli stuff (which is pretty much all I do for myself), and I got a whole bunch of really cheap servos for foam planes from HobbyCity.

The Align servos are metal gear, high torque and high speed (DS610).  At least one flyer does Tareq style 3D on his Trex 700 using these for the swash, and no issues at all so far.

Requesting others to post their servo experiences here.

I'm using DS510 and DS520 in my Atom. It is early days and haven't tried any demanding stuff on it, but so far looks good.

Ok, i used the Hitec 5485 digital. They cost around Rs 1200 and are faster, digital and more torque (at least as per specs) than Futaba.
So far, i seem to love them .
i have had around 60 flights with them this season, and if they perform like this with no failures, then there is no looking back at 3004.

Yep, used the same on my Trex 500, and do a fair bit of 3D using it. No issues.  Just forgot mentioning it earlier.

Also, on the Trex 600 Nitro, I have been using a Futaba S9451 (which has since been replaced by the S9452).  The interesting thing is that these are actually car servos, but heli folks found that they are good for swash use on 3D helis.

And the Align servos are claimed to be just rebranded "Savox" servos.  Never had heard of this brand before.  Just another case where a quality product comes out of the shadows when endorsed by a big name.

I was hoping to see more discussion around commonly used servos here.  What about others like JR, and the new commonly used ones from HXT, Turnigy etc.
