India hobby centers - these sell local grown balsa which is cheaper. ENR models at Bangalore is one more. Or if you have the space - grow the balsa tree yourself  Cheesy

Hello  Smiley

You can get very nice quality imported balsa at http://www.sharmamodelaero.com/others.htm and they have very reasonable price. Details are not on their website but you give them call and tell what you want; they will give price over the phone. Try to buy from them directly then you will get best price, do not buy from their any agents.

There is another company name Trikut and they also sale imported balsa. Trikut website is not working but their current e-mail id is trikut@satyam.net.in

Learning to Fly

Hi Rajib,

There used a India Hobby Center in Kolkata as well, in Russel Street/Part Stree crossing. Thats where I got into control line flying. They used to stock everything from  radios to engines, balsa strips, pars and balsa kits.... Does it still exist?

Hello Pankaj,
Yes, Hobby Centre still exists but honestly speaking their products and prices are not very good. Now we have many other suppliers at Kolkata but they don't have any showroom or retail outlet, they do business from their workshop. If you want have their contact numbers I can give you, they have everything you need. But for C/L best kit is from Friend Chemicolour which is at Jadavpur, Kolkata and they are authorized supplier for NCC.

Hello Rajib,

Why dont you post the numbers of the "other" suppliers here in rcindia in the below thread?  This would really help a lot of us since we dont have any listings in Calcutta.

Please post all the numbers of the suppliers in this thread,

The above are the contact details for Rishi Kumar one of the oldest and most active person in the Aero modelling industry. His father started India Hobby Centre when we 50 year olds were in our nappies. You can imagine the minefield of knowledge that lies with this person.

The next old hand is Vivek at Sharma Model Aero Engine an Propellors. His dad is also one of the pioneers of aeromodelling in India and Vivek's name crops up everytime some one mentions BALSA so he might be worth contacting; info@sharmamodelaero.com.

I saw some excellent quality 6mm Balsa planks at RCDhamaka last week(they have other sizes as well). They were high quality and had grain parallel to the length, properly aligned (though novice in Rc, as few say, I have done more of Balsa Chucks and know the pain of sanding a Balsa which had grain in slant direction)  which are much easier to work on, and for strength.

Please beware of buying from just any (foreign)  e-bay shops, because many people may pass on a cheaper alternative timbre called 'Japanica' which though light, doesn't have flexibility/strength of balsa.

Try to procure them locally, as transportation may be a big problem for such fragile item, some times beyond the control of even the most LHS.
