Title: Dealing with improper screws and thread holes on a Heli kit...
Post by: chokxxi90210 on November 01, 2010, 09:49:14 PM
Team,

I started off with assembling the HK J500 Heli, but I found that lots of screws are not the right length, for the swash plate ani-rotation bracket, the holes are too small to match the screws provided and also not threaded from inside to adapt the screws....

On the tail fin, the same story, none of the screws provided can match the length or diameter of the holes in the tail rotor unit...

The ball link holders for the tail rotor control rod, dont have proper threads to be screwed onto the rod....too hard to be screwed on the rod...

How do we deal with this kind of stuff ?? Can anyone suggest some tools or mods or something ???

I can't make it out from the pictures... if a screw is going into plastic, you will forcefully make the hole yourself the first time you tighten a screw.  Do not over tighten and let the plastic inside slip out though.  That is another aspect to check.

For metal to metal, the screws have to be the right size, so please double check as suggested by Sujju.  Same for screws that are deemed too short.

Sujju, for example for attaching the 2 rods (one which connect the main frame and the clamp on tail boom), I tried all the long size bolts, but none had adequate length....  :(

Same happened on the tail fins....I was just trying to assemble the heli (of course with the damaged boom as of now)....I again unassembled all the parts and put the kit away....going for some screw hunt next to next weekend....the same weekend I'll also go hunting for a pipe to match the tail boom dia and weight so that it can serve as a mod till i manage to get a replacement from leaders hobby or something

the tail boom support that hold the horizontal fin clamp in place usually has the longer screws... pls check if you have inserted these screws in other parts of hte heli... usually the kit comes with the correct screws and i myself had done a mistake like this once and was kicking myself untill i say that i had inserted the long screws on the landing skid to the frame

hi mate,
how are you doing with the kit assembly??
If not finished yet.................... I had that kit and found the screws to be right BUT of very poor quality, so I got a 'screw set' for align T-rex450 and used that instead.
fly well, be safe.

don

I wonder if the T-rex 450 screws would work fine for the J500, its a JR Super Voyager E clone, also a lot similar to JR Vibe 500e....

Hello,
It is recommended by everyone on each and every forums that when you purchase a Heli Kit from HK, be it any Heli, buy an upgrade to the screws and replace all the screws AND DO NOT FORGET TO APPLY THREAD LOCK.

That is to avoid any frustrating damage in the future or strong vibrations...

Loose screws will cause vibrations... so might as well replace the screws in the first place it self.

As far as your case is concerned, I suppose there has been a mistake i your kit. There are very less cases in which the screws are fixed wrongly or they are short. Go in for a complete change of screws, That is the same I am doing for my HK450...

I also suggest not to use the pinion you got with your Kit(If any). They are not of good quality.... I read in one of the forums that they damage the gears.... and the teeth were not perfect....

Yes. absolutely. I got it. I am just waiting for your special item to be manufactured by HK. It takes 1-2 weeks for HK to make it.
