The name speaks for itself..
Anyhting about Dremel and I will try my best to answer.
Applications, prices, features, store locations, dealership querries, attachments and accessories, etc.
Technically, most of you will be way ahead but general querries are the most welcome.

Holy mother of god ! another hobbyist from Bangalore !! YAY !!! :D

First of all, I LOVE dremel products...they are soo well designed and fit in the hand.

I own a Dremel Glue Gun (which i bought 7 years ago) and Dremel 4000 Rotatory tool... (both I bought from US)
They are still running the same with absolutely no problems.

And I would like to know your personal Opinion on the Dremel Trio. It seems to be nice, compact and well priced. What are your thoughts on it and what is your real name :D ?

What are the applications of Dremel (general hobbyist and a heli flyer perspective)
Where can i buy one in Navi Mumbai/Mumbai? Also inform about price range?

Post by: anwar on May 01, 2011, 08:10:45 PM
Heli flyer... couple of recent uses I had.

1. To put a flat notch on the motor shaft, so that the pinion gear does not slip out of the shaft.

2. To cut a piece of ply into this shape (http://cgi.ebay.com/F00668-Carbon-Tail-Servo-Mount-TREX-450-PRO-H45031-C-/270732778745?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f08ee5cf9) to make a convertor for the DS480 micro tail servo, as the servo holder on the 450 Pro models are built for mini-servos like the Futaba S9650.

One question.. how did you find/arrive at this forum ? Were you doing google searches for dremel users in India ?

Secondly, would you consider donating something like a 300 for a sweepstakes here ? :)  It would be good advertisement, as we can broadcast a message about the sweepstakes to all the 3000+ members here !  That is quite a bit of advertising to a very targeted audience... something you should be able to convince your bosses easily ;)

Nope, I spend a limited amount of time in India, but do visit Bangalore when I am back in India.  But my location should not be a hindrance for you in donating a Dremel to one of our upcoming sweepstakes :)  Let me know if you are ready, and I will send you an address to ship it to, and we will announce the same !

PS: I fixed earlier Youtube link itself.

Since my trips are infrequent, may I suggest that one of my Bangalore friends (who is also an active member here) pick it up.  He will also ship it off to the winner after the sweepstakes.  If this is OK, I will ask him to contact you, and he will collect it from you.

Cheers!

All set and done with the shifting, thanks!

I personally am using the Dremel 300 with all accessories and am pretty happy with it, though I've been able to explore only 5% of its capabilities in the last 12 months!

I'm sure you've checked it, however, I thought that you should know that there is a good selection available on ebay.in

Hi,
I bought a dremel couple of months back, and believe me it's not a pleasant experience at all for this beautiful product. First of all the Bosch dealers in Bangalore don't know a bit about Dremel. And they want to simply get rid of dead stock lying in their ware houses since many months.

Secondly even Bosch people know very little, about Dremel.

My Dremel didn't had a Collet in it which was mentioned on the box. First I approached dealer, from where I purchased it, upon his cold response which died out couple of phone calls latter. I decided to contact Bosch. And send them a email, provided on their web site, no response again. After all this and a week latter. I was just watching my dremel still lying in box, unpleasant scene. Than finally decided to contact Bosch again. on the calling their call center, got a number with advice to contact that number which belongs to their in charge of sales in Bangalore. Upon calling that number come to know, that is not in use, again called call center, again new number. Upon calling the number got a response but not so warm, asked to wait for 'some time' untill matter is looked upon. This took another 2 days, Dremel still lying in box. Again called the number, and I was asked to wait again.

I thought I was just cheated by Bosch people, because, my Dremel can't be used with out this collet. One fine morning I decided to open Bosch India's web site and copied all the service related emails available on their site. I thought I might get some response now, but |I was wrong, still no response. Then again thought of giving a call to the number provided by Bosch's call center, The person told me to wait till tomorrow morning, for he busy with something else. But he did called me next day and told me to collect the collet from thesame dealer from where I bought the dremel. OK I forgot the pain of traveling 5 Kms. from my place to collect a collet because I was just thinking of using by Dremel at last. Got the Collet At last.

People Who are thinking what a bore I have been, by writing such a long and Boring story can imagine, easily, what a grind I went through by buying a Dremel.

There is no doubt Dremel is a very famous hand tool, But My Experience with Dremel is that, Availability of Dremel accessories, is very difficult, remember you have to depend on accessories provided by Dremel or cheap replacement which are not so easily available, even in Bangalore where Bosch is head quartered, you can imagine about other places.

"And they want to simply get rid of dead stock lying in their ware houses since many months."

I feel sorry for Akshay, he may be quite right bout the 'dead stock' part. I was quoted Rs.6000/- or so by the Ghy dealer and I got it from Blr for around Rs.5000/- all inclusive. When I told the local dealer about the price difference, he smugly told me, "They are all old stock lying at Chennai and Bangalore".

I guess I am lucky that I received all components for a cheaper price.

I was quoted a sum of  :Rs: 5000 for the diamond wheel but fortunately a friend comming from the states got it for me for $13.
Dremel is a good tool for all hobbiests and i feel Bosch should buck up and tap untapped markets.
There is so much potential. If only they get their game together they would be selling a lot more than what they are.
Doc

Title: Re: Dremel
Post by: Akshayb on May 03, 2011, 11:41:53 PM
Yes VC, It's nice if they want to clear dead stock, more interestingly, you ought to get good discounts for, the machine, forced upon dealers by Bosch which hardly ever sells.

And Another word of caution here for Beginners, Remember, Dremel Accessories are very expensive in India as mentioned by flying doc.

However I have a question for Manisha.
Part numbers 24-28 as shown at the instruction manual were not available at both the pieces. These are the clamps, bolt and wing nuts for clamping the work piece on base plate. How do I go about getting these and who do I contact?

Hello Dremel,

I have a couple of  Dremel Moto Tools with many  attachments like flexible shaft extension, router attachment, bench press etc and many, many accessories and bits. However  both tools are non functional now because of damaged speed control units. The models are,
1. DREMEL Variable speed moto-tool Model- 395 type- 3. &
2. DREMEL Variable speed moto-tool Model- 395 type -4.

Both Tools were brought from U.S.A and so they work on 110 volts mains supply. They were purchased when they were newly introduced to US market.I used them with a 230 volts to 110 volt converter.

Purchased first was the model 395, type-3 and it served well for many years. But one day I with absent mind connected it directly to the 230 volts mains supply which burned the switch and speed control unit. The fault was mine. So I bought the second Model- 395, type- 4 moto tool. It worked well for sometime and one day it stopped working on its own. I suspect some semiconductors in the switch and speed control unit have blown or opened.

A few months ago I bought a Dremel  MultiPro 7.2 volt Model-770, two speed cordless moto tool from USA. It is ok for small jobs but not as versatile and powerful as the mains powered moto tools. So I wish to know if the speed control units for the above mentioned Model-395 type -3 and type- 4
moto tools could be purchased here in India? If available where in India can I get them.?

Thank you ,
Rao.

Thanks for responding!

Are you saying that you used to stock this kit earlier? It's surprising because Bosch people say that it's not meant for India. I found a couple of non-Bosch people who can import this kit for me in around 20 days. Only problem is that they couldn't confirm the number of batteries in their kit and hence I never ordered from them.

Yes, I can wait for a month to buy this kit from Bosch. Please let me know other details (Shipping cost, price etc) whenever you find time.

Thank you!

Mr iam-hanuman's smartness removed the name of the kit we were talking about...
For the benefit of any new comer who directly jumps to "Reply #50", I am referring to Dremel 8200-2/28 kit.

Mr iamhanuman & alwar: i've read your nested multi-quotes policy (i am amongst 0.0001% of the members who actually read forum policies) and i the kept the bare minimum of the old comments, just to retain the relevant information. Thread's title is "Dremel" and we are discussing about all sorts of Dremels. If you don't like the way i post, then please delete all of my posts and my id (like you did earlier).

PS: all names have been changed to protect the identities... lol

Not really... if you see the above post #50 modified by "iamhuman", you will notice that the line starting with "Quote from :" is in green color, which means it is a clickable link.  That link would directly take you to the details including the model number you mentioned.  So the clarity or continuity of the conversation is not lost at all.

There is a very valid reason we came up with the "minimum quote" policy... I have seen how bad it gets again and again on other forums (RCGroups for example).

So I, Idi Amin of RC India, hereby declare myself and "iamhuman" NOT guilty of all wrong doing :giggle:

PS: Your concern is noted. Most importantly, this is done to a large number of posts here, from a large number of people, so the blood pressure may be kept under control :)

It's not 2012 yet :)

I just got the 2 battery version from US. The only reason I persisted on 8200-2/28 kit is because the tool runs on 12V batteries. Other 8200/8000 versions run on 10.8V, so they are slightly under-performing. The drawback in my case is that I have to use a step-down transformer, but I have plenty of them at my home.

8200 is available.. but not with 2 batteries .. 2 are attachments and not batteries.Good Luck! That is available in India..

1) here's what i got from the US:
http://www.dremel.com/en-us/tools/Pages/ToolDetail.aspx?pid=8200-2%2f28
it comes with 2 batteries (12V Li-Ion) and 2 attachments. Charger works with 110V AC.

2) these are the ones available throughout Europe and basically, rest of the countries having 220V AC:
http://www.dremeleurope.com/dremelocs-za/category/2712/dremel%C2%AE-8200
it's got 1 battery (10.8V Li-Ion) and the charger works with 220V AC.

i am not sure if the indian version has the mighty 12V battery. even single battery is okay. i'd written to 3 bosch dealers and none of them could verify if was 10.8V or 12. all they knew that there was some sort of battery in the box :)

and yes, it was my 'good luck' as my 8200 kit cost me less than the price of Dremel 300 in india!

Title: Pune

Dremel / Manisha,

i have a question for you.

dremel in India is a subset of the ones in US. Dremel 4000 6/50 (US) differs with 4/65 (India) in attachments and accessories. overall i find 6/50 is much better if you look at the cost of the individual attachments if needed. why is there a difference in the Indian version and US version?

secondly i visited Home Town who stocks Dremel (300 as of now) and they have no idea about Dremel 4000. the senior tools incharge there had to call the Bosch supplier on and off for getting details. and further said 4000 was not available and will have to be ordered which will take atleast 15 days.

is there a dealer in Pune whom i can reach and buy Dremel 4000 (possibly 6/50) in pune? also please quote the approxmiate cost. since i have been reading the forum with average cost of Dremel 4000 being around 5000 - 7000. i was quoted 10500 minimum at home town.

Regards,
Aashish

4000 series is available easily in most cities. Were you able to get one?

Unfortunately there are dealers in Pune trying to sell me Dremel 400 as 4000. they say its the same! fortunately i got to see a catalog in Home Town and got to know that the indian variants are 4000 1/45 and 4/65. DBMS and machpowertools have the 4/65 but priced very high since it involves courier charges.

still waiting for any other dealers to confirm the price.

This is the going prices in Tool markets across the country. I paid some 3800 in Bangalore some 6 moths back. Sadly most of the Online Shop in India are trying Fleece people instead of giving competition to Brick and Mortar shops. Please do confirm local prices before falling prey to these Online shops.

Srivatsa, you can go SJP Road (Towards the Masjid end)  and there is Bosch dealer. You can get best prices there. Other good place is Goodwill Enterprise in SP Road which is more like 'Tools Supermarket' where you can walk and pick tools you want from shelves like Spar/Foodworld!!

Pavan you can get dremel in Balanagar. There is a BOSCH outlet in Balanagar and also in Ranigunj. In local market they are called as Electric Die Grinders.

RaniGunj Bosch outlet(store name Tools & Spares Corporation) in Secunderabad has the Dremel range, but you must be wary of going into their glossy branch. Instead you must first inquire with their basic store of Tools & Spares Corporation, or find out from Bosch's marketing people first and then deal for the price.

A couple of stores in the neighbourhood also sport the bosch logo in their store banner, so there can be a chance for price comparison.

Hi; I have Dremel 4000. Purchased from DBMSBosch Delhi. Why not Dremel manufacture Cutting wheels from high grade Steel ? The 420 wheel breaks easily and become small when use on Aluminium. We have to change it again and again. If Dremel make metal blades\wheels for metal cutting then we need only one wheel.

@ mohitjindal

u right !!!!!!!!! it need to use more blades to cut small area on aluminium.
Is there any other blades from DREMEL?

I too agree with the need for a more robust cutting disc. Even for a minor cutting job, u run through a number of discs.  I use it at time to cut small strips of wood ,but even if there is a slight misalignment, the disc disintegrates into pieces. I always wear eye protection to avoid being hit by these flying pieces.

Hope Dremel Manisha is reading this :help: :help:

Yes the discs do crash quickly, probably that is why they give sell them in boxes of 30 ;).
I feel, a steel disc will blunt out too after cutting softer materials etc, atleast these discs do not lose their sharp edge unless materials like mica get burnt and fused on the edge.

The primary reason for the breakage that I feel is unsteady hands (due to vibrations or scare). I try to minimize these breakages by

1. analyzing the edge for optimum cutting angle and then using the tool
2. cutting smaller sections rather than a continous cut
3. giving some dwelling time to the motor for attaining speed and some cool down time after each cut
4. Always remembering that the Dremel is a rotary tool intended for less torque and more speed, so pushing into a cut will break or dull the wheel easily, due to extra heat generated. Just touch and let it have more cycles on the surface to be cut rather than pushing it in like one would for an angle grinder.
5. having loads of patience.
6. Use two wheels together for cutting harder materials
7. cutting at the right RPM (consult manual). More RPM = more heat, which is the biggest enemy

Doing all these had actually increased the life of the wheel, In fact, I've used the last three wheels to the extent where they've been ground down to almost 3mm radius.

Hope that helps.

Post by: cavalier on October 11, 2012, 01:00:06 PM
Thanks Girish,

Your comments have been very helpful, especially the idea of using two wheels together. You were spot on when you commented on the main reason for breakage was due to unsteady hands. I also found that, whenever the cut deepens more than a couple of mm, the risk of breakage increases. I too have improved but have yet to wear out a disc. Thanks once again & will follow your guidelines.

Cavalier

Some more techniques that I've felt help:

8. When cutting wood, hard plastic or iron (any other material that leaves behind loads of mess), keep blowing while the cut is underway, helps remove unnecessary filings which can add to friction. You will notice the moment you blow, the cut seems smoother

9. Mark the edge to be cut by lightly running the dremel once and then deepen the cut, equally applied to cutting coroplast with blades. Less pressure, more runs is the key

This response comes after many years of your remarks. My excuse is that I "discovered" rcindia.org just recently. You're right when you remark that the Salespeople of Bosch cannot contribute anything regarding Dremel. But this is the story regarding everything in India. From clothes to nails to tools to even food. The hobby part is perhaps the worst simply because in India gossiping and standing for hours and repeating the same trash over and over again is a hobby in itself. The main subject is money, money and money then somewhere come girls but rarely books and hobbies not at all. So why wonder. When I ask for a particular color in case of a shirt, I will be shown everything but what I want. This is sadly the story about India, Indians and their commonsense. Sorry I have to write this but wage earning is more important than knowing what one is doing. The hobby market in the USA is anywhere between 200 to 500 BILLION Dollars and the trend in Europe is not very different. That is also the reason why there are huge DIY stores.
Now just two ideas: How about packing material, mostly good quality of pine wood. Ingenuity can help you make a lot of money and fulfill your "Hobby".  The other idea is converting beer bottles into wonderful utility items. (The scrap buyer pays Rs. 0.50/bottle).
The ex-chairman of Daewoo Corporation has written a wonderful book called "Money lies on the road" - my addition "Bend your stiff back and pick it up".

This post shows an extremely condescending attitude.I think it is unfair of you to make such overtly general statement about Indians. Comparing the hobby market here to nations such as the USA is pointless. Rather, you should support the effort of Local Hobby Store owners who cater to a small market at low profits. The very presence of this forum is proof that the RC hobby scene in India is progressing. I do not understand what you have written about packing material. What are you trying to say? What does craft out of beer bottles have to do with anything? Please clear this up because I have not understood.

Sir I am proud of being an Indian, and more over having had the guts to give up my 7 year old job, as a systems engineer with the largest software manufacturer on the planet to start my own model railway manufacturing & exporting company (perhaps the only one of its kind in India and definitely in my home town Calcutta). Although its does not earn me any more than my daily bread, yet its a passion I will live and die for.
I encourage others to join the band wagon and proudly say what it says on my home page  "MADE IN INDIA".

I recently bought a dremel 3000 and after almost 3 hours of total worktime (across several days) it stopped working. No vibration, no smoke or smell. It just doesnt switch on. My el cheapo chinese rotary tool lasted way longer. Is there a service center in Secundrabad/Hyderabad where I can get this fixed?

I was cutting foam board with it, and  I applied really little pressure. This was my first dremel, and now I feel it's just over hyped. I can buy 5 el cheapos in the cost of one dremel and they'll probably last me a lifetime. I'm really disappointed.
