Title: Grub screws for Emax motor
Post by: coolpratheesh on December 21, 2011, 07:29:29 PM
Guys can anybody tell me the specs of the grub screw used in this motor and also give me a clue where to find it. I lost one of the grubs in a crash. I require a replacement , otherwise the motor is useless.
 Please do help.

Hey I have a spare motor - not working. Which grub screw do you want? I can send the screw by post or courier if you are willing to pay courier charges.

Almost all motors i've opened up had 3mm grub screws, most probably this motor also has a 3mm ones... you can get these in hardware shops which sell nuts, bolts, threading dies etc... ( not the one who sell pipes, paint and plywood) if you cant find one ask a 2 wheeler mechanic for shops selling metric screws

Is there any other way to fix the motor since it is quite difficult to find grub screw of that small size (3 mm). Please guys let me know. I lost both the screws in flight.  :P :P :P :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Respected Modellers.. you all are experiencing this problem of non availability, of this screw, is , mostly because, we asks for it as "GRUB SCREWS.."..  yes, technically is true word, but most of the sellers never knows the name mentioned above.. instead, if you ask for micro allen key bolt, they will show you, or ask you for the size in mm.. these screws are too popular in electronics industry.. micro switches, washing machines, car acessesories and lots.. mostly, about 99 % time this screw will be in 3 mm.. and may be 5 in big motors.. and do not worry, if you lost this screw once.. will guide you for an effective alternate, is simple.. and still you are not able to make this, please do not throw away the motors , but give me, and i will bear all courier charges.. because i have a lots of things to do with these.. :giggle:

here is the solution.. i told you the size of the screw is 3 mm.. and here i got this motor from one of my respected friend, as damaged, and reworked, working well..

but the screws of the base is missing..
so, as we know its 3 mm, take two 3 mm (M3), in to 3/4 inch long good quality bolts, to make the concealed screws..

now gently insert the screw in to the slot of the motor and check for the threrads.. make sure the threads are OK..
screw in the bolt, until you see the tip of the bolt just inside.. and stop..

now, mark the region at outside with a permanent marker pen..
remove the screw.. and fix it on a bench vise.. and make sure vise grabed the screw well, while not damages the threads..

use a high speed hacksaw blade to cut the bolt at marking..
now we got the bolt as tiny as the original screw of motor..

fix the screw on vise again.. as shown.. means the side of cut must be at top of the vise..
by using the same high speed hacksaw, make a ridge across the screw carefully..

now we got a same screw with a flat head slot for flat head screw driver..
and make sure the ridge is sound with micro screw driver, with appropriate flat tip..

insert and screw in the screw with same appropriate screw driver.. and drive in a little more to inside to make any flashes to clear..
loose the screw again, and place the base of the motor in and tighten the screw.. with screw driver..
fix the next one or in to three numbers.. tighten well up to torque, of .6 Kg.. and apply a little drop of industrial cyano glue to the screw head with atooth pick.. yes, do not drop directly as it may enter in to bearing or winding.. damage is sure.. so, with a tooth pick.. and fix it.. RCyit..

if you damaged the slot with thread.. dont worry.. drill two holes just near to the exsisting holes, in 2 mm, and then can thread it with thread tap.. is inexpensive.. and can do with bare hands.. amd put new screws, as file out all old mess..

using M3 bolt or screw directly is not a problem.. but may add a little weight as extra.. but think, it must not be a problem, as we have to add some weight as nose weight to balance CG.. but also take care about vibrations, as vibrations can loosen long bolts protuding from base..
