Guys,

Where can I get a good quality tissue paper for covering a plane (paper +dope type tissue) in Delhi?

also, what is Silkspan and where to find it?

How about MonoKote ? 2M rolls cost 600-800 wiki. Rotor/RCDhamaka sell them locally! Nothing beats Monokote finish with such ease!

I just recalled. My NCC trainer used to get those tissue (tracing) papers from Map/Architectural Plan (Blue print) Photo Copier guys (Ammonia Printers) - they have large roll of sheet of ~2 M width. It used to be pretty strong and easily take impact with stiff, dry grass, when coated with dope.

But this was 'Local Jugaar' in a small town like mine, and in early 1990's when we didn't have LHS around. I am not sure what today's seniors use.

Its there:

http://www.rotor.co.in/prod-list.asp?catid={A82417AE-192F-41E9-BB13-6C36B2BAE5F8}

I am not sure if its Monokote clone (Iron-on Kote) or something totally different, but costs little lesser than what I posted before (Rs 230/M , min 2M).

Now people blame that I don't look at LHS  Violent

Trythe laminating film. The plastic sheets used to laminate certificates and documents.
It has heat activated gum and is fuel proof. I have used it to patch up covering defects. A really large roll 12 inches wide 26gauge which is the lightest costs around 270/-
will try it on my next build.

I had recommended the sun film used in cars to a friend of mine  as I picked this tip from  a senior aero modeler in Chennai , never tried it myself though , but he was very very happy with the end result  in fact he said it  withstood hits from small pebbles also very well .In fact he told me it was available in Delhi in a few colors , may be you could have a look at it .
He says when applied tightly over a framework it  provides a very firm finish and the best part was that for our climate it is great and does not sag as it is anyway supposed to withstand continuous exposure to sunlight .

The other thing I have been told is for foamies the same person uses  thin Dhoti ( Muslin kind ) Cloth  soaked in diluted fevicol  applied to the foam when wet and left to dry , he claims it  makes ordinary thermcole rock solid

Mind you I have no experience with either of these as I am a  Coro Addict  Wink Grin so dont have need for covering in any case

Mr Sai, do you mean using muslin cloth as brush to apply fevicol or 'plaster' muslin cloth itself with fevicol ?

And one more clarification (I might have asked before as well), are EPP and 'Thermacol' the same ? There are two type of packing cushioning used for packing TV/Computer/other electronics in box. One is the  age old hard thermocol, the other one getting popular lately is the spongy (not bubble wrap) thremocol which is usually layered like plywood to make proper casting blocks to place electronic items between. The local term for these materials makes finding them tough in the market.

You may get good quality tissue easily but getting nitrate shrinking dope ?? Let me also know if some one finds the source in India. it is available abroad but due to being highly flammable can not be imported.
And by dope I do not mean the quickfix mixed with NC thinner or Duco clear lacquer these are only substitute for original aircraft dope.

On the issue of Iron on Kote stocked by Rotor Chennai, these are not Monokote (which is manufactured by TopFlite) but is easy towork with, goes tight and stays tight, goes around compund curve easy and is overall fine only issue being that it lacks the lusture of Monokote.

A correctly doped on tissue finish is a sight to behold.

Plaster Muslin cloth itself to the thermacole stretched normally like any other covering  as I already said I don't have 1st hand experience of this  but I would suggest may be try it on a small sample piece before doing it to a model .
I guess this is method  a desi version of this SOLARTEX :
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1936528/tm.htm
http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=1965

I used SOLARTEX on my PT 60 Glow when I used to fly it before and can say for sure that this is one tough material .
No way for any tears or nicks from stones or anything else .You really got to make an effort to  tear it .
In fact after around 1 1/2 years of flying when it was stripped off to recoat after a clean up I found quite a few broken Balsa ribs in the wing  but the wing did not sag or loose shape despite these  only due to the solartex .
But it is heavier  Sad

The one in layers is what is EPP it is  available in Chennai near Roypetta Clock tower ie you take a right turn towards  marina beach from the clock tower immediately after the turn on both  left and right side you have these shops that  sell foam for insulation  of ducting car's , packing  etc  they have EPP upto 10 - 12 mm  available in Rolls . In fact we located a company called Supreme Industries in Chennai  who sell EPP as well but only in Bulk .

The Local term for this is EPP in Chennai

I have tried EPP  sandwiched between two coro sheets ( not my original Idea though suggested by EDWIN ( martian ) and boy this combination is   awesome I guess a direct nose hit from  100 ft altitude  might be within its capability  Thumbs Up

Sai

Another cloth covering used is "parachute silk" though no idea where it can be sourced. Its pretty thin and equally tough. Have seen long back a foam wing at ENR models that had this covering on the foam.

There is some sort of tow line which is released about 20 seconds into the video..

I think there was a Tow line as the winch (white square) seems to fall between 00:19 - 00:22

Nice graceful flight anyway!

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

In case you are wondering why the video was posted in this thread, the original Youtube video description says this :

An RC Glider from the 1940's built from the original plans, one of the prettiest gliders ever kitted! This version is not yet painted and weighs 2.3 lbs with rudder and elevator controls. The covering is tissue and nitrate dope. It needs ailerons for better roll control and I'll probably add these later.

And it is so graceful in the air... almost like tip-toeing through the sky !

The winch is what tows the glider. The "white square" is just a flag so you can see where the tow hook drops/lands.
