On the 14th of Oct 1943, the Eighth Air Force, comprising the 91st, 92nd, 305th, 306th and 379th Bomb Groups attacked Schweinfurt in Germany with 350 bombers in an attempt to knock out the ball bearing factories situated there. This infamous raid has been a blot on the USAAF in the fact that they lost 77 bombers with a loss of nearly 600 airmen killed on that day. Consequently, due to the high attrition, this attack was nicknamed 'Black Thursday'.

1.For Axial loads you use Roller bearing, for example, in a jet engine (may be in a RC jet too) the centre support bearing is always roller, while the front support bearing mostly is ball.

2. also ball bearing is used where there is a little bit of longitudal play (by design) on the motor shaft.

3. Usually roller bearing work under low temp regions while ball bearings work at high temp regions,

4. lubrication oil of the roller bearing is retrieved and resued while the last stage ball bearing oil is lost to the atmoshphere.

let me chip in with some practical experience

for axial load on one direction - use a taper roller bearing

roller bearings are used to accomodate axial play - this way
the shaft can move a couple of mm either way while the bearing
housing is fixed.

for the most flexible - use double row taper roller bearing - can be used
where machining is imprecise and fits have too much tolerance , and can work under
great load.

all the above are from pratical experience of machinery ranging from .25 hp to 300 hp
and rpms ranging from 45 rpm to 15000 rpm

guys in which direction are we running.
