You can use 'Japanica' which is little heavy than Balsa. Its been sold under some other local name like 'Patiyala Ply' or something (I am totally missing the name. Mr Sanjeev of RCDhamaka told me the local name).

But I think Balsa is available in most of the metros LHS like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata etc. You shoul n't have a big problem finding them.

L'enfant Terrible du RCIndia

The wood used in match sticks comes from the Indian Silk Cotton tree or Simul. The density of Simul is about 3 times that of Balsa (approx). I use it for my model boats and Chuck / Catapult  gliders.

I built about 90 wooden toys from Hong Kong last year for children. They were made of an extremely light ply. I was that pleased with it I saved what was left over from the kits and now use the offcuts for firewalls and strengthening in my aircraft. Yes it is heavier than foam but not by a great degree. I can't help with the name of the ply or  what type of timber was used. But Cutting it with anything but a light saw or my scroll saw made a mess of it. As engine mounts and anchor points it's ideal. The resulting kits using CA were extremely strong. I just wish I could buy larger sheets of it. It is a very common ply used in many ways in China. Veru popular for export due to it's light weight.

I have tried using a very thin sheet of MDF but this was too heavy. VC's Silk Cotton tree sounds ideal.       Stu
