Hello All,
Is there any source of solder with higher lead content? I need a lead content greater than 40% as the regular rosin-core solders available are 60% tin and 40% lead.
Found a very small, old piece of solder (that belonged to my late grandfather) that was unusually soft and produced an excellent finish (high luster and fantastic workability with a 25w iron). I was able to deduce that the greater the lead content, the softer the solder. (May not be the right deduction)  ;D
Please help!

P.S - I do not have any solder wire left, so would posting a picture of the soldered surface help?

I dont think it works that way. Lead oxidizes faster and weakens over time. To get good solder it is essential that you preheat your iron to good temperature and then start soldering. Also AWG of the solder matters. I use 22AWG 40/60 sn/pb solder with my 25 watt solderon iron and it gives good finish

So you are using a 60% lead solder?
 
Or this this a typo? As you can see from my post above, solder currently available in most outlets are 40% lead (Plumbum) and 60% Tin (Stannum).

P.S - Its really difficult to work with 60% tin solder for 8AWG wire (Lipo connector).  :(

yes. Its indeed a typo. For 8AWG wire, you may get a higher wattage soldering iron and can use thick AWG solder.

I've had difficulties with a 50W iron on 10 AWG wires. This was not with a chisel tip though.

i even had the same type of wire from my uncle .
you have to use a high watt iron first ,go for 60 w may be

High lead content will tarnish overtime making connections bad. People are shifting to lead free now. Why at this time go for high lead solder wire?

I hope u are aware with the problems associated with lead free solder. A little lead is good.
I always solder in day time. I use 25 w iron, when heat is not enough for fat wires I use my butane torch to heat my soldering iron . ;) 60/40 is good balance for our work.

Resin Cored is generally Called No Clean Solder. Its non-conductive and need no surface cleaning after soldering but depends sometimes based on your application.

These days SMT/SMD Solder paste has taken over the Wire Solder which is available in No Clean Flux tye which eliminate the need of extra flux or cleaning of the Surface and is efficient to use.

I solder a lot :P Use the best solder wire available locally(Rs.1200/kg or thereabout) and use plenty of flux. The yellow kind. You will get good results. If you want to solder wires, pre-tinning is mandatory. Again, use plenty of flux. Another tip is to use a heavy soldering iron(the heavier the tip, the greater the heat capacity) while soldering wires. The "Soldron 50W" soldering iron with a chisel tip is more than adequate for the silicon wires we use..
