What brand of locally available epoxy and/or glue does people use, for building foam/coro planes ?

Do most people prefer epoxy over CA/glue ?

3) EPOXY EITHER RAPID OR REGULAR

Hi Sai,
I am using this Bond tite for my field work repairing, since it is easily available and give quick bond even on depron or thermocol, i found no issue in damaging of my  material till date. yes when used in heavy quantity in any surface i feel little warm, but no damage to my model.

I was talking of Anabond or feviquick eating foam , epoxy in any form is not a problem with foam.

People......... try out stag brand(or 3m or silverbond etc) rubber paste available in hardware stores -it is the paste used for shoe repairs, paste seat covers and mend cycle punctures, costs less than rs 100 per litre and is totally foam safe(epp, depron, eps, xpp, xps, biofoam). you got to apply paste to both surfaces, allow to dry for close to 5 mins and then bond together with little pressure and u have a joint for a lifetime but making alterations is next to impossible :)

Dear Mr Rao, I have been using rubber glue for quite some time on foam with excellent results. This here is my latest foamie, a Redbull Edge 540 Profile made of epp, stuck with stag brand rubber paste. Seems like it aint eaten yet! Do try it out........... I'm sure u'd luv it for its price

Rubber based glue like fevibond is a no-no on thermocole at least. Not sure about other types of foam. Never tried on depron at least. I'm using elmers wood glue for depron as no CA is available, dries fast and bonds "soon" enough. The CA i have makes craters in the depron.

Any place in bangalore for foam safe CA??

Hi all ,
One glue that works great when used carefully is hot Glue .
You can get a glue gun for around Rs 250 - 300 and then only glues sticks .
It stick just about any thing Coro , foam etc ( but the heat can melt some foams ) , the other thing is there should be no contact between the gun nozzle and foam.

I have used it with CORO , Bio Foam , Double side laminated foam and EPP. In fact on the PIAGET I removed the landing gear and replaced it with EPP SKIDS.

I found 5min epoxy in local stores these days. Can be found at any paints/ Hardware shops.

New "ARALDITE - Klear" and "FEVITITE-RAPID". So Many versions are there in both brands. But only these things are 5Min Epoxies.

 use a twin sided tape for that purpose
they are available easily in the market and are cheap
reinforce the bond using tape

or

put a tape on the surface to be joined and glue the tape together using ca [i.e. indirectly glue the parts as ca when comes with contact of thermocol eats it away

or

get a  foam safe glue from any lhs/hk

are u serious ?  no way can a twin sided tape be used for joining surfaces!  get epoxy from the local hardware store. ask for araldite rapid( 5 mins glue) else get the normal araldite .normal araldite takes time for it to cure before u do the bonding!
another idea is using HOT GLUE . just make sure its not too hot!

i m 100% serious and i have tested that method in a plane which i build in order to see how can we sand thermocol
if u reinforce with a piece of tape it works fine
actually the foam based 2 sided tapes are very very strong-in class 7th i build a hovercraft powered by vacuum cleaner and the polythene was stuck by a 1" foam based double sided tape and believe me after long usage the poly.. torn from the hole beneath the vehicle through which the air escaped but the joint at the side of the 1" ply to the poly didn't break and when i tried to take it off oh man it was not coming i had to use a lighter to free the bond and get rid of the poly[as my mother wanted to use the ply for some purpose]
so they can be used for that purpose easily

the glue i mentioned will be available with stationary shops..........

and i dont prefer foam safe glues from lhs as they are really priced high and we can use the ways as suggested by mr rao.........................8)

Get HC Foam Safe CA (2-3), CA Accelerator and CA Debonder, if you can spend the $$, nothing can the beat. Else Fevitite/Araldite Rapid are good  local options. I use all the combinations - Foam Safe CA, Fevitite and Tapes. be wise!

i have a nokia n73 and it cannot can take close up pics automatically[without any setting]
when i change it into close up mode with a forced flash and -2 exposure then  it takes a perfect pic[indoors]

One thing I noticed about two side tape...
I had this coro battery compartment which was padded with 5mm biofoam with a 2 sided tape. During the crash, the battery ripped open, the coro got destroyed, but whatever was left still had the biofoam firmly stuck to the coro sheet via the 2 sided tape... So for some application, this actually works

well with my personal experiance-it is good espcially with thermocol
it joins them tight and is not easily detachable once it dries
the joint will be there even if the surroundings break!!!!!!!

Fevicryl is good stuff, however, I am on the lookout for Fevicol Marine. It is supposed to be totally waterproof.

try Evotite foam safe glue available with rcforall, it is super glue but it is foamsafe dry in just 20 sec!!!

any please help me i just buy a rc jet f/a-18e from bananahobby.com. how i can joint it and which glue i can use on it.

Locally available and doest cost much compared to FoamSafe glues.

I have tried EPP-EPP it  works great.
Yet to try CFRod-EPP.

For thermocol, you can check home made glue.

You can make it with Potato (!).
Take 1Cubuc Cm of potato, and boil in half cup of water for 30-45 minute. maintain water volume by adding or can boil in closed tin container. Just add some CuSO4 to save the joints from ants to eat (Dont add in tin container as it corrode Fe and make FeSo4). That's it.
Use it with temp 45-60 C.

2. Cellulose glue-2
Use rice powder or flower powder or Small SabooDana.
Boil with water. Can also add CuSO4 to save from Ants.
Boil till transperent like color form. Dim the stove to avoid wastage for bubbling.
Apply hot but not so much that foam shrink.

Gum/Gond granuls / Sirish
Melt in hot water, apply with brush, join and check the rigidity.

Checking :
1. Always use the thinnest possible layer for apply.
2. Use hot but not too much hot so that Base material damage.
3. Use of a small poison will save your plane in hanger from attack of ants.

Humid weather like coatal areas are not recomended for cellulose based glue(1 or 2) but resin/rubber based glue(3).

Synthetic glues are good with Marine/polystic type. (I prefer Jivanjorh Polystic)
But use with thinner coat if require dilute with water for good bonding. Of course, apply pressure for better joints.

Rubber based adhesive (Like Dendrite) are diluted with thinner and just check how the thinner reacts with Thermocol. They are best suited for Balsa/Wood with thinner coat.

If you want to got informed about various glues available, go to nearest car ornamentation center where film covering is done with Tyre repairing. If AC Insulation and/or home decoration like matting is done nearby, Its the treasure island for your aeromodelling hobby.

I was able to use 'BOLI' super glue on my EPP (got from eppindia).
This is damn cheap in the local market.
You get 3 tubes for Rs 10/- in the market(Yes 3 for 10).
The local shop sells at Rs 5/- per tube.

Once opened you should use this pretty fast. May be 24-48hrs?
Keepin in fridge will give much more life.

I must say I havent tried other CA (like feviquick) on this EPP.

Some one can try this on Depron/Thermocol and let us know if it works fine..

Feviquick as well as Super Glue works well with EPP foam sheets!!!

i use anabond CA cheap n best n strong on both EPP and Coro

Anyone tried hot glue gun on foam? At first I thought it might burn the foam... but guess what all my models are repaired and scratch models are fixed by normal glue gun. BEWARE: keep the nose away from foam... a very slight touch can make a hole :)

Also try it first on safe piece of foam before trying on main portion.

@ drone - i bought this for RS.20 for one! Iv used it on my balsa models and i love it! But mine is not foam safe. It made a neat hole through thermocol. Can glue which is not safe on Thermocol be safe on epp??

Yes, hot glue works fine on the foam-board type of foam, with the caveat as mentioned above by Vikas.

Another Rubber Based Glue Found which doesn't destroy Foam(Any kind of Foam.)

Fevicol Decorative Glue....

Comes in a metal tube with a black cap on it. MRP 25/- [In Indore(M.P)]

I have tried and tested. Just Apply on both surfaces. allow to dry for 5~10 min and stick. Makes bond in less than 10 to 15 minutes. and after it gets dried. You wouldn't be able to un-stick it. But I prefer you to leave it for half an hour after sticking.
Tested on Bio Foam.

I have used in several operations like:
Bio Foam To Coro Sheet.
Bio Foam to thermocoal.
Bio Foam to wood.(Takes more time in bonding)
Bio Foam to CF Rod.
Even I have glued hinges to finish with the control surfaces of Bio Foam. Took more time but after it is done. You would need Plier or something to pull off the hinge piece.

No problem in applying with bare fingers.

Can be found locally at Art & Craft Stores. If the shopkeeper don't understand this glue. Tell him that you want to stick foams...

Used more than 2 tubes till now and no problem at all.

EPP is much more versatile in this respect and can take most types of glue/bond (that thermocol cant).
Also BOLI is very cheap and does good bond. (not good on Thermocol, so its only EPP safe and not foam safe)

However CA hardens and forms a solid on EPP. Though not an issue I personally dont prefer this.

I have found hotglue to be the cheap and fast way for joining epp.

Applying directly would melt the EPP in some cases and requires some pract. Good way is apply a lump on waste piece and transfer immediately to you plastic card (old debit/credit cards) and apply to the joint. Good for side by side '--' joints and 'hot glue hinge'.
For 'L', 'T' joints apply direclty from gun.
For stacking it would be ordinary fevicol applied to both the layers.

Another (but expensive and professional) option for foam would be 3M Super 77.

Fevicol SR 998 doesnt work on Thermocol. But is excellent for veneer (and may be balsa too ?)

If I am not mistaken, Fevibond is like Dendrite - rubber based solvent that will eat Depron / Thermocole. Fevicol Decoration Glue is Foam safe - as is mentioned on the package - "Ideal for bonding Thermocole". However, I can't seem to find it in the local market here at Guwahati.

I have seen multiple people build them with 5 minute epoxy.  Use only just enough quantity, to keep the weight down.

The recommended method is medium CA with accelerator, and I have never seen any discussion so far about accelerators available in India (not sure if LHSes import and keep them).

I have a friend who uses baking soda powder as CA accelerator  :giggle: . He even helped me once in the field to fix my fuel tank support and its rock solid.

I am hoping Multiplex folks like Sai/RCForAll will comment on this.

 for multiplex planes  medium ca+ accelerator i s the best option, i prefer thick ca  with accelerator because it gives you some time to work on,just completed my hyperion snipper x2 ( epp plane),used the uhu por glue for all the work,its a perfect one for gluing epp . sai is selling multiplx planes but i have more experince building multiplex :giggle:

I used fevikwik 203 CA on my Easystar but after trying bondtite clear & fast for some repair work, i'm sure this is what i'm gonna use on my next Multiplex model.

UHU POR Glue (Foam Safe) is no more available in the UAE market. From the wholesaler I came to know that its been discontinued, at least in UAE

I just saw 3 glues for Pidilite/Fevicol here in Qatar : SR998 , contact adhesive 777 and WG220 for furniture.  What are each of these for ? What would be best for foam board ?

Please do not use this glue, use CA only. Recently while boiling my easystar I discovered that the parts where i had used bondtite didn't recover fully, not a big deal but why compromise.

I just started into foamies and got into a bind, which glue or CA to use, I tried evotite460 but it is not sticking the foam together super glue eats into the foam, finding no solution i hot glued it but it looks bad.

Any suggestion are welcome. Veterans please help.

hi Subir,

evotite460 is pretty good one, me and may other foam builders are using it. u have to be little careful, not to apply to much, only thin layer, otherwise it takes some time around minute or so and u have to hold the join in place till it is dry. if u apply thin layer it is very effective takes only few seconds to join!!!

5 minute epoxy (Araldite Rapid etc) applied carefully works on most types of foam. The trick is to apply very small quantities, and wipe of the excess quickly.

For foamboard, I have seen wood glue (carpenter type fevicol) being used very successfully here.

The trick learned from VC,

Stick Cellotape on both surfaces to join. Now fix with even fevi-quick(CA) and this will not ate foam as it will not came in contact with foam. Very effective method and single glue can be used for wood (Balsa) and foam (Depron/Biofoam). Preferable use cold CA can help you more with cellotape.

But with any type of glue, use minimum glue.

But, then cellotape doesn't stick well with biofoam. I have a hard time sticking it, it gives away too easily. Might be good for small gliders but what about big planes?

Am I wrong here? Please correct me.

Use Wonder555 cellotape available in Kolkata, not any other brand. You can take 2" Roll from Gitadi (Tomorrow afternoon onwards). You are perhaps using Fighter make. Those bonding are much inferior than Wonder-555 make(flooded in Kolkata Supply).

Another trick (I don't know this is right or wrong)
Clear dust by brush first and then by vacuum cleaner if possible. Now apply one layer and peel off which will take the last trace of dust. Now Apply another 2nd layer (by method second but by position first as initial layer is nothing but garbage after peeling off which takes away sanded particles too) and press gently with hand to strengthen more by more bonding but keep in mind that the micro-bubbles does not crack and attach with cello-tape.

I think it should work.

I dont know if this is available in India or no but if you can do some research and enlighten others it will be great....

AMAZING STUFF THIS, AND SO LIGHT IN WEIGHT TOO...This adhesive is waterproof and expands 3 times its size. Once stuck, its impossible to seperate the joint.
Fantastic substitute to hotmelt glue as its so light weight and can be sanded and painted over too. Perfect for gapfiller jobs where any cavities need filling or repair jobs where the motormount has been pulled off in a crash. To use as filler, I normally mix it with fine sawdust and spray a little water over the applied area and watch it expand. I needed to fill a small gap in a veneered oak door recently. Used PU 30 mixed with moist sawdust and guess what it went inside the door and expanded so much that the entire area affected bulged up, (ruined all my efforts as I used too much)..... so what?? Guess I have to start all aver again..lol :banghead:
I have been using it for all my EPP, DEPRON and BALSA projects in hobby and woodwork around home.
Its is most commonly used by all carpet fitters for sticking carpet gripper rods on to concrete floors where no drilling or nailing is allowed. It sets in approx 30 to 40 minutes but fully cures overnight. This stuff is so strong that you have to use bolster / chiesel to remove a 24 hour cured gripper rod..... BTW for those unaware of the term "Gripper Rod" ; its 5ml thick 1 inch wide x 48 inch long  ply wood strip with loads of nails sticking out to hold carpet in place.

I am attaching some images of my recent project "FORMOSA 2" by GWS. As this polystyrene / thermocol plane was covered in packaging tape, the nose needed a lot of weight to get the C&G correct. I used PU 30 to stick a pcs of blue foam to bring the bulkhead forward and made a motormount using loads of layers of  white "FOAMBOARD" from signboard manufacturers. Now the problem is GWS supply a flimsy cowl which is thinner than an icecream cup... I guess I have to visit an air show or a swap meet and see if I can pick up a suitable cowl.

Foam safe CA is available in India , you can get Loctite 460, 408,403.
The only thing is it is very expensive RS.1330/- for 20 ml bottle. I would

I would also like to give my suggestions.
From few days i am using locally available CA with Biofoam/Depron. But the trick here is let the CA get more viscous in the bottle itself(keep the bottle for month or 2 in new condition), use when the the viscosity is little bit less than that of hot glue. You will find amazing results. I have used in construction of all my bio foam planes and the joints are strong.

Sorry i forgot to tell the reason. The reason here for CA not eating the foam is the aceton like content of CA gets evaporated in long run which makes it thicker. The Aceton part of CA is responsible for eating of foam. Any glue or paint that has contents of acetone or any thing from the family of Ketones will eat foam.

Sorry for the bump.

I tried sticking two pieces of Coroplast (advertisement boards) 2mm thick using Araldite standard Epoxy Glue. I mixed the two pastes (Resin glue and hardener) and applied. I stuck two pieces this way.
I stuck two other pieces the same way as above but after rubbing the two pieces with a sandpaper.
But neither were strong after 4 hours. Do I need to wait more? Or wasn't it the right glue?

Standard Araldite requires 24 hours to set.

I have Araldite instant/clear and they take 4-10 mins and stick very nicely and good

I have a few RC friends in USA.
In America they use "Amazing Goop"; A very thin coat of this rubber based foam safe adhesive is also applied at leading edges of all foamies to prevent any nicks or hanger rash from spreading deeper and making the wing section weaker.. makes it heavier by 20 to 30 grams though.

We use mainly UHU Por which is a German product and Gorilla Glue which is a bit expensive but an amazing product..

UHU POR was in short supply but that is due to the price increase...
Its back in the market now ..
A small 20 gram tube that used to retail at Rs250 approx is now approx RS 400 ...


If one wants to fill gaps then best is Gorilla Glue..

As suggested by some one earlier in the thread, most CA adhesives are safe once the acetone has evaporated... the makers suggest to keep these cool...(in your fridge.. :) lol)

Might be a good idea to make a trip down to the PVC window and door frame manufacturers and buy a mitre kit from them which will have a bottle of CA and kicker (Accelerator for Cyanoacrylate)....see image below. Recently I bought a MX2 3D ready to fly from Hobby king and it was assembled totally using Cyanoacrylate... so just one adhesive can do most jobs but we aeromodelling tinkers like messing about and venturing into other fields to find better products...

I do not see why not as thermocole is same family as Depron or EPP...Expanded Polypropeline

Thermocole is EPO ...still Expanded Poly.....something so I do not see why it will not work...Try a small area.

EPP: expanded polypropylene (similar to expanded polystyrene but very flexible and has 'memory' so it bounces back to shape after being compressed)
EPS: expanded polystyrene (beer cooler foam)
XEPS: Extruded polystyrene (Dow blueboard) USED FOR BUILDING INSULATION

Though costly, but wallpaper glue ( NaCMC or CMC ) can be applied over the thermocol to make coat. It is water soluable.

Well friends... we are making a big issue about the whole thing of what glue to use for foams.... The first post after Mr Anwar's thread question resolvs the issue to a large extent.  All we need to do is go and check these glues on a piece of scrap foam piece.  Ok... now... I have used fevicol both regular and marine for normal form i.e. thermocol and also used industrial grade epoxy (generally sold in seperate bottles of Resin and hardner from about 300 gm to a Kg.  The most common one available with hardware stores is Lapox).  Lapox costs roughly Rs 300 for the 325 gm bottles of resin and hardner set i.e. nearly half of Araldite.  One needs to mix the two in equal quantities for the epoxy to set in 24 hrs (can use slightly more hardner to make it set in about 6 hrs).  Hot glue is also good and extremly user friendly (Check www.ebay.in for good glue gun and glue sticks which are at upto 50% cost of most sellers of RC equipment in India.  I use it and guess you all can also use it easily.
Other things are Fibre tape (one can buy the silver fibre tape used by Air Conditioner mechanics generally Split AC guys.... they use it for covering the cooling tube joints), normal masking tape (you may cover the foam with thin paper.... sticking it with a thinned layer of fevicol and allow it to dry).  Thereafter the normal masking tape - brown tape fixes very well on the covered sheet.

GO ahead and improvise whatever you have... Happy Flying...

White tube is Hardener and red tube is Resins excellent result just bonded in 5 min tried to separate the pieces but the foam broke not the bonded area.In Chennai we can get Resins and hardeners separate for 8 rupees

Don't get confuse am sure Fevitite Rapid is excellent for bonding foam

Araldite klear 5min epoxy glue rare to get my area but got used one same result as fevitite rapid

But Fevitite Rapid was available in Hardware store,Electronic shop and stationery shop

not sure if anyone mentioned this glue however ...for balsa to vegetable plastic bags  tried many glues dint work this one is the best  FEVICOL SR 998 suggested by seniors on the forum  :thumbsup: :thumbsup: once glued very difficult to separate in fact impossible.

Well..... I have always preferred the locally available fevicol over all other glue for blasa.  In face I used to use the glue after diluting it with a little of water to make it run.  This way it would so into the depth of the joint and the adjoining balsa grains.  Yes takes 4-6 hours to set.  So fix everything in the night before going to bed and next day afternoon when you are on the table it is bone dry.  Thereafter run the diluted glue again on the joint to double seal it.  allow it to dry and you have a perfect joint.  For places which take high abuse... and engine mounts..... use commercial epoxy. 
For emmergency repair of models use fevitite or other Cyno (superglue) and fibre and masking tape.  Never hurry through your construction.

After going through this thread, I noticed no one is using silicone sealant, the stuff they use to make aquariums. I have made a 3d background for my aquarium, out of desi thermocol and I used silicone to stick it all together. The stuff worked pretty well. Maybe applying too much will make the model a bit heavy, but so will hot glue.
My Sky Surfer is ready for assembly and I have pretty much purchased all the hardware and electricals. I have ordered Clear Foam Glue (Medium Cure) from Hobbyking but will have to wait until it arrives.

@Kewal, if you can upload the picture of it, then it shall be easy for the members. Many times hardware stores don't know them by exact name, but by packing its easy to know.

What about gluing Horns to EPO ?? which one is better . Yesterday I glued Horn to the wing of my Skysurfer using fevitite rapid epoxy and today in thr morning I checked the bonding by moving the servo arm. After two or three movements, the horn dislodged from the wing . Any sugestion regarding which glue to use.

I have a question and afaik, it hasn't been discussed, correct me if I wrong. I wanted to know which glue would be sanding friendly. Eg. if one was to laminate 10 sheets of depron and sand it into a particular shape (in my case, the Canopy of a jet). I was thinking of buying the Fevicryl Fabric glue. Any insights would be hellpful  :)

1. Polystyrene epoxy is not foam safe.

2. Epoxy is foam safe, but only mixed in the right quantities. if you mix the epoxy with the wrong amount of hardener then  while it is setting it will exotherm (give off heat) and melt the foam.

3. some like to thin the epoxy down with NC thinner. The acetone in the thinner will eat the foam. The epoxy is from Bangalore from one Mr. Bashir as also the Fiber Glass.

4. I have used epoxy to make fuselages (using the lost foam Method) and booms as well as covering foam core wings -
 I cut my own cores from green foam (40 Psi). cores covered with 48 gms glass fiber cloth - stiffened with Uni directional CF cloth 150 Gsm. The foam is from Vijay Traders Bangalore. The Carbon fiber unidirectional cloth and 6K and 12 K tow comes from Hindustan Fibers Mumbai.

5. I make my own CF rods using Carbon 12K tow.

The thing is awesome.
But I think you are reinforcing it too much.

it needs the reinforcement as the glider comes under enormous stress. The CF on the spar gives the rigidity and stops the flexing of the wings. The GF gives the torsional strength. DLGs leave the had at speeds of 140 Km/hr or more with the circular motion becoming a tangent on release. The battery pack wants to go one way while the tail in another direction. The heights these planes reach is anywhere between 120 - 180 feet with a hang time of over 4 minutes. In flight they are known to reach 160/km/hr. lets see how it flies. I will also try and install a rotary
drive system (trying to build one at home using a Parker refill coupled to the servo gear)

epoxy resin rate 850 Kg / hardener 100 ml 150 . Ratio of hardener to epoxy is 8 parts epoxy to 2 parts hardener. if a faster cure is needed then the rate of hardener can be increased up to 5 parts (giver 05 min epoxy). This is good for any foam except EPO (will not bond).
I also use a thickening agent called fumed silica which will gives a consistency of normal 10 min araldite.
